Windows 8 error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect,” but the code is not a diagnosis by itself. In Windows Update, it is associated with corrupted downloads, damaged system files, permission problems, or an incorrect configuration. The safest repair order is to back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the update cache, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, check the disk when symptoms point to storage errors, and verify Windows 8.1 prerequisites before a manual update.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft uses 0x80070057 for a parameter that Windows considers invalid or inconsistent. The same code can appear during Windows Update, a Windows upgrade, backup or restore, and other operations. Consequently, there is no single universal fix. The operation that failed determines which repair is most relevant.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For a failed update, Microsoft groups the code with installation problems caused by corrupted files, permission issues, or incorrect system settings. The code alone does not establish that the computer has a virus, that a particular component is defective, or that the update itself is permanently unavailable. Treat it as a sign to identify the failed operation and repair the underlying condition.

Identify where the failure occurred

Where you saw 0x80070057 Most useful first checks Why this path fits
Windows Update downloading or installing an update Back up files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset the update cache A damaged cached download or an update-service problem can make an otherwise valid package fail
Windows 8 or 8.1 upgrade Run the troubleshooter and system-file repairs, then retry the upgrade; check disk symptoms before retrying The installer can encounter damaged component files or storage errors while preparing the upgrade
Backup or restore Record the exact operation and destination, back up personal files separately, and repair system files before trying again The parameter may be invalid for that backup or restore job rather than for Windows Update
Another application or setup program Use the application’s own repair guidance after completing the general file and disk checks Windows assigns the same code to different operations, so an update-cache reset may not address an unrelated program

Back up your files before changing Windows

Microsoft’s first instruction is to back up personal files before trying the repairs. Copy documents, photos, saved games, and other irreplaceable data to a USB flash drive for Windows backup or to OneDrive. Confirm that the copies open from the backup location before continuing. A cache reset normally targets Windows Update files, but DISM, SFC, and disk repairs change system state; a current backup gives you a recovery option if the computer loses power or a pre-existing disk problem becomes worse.

Recovery, Repair & Re-install disc compatible with Win 8 32/64 bit
  • 🗝 [Requirement] You must have your Product key. Locate it on a sticker attached to your system. No Key included with item. You must change your bios to boot from the DVD. You must ensure that you have a DVD drive to boot this disc. This disc will not work in a CD drive.
  • 💻 [All in One] Repair, Recovery, and Install. For All Versions of 32 & 64Bit, Desktop and Laptop computers. Verify this is the item needed for the operating system that you have installed on your system.
  • 📁 [For All PC Brands] In order for this item to work properly, you much change the BIOS boot order. You will set the CD/DVD drive as first boot device and hard drive as second, then save the changed when complete. This is required. Instruction are included.
  • 💿 [Easy to use] (1). Insert the disc (2). Boot the PC (3). Set the bios to boot disc first (4). Boot from the DVD and repair/install/recover. You must change your boot order to have your computer load from the DVD. Once changed, restart the PC and the DVD will load.
  • 🚩 [Who needs] If your system is having trouble booting up, use this disc to repair the system. If the disc is not loading up, ensure that you have your bios set correctly and that the DVD drive is the first boot device. Without making this change, it will appear as if the disc is not functioning.
  • Keep the computer connected to reliable power during scans and repairs.
  • Write down whether the machine is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1; prerequisite requirements differ.
  • Record the update number or operation name shown with the error so you can retry the same task later.

Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Use the built-in troubleshooter before deleting update files. On Windows 8, open Control Panel, choose Troubleshooting, select Fix problems with Windows Update, and follow the prompts. The wording can vary slightly by edition, so use the Control Panel search box for “troubleshooting” if the tile is not visible.

  1. Close programs that are editing files or installing software.
  2. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter with an administrator account when Windows requests permission.
  3. Allow it to complete its checks and apply the repairs it offers.
  4. Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter says that no changes were made.
  5. Open Windows Update and retry the same update.

