The correct fix depends on where it appeared and whether the full value includes a suffix such as 653.80 or 653.83. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager uses 653 for a Windows VSS snapshot limit, Microsoft Advertising API uses 653 for AuctionSegmentsExceeded, Veritas NetBackup lists an obsolete status 653, and Lexmark CS725 printers use 653.80–653.86 for isolation-motor faults. Record the application, device, complete code, and surrounding message before changing anything.
Start by identifying the source of 653
A number alone is not enough to select a repair. Do not apply a Windows registry fix, reinstall a printer part, or change a backup schedule until you know which product emitted the message. The same number can indicate a volume-count limit, an API request-limit error, an obsolete backup status, or a mechanical printer fault.

Capture the complete message
- Write down the product name and version, if shown.
- Copy the entire message, including punctuation, a decimal suffix, and any component name such as VSS,
bpccord, or isolation motor. - Note what was happening: a scheduled backup, an API call, a printer operation, or a Windows application launch.
- Record the time and affected files, job ID, campaign, printer, or computer. This information determines which logs are useful.
If the message came from a named application or device, use only that product’s branch below. If you cannot identify the source, treat 653 as an identification problem rather than a generic Windows corruption code.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager: fix the Windows VSS volume limit
IBM documents return code 653 when a snapshot operation reaches the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service limit. IBM’s wording is precise: “The maximum number of shadow copied volumes in a single shadow copy set is 64.” A backup schedule that attempts to include 64 or more volumes in one set can therefore fail. IBM’s documented scheduling remedy is to keep each portion at 63 or fewer filesystems.

1. Confirm that VSS is the failing component
- Open the Windows Event Viewer and inspect the Windows Logs > Application log around the failed backup time.
- Review the Tivoli Storage Manager activity log and the VSS traces collected for the same job.
- Look for a VSS volume-limit message rather than assuming every 653 is the same failure.
- Check for Event ID 25. IBM’s second note associates this event with shadow-copy storage that could not grow quickly enough.
2. Split the backup schedule
- List every filesystem or volume included in the affected schedule.
- Create separate schedule portions, with no portion containing more than 63 filesystems.
- Stagger the portions when practical so that several large snapshot operations do not compete for storage and I/O at the same moment.
- Run a controlled backup of each portion and verify that the corresponding VSS snapshot completes.
The limit applies to one shadow-copy set, not to the total number of volumes that can ever be protected. Splitting the work changes how snapshots are formed; it does not remove data from the backup plan.
3. Address shadow-copy storage pressure
- Reduce competing disk activity while the snapshot is created. Heavy writes can prevent shadow-copy storage from expanding in the available time.
- Choose a shadow-copy storage volume that is not itself being shadow-copied. Including the storage area in its own snapshot can create contention and an invalid design for the affected job.
- Investigate Event ID 25 together with the VSS traces instead of treating it as proof that the 64-volume limit was reached; it can indicate that storage growth, rather than volume count, was the immediate problem.
4. Bring VSS up to date
Apply the Microsoft VSS patches appropriate for the Windows edition and server in the Tivoli Storage Manager environment. Coordinate patching with the backup administrator, because a restart or a maintenance window may be required. Re-run one split schedule after patching and retain the before-and-after logs.
5. Consider the provider option only when the design allows it
IBM documents disabling the snapshotproviderfs vss option for the affected drive as a possible remedy. This changes the snapshot provider used by that drive, so it is not a safe blind switch. Confirm that the resulting backup method meets your recovery requirements and follow IBM’s configuration syntax for your Tivoli Storage Manager version. If the workload depends on VSS-consistent snapshots, ask the backup administrator to approve this change before applying it.

When the IBM branch still fails
Send the Tivoli Storage Manager activity log, VSS traces, Windows Application events, the Event ID 25 details (if present), the list of filesystems in each schedule, and the exact Windows and Tivoli versions to your backup support channel. Do not merge the schedules again merely to test whether the error disappears; that recreates the documented volume-count condition.
Microsoft Advertising API: resolve AuctionSegmentsExceeded
In Microsoft’s operation-error table, numeric code 653 is AuctionSegmentsExceeded. It means the request contains more AuctionSegmentSearchParameter entries than the operation permits. This is an API validation problem, not a Windows hardware or file-repair problem.
1. Inspect the serialized request
- Capture the request body generated by your client immediately before transmission, while removing credentials and other secrets from the copy you share.
- Count the
AuctionSegmentSearchParameterobjects actually sent. Generated filters can add entries that are not obvious in the calling code. - Check the operation’s current schema and API version. A client library may be serializing fields for a different version than the endpoint expects.
2. Reduce and regroup the parameters
- Remove redundant auction-segment conditions.
- Combine criteria only where the API schema explicitly permits it; do not replace a list with an invented field name.
- If the business query genuinely requires more segments than one request allows, divide it into several valid requests and combine the results in your application.
- Log each request’s segment count and response code so a later change does not silently recreate the limit.
3. Validate before retrying
Run the request against the documented API version and confirm that every parameter name, nesting level, and data type matches that version. Retry only after the count and schema are corrected. Repeating an unchanged request will continue to return 653 and can create unnecessary traffic or duplicate application work.

