“Failed to download file” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The right fix depends on which file failed and whether the problem is in Minecraft Launcher, a game version, Java runtime selection, Forge, or a modpack launcher. Start by recording the full error—including the file name or URL and any error code—then follow the branch that matches it.
First, identify what failed
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, open the error details and note the exact wording, file name or URL, and any error code or network/runtime detail. Also record which launcher and Minecraft or Forge version you were using. The same short message appears in different situations, so a fix for one does not necessarily apply to another.

- Official Minecraft Launcher: the Launcher itself may be unable to install or update a game version.
- Game-version file or asset: the failed download may be tied to a particular Minecraft version.
- Java runtime: the detail may say the Launcher could not select a valid Java runtime.
- Forge or modpack: the failure may occur while installing Forge or launching a Forge profile through another launcher.
If the error names Java runtime selection
If you see wording such as “Couldn’t select a valid version of the Java runtime to download,” check the Java executable configured for the profile that failed. In a community discussion about Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge 14.23.5.2860, a reply recommends checking the profile’s Java directory and suggests either the runtime shipped with vanilla Minecraft or a Java 8 JDK: Forge forum discussion. That advice is specific to an older setup, not a universal requirement.
Confirm the Java requirements for your exact Minecraft and Forge versions before changing the executable. Do not install a particular Java version solely because an old forum post recommends it.

If Forge installation fails
A Forge installer failure is different from a Launcher error selecting a Java runtime. A Forge support thread recommends rerunning the installer, checking that the Forge build matches what the modpack requires, and collecting logs: Forge support thread. These are community instructions from 2018; verify that they fit your current version and installation method.
Find logs to share
The thread identifies .minecraft/logs/debug.log as the debug log location for the Mojang Launcher. If logs are not appearing where expected, it suggests looking for launcher_log.txt. Log locations and availability can vary by launcher, so include the launcher name and version when asking for help.

If the official Minecraft Launcher cannot install a game version
Use Minecraft’s official download page to select the platform-specific Launcher download and reach the linked installation and troubleshooting support. The available evidence does not establish one official fix for every “Failed to download file” message, so use the exact file or URL in the error to describe the problem when consulting support.
If you use a third-party modpack launcher
Note the launcher name and whether the error occurs while downloading the pack, installing a Minecraft version, installing Forge, or starting the profile. These are distinct failure points. A Forge installer recommendation may not apply to a modpack launcher, and a Java-profile setting will not explain every failed file download.

What not to do without a matching diagnosis
- Do not delete the entire
.minecraftfolder as a first step. No source reviewed establishes that as a necessary general fix. - Do not disable security protection or manually download a file from an unverified source based only on the short error text.
- Do not assume reinstalling the Launcher or Windows will resolve the issue. A user report describes the message alongside a later Java-runtime error after attempted reinstalls, but it does not establish a cause or verified fix: Microsoft Q&A report.
If you eventually consider removing or replacing files, preserve your worlds and other user data first. The error details and logs are more useful than a broad reset when the cause is still unknown.