If the retry produces 0x80070057 again, continue with the cache reset rather than repeatedly pressing Retry. Repeated attempts can leave additional incomplete downloads in the cache.

Step 2: Reset the Windows Update cache

Windows stores downloaded update files in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. A corrupt download can make extraction or installation fail with 0x80070057. Microsoft documents stopping Windows Update, clearing the contents of this folder (or just its Download subfolder for a narrower reset), starting the service again, restarting Windows, and trying the update again.

Use an elevated Command Prompt to stop the service

  1. Press the Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter this command and wait for confirmation that the Windows Update service has stopped:
net stop wuauserv

Leave the administrator window open. If Windows says the service is not started, note that message and continue to the folder step. If access is denied, close the window, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and try again.

Clear the cached files

  1. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  2. Delete the contents inside the folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  3. If you want the narrower reset, open the Download subfolder and delete only its contents.
  4. Skip any file Windows reports as currently in use rather than forcing a deletion.

Deleting these files removes cached update downloads, not your personal documents. Windows can create a fresh cache when the service runs again.

Start Windows Update and retry

  1. Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run:
net start wuauserv
  1. Close the window and restart the computer.
  2. After signing in, open Windows Update and retry the failed update.

If the service will not start, restart once more and check the Windows Update entry in Control Panel. A persistent service error is a reason to complete the DISM and SFC repairs before attempting another installation.

Recovery, Repair & Re-install disc compatible with Win 8.1 32/64 bit
  • 🗝 [Requirement] You must have your Product key. Locate it on a sticker attached to your system. No Key included with item. You must change your bios to boot from the DVD. This will not work in a CD drive, you must have a DVD drive.
  • 💻 [All in One] Repair, Recovery, Install. For All Versions of 32 & 64Bit, Desktop and Laptop computers.
  • 📁 [For All PC Brands] Have available for a friend with another PC brand, be the hero. You must change the boot order to ensure that the disc loads. If you don't change the boot order, the system will try to load the hard drive which may not be working. Change the boot order to the CD/DVD drive as the "1st boot device". Change hard drive to "2nd boot device" then save the bios and restart the computer with disc in. At this point, the disc should load when you insert it into the computer.
  • 🚩 [Who needs] If your system is corrupted or have viruses/malware use the repair feature: If BOOTMGR is missing, NTLDR is missing, or Blue Screens of Death (BSOD). Use the install feature If the hard drive has failed. Use the recovery feature to restore back to a previous recovered version.

Step 3: Repair the Windows component store and system files

When the update cache is not the problem, Windows’ component store or protected system files may be damaged. Microsoft’s prescribed order is DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the component image that SFC uses as a source; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again: press the Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run DISM exactly as shown:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window or shut down the computer because progress can pause for a substantial period.

  1. When DISM has completed, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows.
  2. Retry Windows Update or the operation that originally produced 0x80070057.

Run both commands from the same elevated window and in that order. If either command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message; repeating the update without addressing an incomplete repair is unlikely to help.

Step 4: Check the disk when storage corruption is plausible

Use a disk check when you see read errors, files that suddenly become inaccessible, repeated repair failures, or other signs of file-system corruption. Microsoft documents chkdsk /f C: from an administrator Command Prompt. The /f switch asks Windows to fix file-system errors on the system drive.

  1. Back up important files first.
  2. Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
  3. Enter:
chkdsk /f C:
  1. If Windows reports that the drive is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y and press Enter.
  2. Restart the computer and let the check finish before signing in.
  3. After Windows starts, retry the failed update or operation.

A disk check can take time, particularly on a large or heavily used drive. Do not interrupt it by holding the power button. If the check repeatedly reports errors, treat that as a storage-reliability warning and preserve your backup before doing more installation attempts.

Step 5: Test for security-software interference carefully

Microsoft Learn lists antivirus and other security applications as a possible factor in update-extraction failures. Some security products inspect files as Windows extracts them and can block a temporary operation. Do not remove protection casually.