Veritas NetBackup: status 653 is obsolete
Veritas lists status 653 with the message “unable to send a message to bpccord” and states that this error code is no longer used. That status should not be handled like a current, generic Windows error.

What to do
- Record the NetBackup master server, media server, client, job ID, timestamp, and the complete console text.
- Collect the appropriate NetBackup logs from the systems involved in the failed job. Preserve the original timestamps and avoid editing files in place.
- Contact Veritas support and provide the logs and job context, noting that the console reported obsolete status 653.
Do not change Windows registry values, delete system files, or run a generic repair utility in an attempt to clear this status. Because Veritas marks the code obsolete, the support team must determine which current communication or job condition produced the message.
Lexmark CS725: diagnose 653.80–653.86 isolation-motor faults
On a Lexmark CS725, a decimal suffix is essential. Codes 653.80 through 653.86 describe isolation-motor behavior, including failure to turn on or off, incorrect ramp-up, a stall, incorrect speed, and incorrect timing. Lexmark’s exact description for 653.83 is “The motor (ISO) stalled.” These are model-specific service faults, not software errors that a Windows repair step can correct.

1. Reset and reproduce the fault
- Use the printer’s normal power or reset procedure and allow the device to complete initialization.
- Record the exact subcode if it returns. A range such as 653.80–653.86 is not specific enough for parts ordering.
- Run the printer’s isolation-motor diagnostic from the service menu, following the CS725 service documentation for entering and exiting diagnostics.
2. Inspect the mechanical path
Inspect the input rollers for binding. A roller or associated mechanism that cannot move freely can make a correctly commanded motor appear stalled or mistimed. Remove only material that the service instructions identify as safe to remove; do not force the rollers or reach into a powered mechanism.
3. Check the motor wiring and controller connection
- Power the printer down as specified by the service procedure before opening covers or disconnecting connectors.
- Inspect the isolation-motor cable for damage, looseness, or a connector that is not fully seated.
- Check the JMTR1 controller connector and reconnect it if the service documentation permits that action.
- Replace damaged cabling, then repeat the isolation-motor diagnostic.
4. Escalate to the isolation unit or controller board
If the rollers move freely, the cable is sound, and the JMTR1 connection is secure but the same subcode remains, Lexmark’s service flow proceeds to replacing the isolation unit or the controller board as indicated by the diagnostic result. These parts and procedures are model-specific. Use a qualified printer technician if you are not trained to service the CS725, and retain the failed subcode for the service record.
If 653 appears in an unidentified Windows dialog
No authoritative source defines one universal Windows Error Code 653. A dialog without a product name may come from an application, a service, a driver package, or a task that runs in the background. The safest manual process is to identify its owner before altering system components.
Trace the emitter
- Take a screenshot or copy the dialog text, including the window title and any file name.
- Note whether it appears at startup, when opening a particular application, after connecting a device, or during a scheduled task.
- Check the Windows Application event log at the same timestamp and look for an application name, source, event ID, or executable path.
- Use that name to locate the product’s own support instructions. A named backup, advertising client, printer, or security product should be handled by its corresponding branch or vendor.
Protect data before any repair
Back up important files before changing Windows system elements. The generic scan-and-repair workflow associated with this code warns that manipulating system elements can leave Windows unbootable. Keep a recovery method available and prefer the named product’s documented repair procedure over deleting files or editing the registry by guesswork.
What not to assume
- 653 does not by itself prove malware, damaged Windows files, a bad driver, or a failing disk.
- A decimal suffix may identify a completely different product or component.
- Clearing a temporary folder, reinstalling an unrelated application, or changing a registry value cannot be presented as a universal fix because no cross-product definition exists.
If the dialog cannot be attributed after checking the event log, preserve the screenshot, event entries, application list, Windows edition, and time of occurrence and ask the computer or software vendor for analysis. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly dismissing the dialog or applying unrelated repairs.

Prevent another 653 incident
- Keep the complete code, including decimal suffixes, in incident notes and monitoring alerts.
- For Tivoli Storage Manager, review filesystem counts whenever a backup schedule changes and keep each VSS set within the documented limit.
- Monitor VSS storage growth and retain Application event logs long enough to correlate Event ID 25 with failed jobs.
- For API integrations, validate generated request counts and pin the client to a supported API schema.
- For NetBackup, keep the job and communication logs required by your support procedure instead of deleting them after a failed run.
- For the CS725, record subcodes and diagnostic results before replacing a cable, isolation unit, or controller board.
- Maintain current backups before changing system files, backup settings, or printer hardware.
