“Error Deleting ICM Xform” is Windows Win32 error 2019, ERROR_DELETING_ICM_XFORM. It indicates that an application failed while cleaning up an Image Color Management color-space transform. It is not the name of a file you should delete, and the message alone does not prove that your graphics driver, monitor, or color profile is defective. The reliable fix starts by identifying the application that emitted it; if you maintain that application, inspect its DeleteColorSpace call and color-space handle ownership.
What “Error Deleting ICM Xform” means
The message is the text associated with Win32 error constant ERROR_DELETING_ICM_XFORM, numeric code 2019. A Mono Win32 error-message table maps code 2019 to “Deleting ICM xform.” “ICM” means Windows Image Color Management, and an “xform” is a color-space transform used while converting or handling colors in the graphics pipeline.

This is a resource-lifecycle error. An application created or obtained a color-space object, used it through the Windows GDI graphics subsystem, and then failed when trying to destroy that object. The wording does not identify a physical component, a missing .xform file, or a user document that should be removed manually.

Microsoft’s DeleteColorSpace documentation describes the function as removing and destroying a specified color space. The function accepts an HCOLORSPACE handle and returns a Boolean result: TRUE for success and FALSE for failure. The desktop Win32 declaration is in wingdi.h; the implementation is supplied by Gdi32.dll, with Gdi32.lib used for linking.

The related CreateColorSpace API returns a color-space handle. The GDI reference says that, when the color space is no longer needed, the caller should use DeleteColorSpace to delete it. That create/use/delete relationship is why ownership and cleanup order matter more than a generic “repair Windows” action.
Microsoft’s page lists Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server as the minimum supported client and server for this API documentation. The page was updated on February 22, 2024. Those minimums describe API support, not a promise that every modern application will handle color resources correctly.
Is error 2019 dangerous?
The text itself is not evidence of malware or a failing monitor. It reports an unsuccessful color-space cleanup operation. Depending on the application, you may see a dialog, a crash, a rendering problem, or only an entry in a log. The message does not mean that Windows is asking you to delete a file named “ICM Xform.”

A graphics driver or an installed color profile can be part of the circumstances in which an application reaches this code, but the error number alone cannot distinguish a driver issue from an application bug. No general registry edit, driver replacement, or physical hardware purchase is justified without knowing which program made the failing call.
What to do as an end user
When you do not own the source code, your goal is to capture enough context for the application vendor to reproduce and correct the lifecycle failure. Follow these steps in order.
- Identify the emitting program. Write down the application or service that displayed the message or logged it. Note whether it appeared during launch, opening or saving an image, printing, changing displays, switching HDR or color settings, closing the program, or another specific action.
- Record the environment. Capture the Windows edition and build, the application version, graphics-driver version, connected displays, and the active color-profile setup. If the program is using a special monitor profile, printer profile, HDR mode, or color-management option, record that as well rather than changing several settings at once.
- Reproduce the failure deliberately. Repeat the same action and note whether the message appears every time, only after a particular sequence, or only when the application closes. A reliable sequence is more useful to a vendor than a screenshot without context.
- Check the application’s own update and color-management controls. Install an update supplied by the application vendor if one is available. If the program has a documented option to disable or reset its color-management feature, test that option one change at a time and record the result. Do not remove registry entries or delete profile files merely because the message contains the word “deleting.”
- Separate the application from the display setup. If practical, repeat the same operation with the same application but a different display or a standard profile, documenting exactly what changed. This is an isolation test, not proof that the original profile is defective. Restore your normal setup after the test unless the vendor instructs otherwise.
- Send a complete report to the vendor. Include the exact message, error number 2019, application and version, Windows build, graphics-driver version, color-profile details, the action that triggers it, whether it happens on every attempt, and any log or crash record the application provides.
If the application is unusable after the error, save your work, restart it, and avoid repeatedly forcing the same operation until you have captured the sequence. Reinstalling Windows or replacing hardware is not a reasoned first response to this particular message.

How a developer should diagnose the failure
If you maintain the application, instrument the color-space lifecycle around the failing cleanup call. The objective is to determine whether the handle is valid, owned by the current code path, and being deleted exactly once.
- Log the handle at creation. When
CreateColorSpacereturns anHCOLORSPACE, record the handle value, the code path that created it, the associated profile or color-space data, and the owning object or thread. - Log every selection and handoff. Record when the color space is selected for a device context or passed to another component. A handle that has been transferred must have one clearly defined owner responsible for final cleanup.
- Instrument
DeleteColorSpace. Record the handle supplied to the function and its Boolean return value. AFALSEreturn is the immediate failure signal; preserve the surrounding sequence so that the failing path can be compared with a successful one. - Check ownership. Confirm that the caller deleting the handle is the component that owns it under your application’s design. Do not delete a handle borrowed from another object unless that object explicitly transfers ownership.
- Check for double cleanup. Trace shutdown, exception, cancellation, and device-change paths separately. A normal close path may delete the same handle again after an error path has already released it.
- Check ordering. Ensure that dependent graphics objects are no longer using the color space before deletion, and that cleanup is not racing with rendering or profile changes. The correct order is application-specific, so preserve the sequence in your trace rather than assuming a universal workaround.
- Compare successful and failing runs. Test the smallest reproducible action, then add profile changes, display changes, and shutdown steps individually. The first difference in handle ownership, return value, or cleanup order is more actionable than a broad driver swap.
The documented contract gives you two concrete checks: CreateColorSpace supplies a handle, and DeleteColorSpace must be called when that color space is no longer needed and reports success through its Boolean return. The API documentation does not prescribe one universal application fix; your trace must establish which lifecycle rule the failing path violates.
How to judge proposed fixes
| Proposed approach | When it is justified | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fix the application’s color-space ownership or cleanup order | The failure is reproducible in one program and tracing shows an invalid, borrowed, or repeatedly deleted handle | Creation, selection, ownership transfer, one-time deletion, and the FALSE return are all logged |
| Update the application | The vendor has released a build that addresses the reproducible sequence | Retest the original steps on the same Windows build and profile setup |
| Change a color profile or display mode | A controlled comparison shows the failure only with one profile or mode | Keep the change documented and confirm whether the application vendor identifies it as a workaround |
| Replace or roll back a graphics driver | There is separate evidence of a driver-specific regression affecting the same application and configuration | Use the driver vendor’s supported package and verify the original reproduction steps |
| Edit the registry or delete system files | Only when the application or Microsoft documentation gives an exact, applicable procedure | Back up first and confirm that the edit addresses the color-space lifecycle rather than merely hiding the message |
Generic “registry cleaners,” unverified profile deletions, and unrelated hardware purchases do not explain why one HCOLORSPACE cleanup returned failure. Prefer a fix that identifies the emitting application, reproduces the problem, observes the API return value, verifies handle ownership, and is supported for the affected Windows build.

Error 2019, “Deleting ICM xform,” is a GDI/Image Color Management cleanup failure. Treat it as an application resource-lifecycle problem until evidence shows otherwise. End users should identify and document the emitting program and report a reproducible sequence. Developers should trace CreateColorSpace, handle ownership, selection and release order, and the Boolean result from DeleteColorSpace before attempting broader Windows or hardware changes.
