In plain language, another process is using the file through a memory mapping, so Windows may refuse to overwrite, truncate, rename, or delete it. The documented message is: “The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.”
This is usually a file-ownership conflict, not a generic permissions error. Close the program that opened the file, confirm that its process has really exited, and then retry. If you do not know which process owns the mapping, search for the filename with Microsoft Process Explorer and stop or restart the responsible process only after checking what service or application it belongs to.

What ERROR_USER_MAPPED_FILE 1224 means
Windows can expose a file to a process through a memory-mapped section. Instead of repeatedly reading and writing with ordinary file calls, the process works with a region of memory that corresponds to the file. The mapping remains a live reference until the process closes it and releases the section.

While that section is open, another operation may be unsafe. Windows can therefore reject an attempt to replace the file contents, shorten it, rename it, or remove it. The error text describes the condition precisely: a user-mapped section is still open for that file.

The process holding the mapping might be the application you were using, a worker launched by it, a database engine, a synchronization client, a repository tool, or another background service. File Explorer may show no obvious open window because the handle belongs to a background process rather than an interactive program.
What the error is not
- It is not, by itself, proof that your account lacks permission.
- It is not a representative measure of how common a Windows problem is; no reliable prevalence statistic is established.
- It does not identify malware or require an antivirus conclusion. The immediate issue is that a mapped section is open.
When Windows shows this error
The operation that fails provides a useful clue. Record the exact filename and what you were trying to do before changing anything.
| Failed operation | What it suggests | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Save or overwrite | The old file is still mapped by an editor, game tool, database process, or worker. | Close the application and wait for its process to disappear from Task Manager. |
| Truncate or replace | A writer is trying to change the file length while another process still has a mapped view. | Identify the mapping owner before forcing a replacement. |
| Rename or delete | A background reader or service still depends on the existing file. | Search for the filename in Process Explorer. |
| Database initialization | A previous process may still be dismantling a database or SQLite shared-memory mapping. | Allow complete process exit before starting the replacement process. |
For a game-related file, the visible game may have closed while a launcher, mod manager, crash reporter, save synchronizer, or helper process remains active. Treat those as possibilities to check, not as proof that a particular program is responsible.
Fix ERROR_USER_MAPPED_FILE step by step
1. Capture the filename and operation
- Copy the complete path and filename from the error dialog, log, installer, launcher, or command that failed.
- Write down whether the operation was a save, overwrite, truncate, rename, delete, or database startup.
- Note the application, service, build job, game launcher, or utility that initiated the operation.
- Do not immediately delete or replace the file. Knowing exactly which path is affected makes the owner search reliable and helps distinguish a mapping conflict from a path, disk, ACL, or security-software problem.
2. Close the most likely application normally
Exit the program that recently opened the file. For a document, close the editor. For a database, stop the database client or worker. For generated assets, stop the build or conversion process. For a game file, close the game and then close any launcher or management utility that may still be processing its files.
Use the program’s normal Exit or Quit command first. A normal shutdown gives the process an opportunity to unmap the file cleanly. Then open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Processes or Details view, and confirm that the application and its relevant worker processes have disappeared. A window closing is not the same as the process finishing.

Retry only after the process is gone. If the operation succeeds, the closed application owned the mapping. If the error returns, continue rather than repeatedly attempting the same write while the owner is still active.
3. Find the owner with Process Explorer
When the owner is unknown, Process Explorer can search open handles by filename. The researched troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends this approach for a mapped-file conflict.

- Start Process Explorer with an account that can inspect the processes involved.
- Open its handle-search command (the interface is labeled Find Handle or DLL in current distributions).
- Enter the filename, preferably the distinctive final portion of the path, and run the search.
- Review each result’s process name, process ID, and path. Check whether it is your application, a child worker, a repository reader, a sync process, or a service.
- Select the result and inspect the process before taking action. Do not terminate a service merely because its name is unfamiliar.
- If the process is clearly responsible and it is safe to interrupt, close it normally or use the service’s own stop/restart procedure. Then search again to verify that the handle or mapping is gone.
Stopping a process can interrupt work, discard unsaved changes, or affect other users of a service. Save what you can, record the process name, and use a controlled restart when the process is part of a server or shared system. The goal is to release the mapping, not to close unrelated programs.
4. Wait for a complete shutdown before relaunching
A rapid stop-and-start can reproduce error 1224. In one documented Windows case, a replacement process attempted to use an SQLite file while the old process was still tearing down its shared-memory mapping. The relevant fix was to wait for the old process to finish exiting before launching its replacement.
An approximately 20-second wait was observed in that case. It is not a universal Windows requirement: the correct interval depends on how the application shuts down and what background work it performs. Watch Task Manager or Process Explorer and relaunch only after the old process has actually disappeared. If a service automatically restarts, stop the service or disable automatic restart briefly while you complete the file operation, then restore its normal setting.

