The fastest way to fix “Failed to create DirectX device” is to check the graphics device in Device Manager, update or reinstall its driver, and then restart Windows. Do not begin by downloading a random “latest DirectX” installer: on Windows 10 and Windows 11, the DirectX version supported by the installation is supplied through Windows Update. The error can indicate a driver problem, disabled hardware, outdated firmware, or a graphics-device failure—not simply a missing DirectX installation.
1. Check the graphics-device error code first
Before changing DirectX files, find out whether Windows itself has reported a problem with the GPU.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Look for a graphics device with a yellow exclamation point.
- Double-click it and read the Device status box.
Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions and error-code meanings are documented in its Windows error-code reference.
| Code | What it means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 43 | Windows stopped the device because it reported problems. | Update or reinstall the graphics driver. The cause may be driver software or hardware. |
| 10 | The device cannot start. | Open Properties → Driver → Update Driver. |
| 28 | The driver is not installed. | Uninstall the device, then use Action → Scan for hardware changes. |
| 31 | Windows cannot load the required driver. | Update the driver. |
| 37 | Windows cannot initialize the device driver. | Uninstall the device and scan for hardware changes. |
| 39 | The driver may be corrupted or missing. | Uninstall the device and scan for hardware changes. |
| 22 | The device is disabled. | Choose Action → Enable Device. |
| 29 | Firmware did not provide the resources the device needs. | Enable the device in BIOS/UEFI using the computer maker’s instructions. |
| 35 | System firmware lacks enough information to configure the device. | Check the computer manufacturer for a BIOS or firmware update. |
| 38 | A previous driver instance is still in memory. | Restart the computer. |
| 42 | A duplicate device is already running. | Restart the computer. |
| 45 | The hardware is not currently connected. | Reconnect the device; no separate repair is required for the code itself. |
If Device Manager reports no error, continue with the diagnostic and driver steps below.

2. Update the graphics driver
Windows Update can install drivers for many devices, including video cards, but a completed Windows Update run does not prove that the graphics manufacturer’s current driver is installed.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver, then Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If Windows installs a driver, select Close and restart the PC.
If Windows finds nothing, download the driver from the graphics-device manufacturer or your computer manufacturer and follow its installation instructions. Use the exact model of the GPU or PC rather than a generic driver from an unofficial download site.
3. Roll back a driver that caused the problem
If the DirectX-device failure started immediately after a driver update, the new driver may be responsible.

4. Reinstall the graphics device
A damaged or incorrectly loaded driver can sometimes be repaired by removing the device entry and letting Windows detect it again.
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Uninstall, then confirm with OK.
- Right-click the computer name at the top of the Device Manager list.
- Select Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the PC, then install the manufacturer’s driver if Windows does not restore a working one.
For Code 43, Microsoft specifically lists driver reinstallation as a remedy, while also warning that the underlying cause can be hardware-related.

5. Check DirectX with DxDiag
dxdiag is Windows’ built-in DirectX Diagnostic Tool. It can confirm the DirectX version and provide graphics-driver details, but the version number alone is not a complete compatibility test.
- Type
dxdiaginto Windows Search. - Select dxdiag to open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, read DirectX Version under System Information.
- If prompted to check digitally signed drivers, Microsoft recommends selecting Yes.
- For troubleshooting, select Save All Information… and save the report.
Microsoft’s instructions for checking DirectX are available in its DirectX version guide.
A PC may show DirectX 12 in DxDiag and still fail to run a game’s required rendering path. The game also depends on the graphics hardware, its driver, and the specific Direct3D features it supports.

6. Install Windows updates—but not a fake DirectX upgrade
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft says DirectX updates are delivered through Windows Update. There is no separate “latest DirectX” installer that upgrades DirectX 12 on those systems. Install available Windows updates, restart, and test the game again.
Microsoft lists DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 as included with Windows 10 and states that there is no stand-alone package for those versions. Avoid third-party DirectX download sites that promise to replace or upgrade the system DirectX version.

7. Know when the legacy DirectX runtime is relevant
The DirectX End-User Runtime is not a general repair tool for a broken Direct3D 11 or Direct3D 12 installation. It does not change the DirectX version and does not replace Direct3D 9, 10.x, 11.x, DirectInput, DirectSound, DirectPlay, DirectShow, or DirectMusic.

It is intended for older applications that need legacy side-by-side files such as d3dx9_35.dll. If an older game specifically reports a missing legacy DLL, use Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance. Installing it will not make unsupported graphics hardware support a newer rendering feature.
8. If the error remains
When only one game fails
Check that game’s own graphics requirements and launcher files. A DirectX version reported by DxDiag does not guarantee that the GPU supports every feature the game requests. If the graphics device has no Device Manager error, the failure may be specific to the game’s required rendering path, its configuration, or its files.
When several games fail
Prioritize the graphics driver and Device Manager. Update or reinstall the driver, check for Code 43 or another device status code, and restart after each repair. If the same device continues to report Code 43, Microsoft’s guidance allows for a hardware fault as well as a driver fault; a DirectX reinstall is unlikely to repair defective hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the graphics device is missing
Check Device Manager for disabled or undetected hardware. Code 22 points to Action → Enable Device. Code 29 points to BIOS/UEFI configuration. Code 45 means Windows currently sees the hardware as disconnected, so reconnecting it is the appropriate first action.
When the problem began after upgrading or changing hardware
Install the correct driver for the precise GPU and Windows edition from the manufacturer. For firmware-related Code 35 or Code 29, use the computer manufacturer’s BIOS/UEFI documentation rather than changing firmware settings at random.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It continues to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it after that date. If the PC supports it, Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This does not mean every DirectX-device error requires an operating-system upgrade, but an unsupported Windows installation limits the normal update path for drivers and system components.
Quick Recap
Recommended repair order
- Read the GPU’s Device status and note any error code.
- Update the graphics driver through Device Manager.
- If the issue began after an update, roll the driver back.
- Uninstall the graphics device, scan for hardware changes, and restart.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver.
- Run
dxdiagand save its report if the problem continues. - Use the legacy DirectX runtime only for an older game that explicitly needs missing legacy files.
- Treat persistent Code 43 or multiple-game failures as possible hardware or firmware problems, not proof that DirectX itself is missing.