5. Check background repository and web-server readers
Not every mapping belongs to the program that reports the error. Background readers can open the same files independently.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →One reported failure involved a background repository command, git diff --numstat --find-renames, reading tracked files while another operation attempted to write them. Stopping those readers cleared the immediate write failure in that report. If a source-control integration, indexer, or status worker is repeatedly touching the path, pause it, allow its process to exit, and retry.
A separate Jetty/Ignition case described a worker that retained mapped files for the worker’s lifetime. In that kind of application, the practical choices are application-specific: recycle the worker after checking its role, move the file outside the worker’s mapped set, or use a database-backed design instead of repeatedly replacing a live mapped file. These are design or deployment options, not universal Windows commands.
6. Retry the original operation once the mapping is gone
- Return to the application or command that failed.
- Perform the same operation against the same path.
- If it works, record which process had held the mapping and whether it is likely to recur.
- If it fails again, repeat the Process Explorer search immediately. A different worker may have reopened the file as soon as the first one stopped.
Do not assume that a successful rename or delete proves the underlying application is fixed. A service that recreates the mapping can cause the same error on the next save or update.
Use a temporary file when the content can be generated separately
For generated documents, assets, exports, or other replaceable output, write the new content to a different temporary filename first. Close the temporary file, verify that the writer has released it, and then replace the destination after the original mapping has disappeared.

- Create a temporary name in the same destination directory when the application allows it.
- Write the complete new content to that temporary file.
- Flush and close the writer so your own process is not holding the temporary file.
- Confirm that the original destination is no longer mapped.
- Rename or replace the destination with the temporary file.
This pattern separates content generation from the final replacement, but it does not override a live mapping on the destination. If another process still has the destination mapped, the final rename or replacement can fail with the same error. Resolve the owner first, then perform the replacement.
Choose the least disruptive fix
The best remedy depends on what you can identify and what the file represents.
| Situation | Preferred approach | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| You know the application that opened the file | Exit it normally, verify process exit, then retry. | Unsaved work can be lost if you force termination. |
| The owner is unknown | Search the filename in Process Explorer and inspect the owning process. | Stopping the wrong process can interrupt unrelated work. |
| A service or shared worker owns the mapping | Use the service’s controlled stop/restart or recycle procedure. | Other users or jobs may be interrupted. |
| The conflict follows every generated-file update | Generate to a temporary file and replace only after the mapping is released. | The final replacement still fails if the destination remains mapped. |
| A database or SQLite shared-memory file is involved | Wait for complete old-process exit before relaunching; then retry. | A fixed delay, such as the approximately 20 seconds observed in one case, is not universal. |
| A background reader repeatedly reopens the file | Pause or recycle that reader, or redesign the workflow around a database or separate file. | Disabling the reader may affect indexing, synchronization, or service behavior. |
What to do if the error keeps returning
Confirm that the same path is involved
Applications sometimes report a directory-level operation while the mapped file is a child file with a similar name. Copy the exact path from the latest failure and search for that filename, not a remembered earlier path.
Look for a process that comes back
Search immediately after the failure, stop the identified process, and search again. If the handle reappears, an automatic worker, service, sync client, or repository task is reopening the file. Use its own pause, stop, or restart controls instead of repeatedly killing short-lived child processes.

Separate a mapping error from another failure
If Process Explorer finds no process mapping the target file, reassess the operation and path. An access-control error, invalid path, full disk, file-system problem, or security product may produce a different message. Error 1224 specifically concerns an open user-mapped section; do not treat every failed overwrite as the same condition.

Plan a controlled maintenance window
When the file belongs to a server worker or shared service, schedule the stop or recycle so users and jobs are not surprised. Record the process name, the affected path, the operation that failed, and whether a temporary-file workflow was used. That record helps distinguish a one-time shutdown race from a recurring reader that needs configuration or architectural changes.
Why restarting Windows can appear to fix it
A full restart ends the process that owns the mapping and clears its mapped section, so the next operation often succeeds. That does not identify the original owner or prevent the same background program from reopening the file later. Use a restart as a recovery option when you cannot safely identify the process, but use Process Explorer and controlled process shutdown to diagnose a recurrence.
Frequently misunderstood points
“File Explorer shows no lock. Why is the file still blocked?”
File Explorer displays files and folders, not every handle held by every background process. A worker, service, database engine, or repository reader can keep a mapped section open without an Explorer window. Search by filename in Process Explorer to see which process is involved.
“Can I just delete the file?”
Deletion is one of the operations that can be rejected while a user-mapped section is open. Deleting or renaming through another utility does not remove the underlying conflict; release the mapping first.
“Is the file corrupted?”
Error 1224 alone does not establish corruption. It reports a sharing conflict involving a mapped section. After the owner releases the file, check the application’s own validation or recovery tools if it still reports data problems.
“Is the approximately 20-second delay required?”
No. That interval was observed in one SQLite restart case. The reliable test is whether the old process has fully exited and released its mapping. On another system, shutdown may take less or more time.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Record the exact path and failed operation.
- Close the application that most likely opened the file.
- Verify in Task Manager that the process and its workers have exited.
- Search the filename with Process Explorer if the owner is unknown.
- Inspect the owning process before stopping it.
- For services, workers, and databases, use a controlled stop or recycle.
- Wait for complete process exit before relaunching.
- Check for repository, synchronization, or other background readers.
- For generated output, write a temporary file and replace the destination only after its mapping is released.
- Retry once, then search again if the error returns.