  1. Identify the security product and read its vendor’s instructions for temporary troubleshooting or maintenance mode.
  2. Only disable the specific protection the vendor says to test, and do so for the shortest practical time.
  3. Retry the update once while following the vendor’s procedure.
  4. Restore protection immediately after the test, whether the update succeeds or fails.

If the update works only while protection is temporarily paused, contact the security vendor for a supported exception or update rather than leaving the computer unprotected. If there is no change, re-enable protection and continue with the other repair paths.

Step 6: Verify Windows 8.1 prerequisites before a manual install

Manual packages for Windows 8.1 can require prerequisite updates. Microsoft Learn identifies KB2919355 and servicing update KB2919442 as prerequisites for some Windows 8.1 updates; a particular package can require additional prerequisites as well. These requirements do not automatically apply to every Windows 8 update.

  1. Confirm that the computer is running Windows 8.1, not the original Windows 8 edition.
  2. Read the target update’s prerequisite list in its Microsoft documentation.
  3. Check whether KB2919442, KB2919355, and any package-specific prerequisites are already installed.
  4. Install missing prerequisites in the order specified for that package, then restart when requested.
  5. Install the target update again and record any new error code or message.

Do not assume that downloading the main package alone will bypass a prerequisite check. A mismatch between the package and the installed servicing level can reproduce 0x80070057 even after the update cache and system files are healthy.

Choose the repair path that matches the symptom

Observed clue Recommended action Change and reversibility
The failure appears during download or immediately after a previous failed attempt Run the troubleshooter, then reset SoftwareDistribution Windows recreates cached downloads; personal files are not targeted, but the update must be downloaded again
Several Windows components fail, or updates continue failing after a cache reset Run DISM, then sfc /scannow Repairs Windows component and protected files; let each command finish before restarting
There are read errors, inaccessible files, or recurring file-system warnings Back up first and run chkdsk /f C: Changes the file system and may require a restart; repeated errors warrant extra caution with the drive
The failure occurs only while security software scans an extracted package Use the vendor’s temporary, supported troubleshooting procedure Protection is paused only for the test and must be restored immediately
A Windows 8.1 manual package reports a prerequisite or parameter problem Verify KB2919442, KB2919355, and any package-specific requirements Installing prerequisites changes the servicing level; follow the package’s documented order
The code appears during backup, restore, or a non-update application Keep the backup, DISM/SFC, and disk checks, but follow the operation’s own repair guidance next Update-cache changes may not affect an unrelated operation

Common mistakes that make the error return

  • Skipping the backup: Microsoft explicitly recommends backing up personal files before troubleshooting.
  • Deleting the folder instead of its contents: Clear files inside SoftwareDistribution; leave the folder available for Windows to recreate its working structure.
  • Running commands without elevation: DISM, SFC, CHKDSK, and service-control commands can fail or do nothing from a standard Command Prompt.
  • Running SFC before DISM: Use DISM first so SFC has the best available component source.
  • Stopping a scan: A forced shutdown during DISM, SFC, or CHKDSK can create additional corruption.
  • Ignoring a required restart: The troubleshooter, cache reset, disk check, and many prerequisite updates complete only after Windows restarts.
  • Leaving security software disabled: Restore protection immediately after a controlled test.
  • Installing a Windows 8.1 package without checking prerequisites: Verify the KB requirements for the exact package and edition.
  • Repeating the same failed retry: Move to the next matching repair step and record the new message instead of repeatedly submitting an unchanged installation.

After the repair: verify the result

  1. Restart Windows after the final completed repair.
  2. Open Windows Update and check the update history or the specific update number you recorded.
  3. Install one update at a time if several are pending, restarting when Windows requests it.
  4. If the original operation was not Windows Update, repeat that same backup, restore, upgrade, or application task rather than assuming an update retry proves it is fixed.
  5. Keep the backup until the computer has completed the operation successfully and you have confirmed that your files remain accessible.

If 0x80070057 persists after the cache reset, DISM, SFC, disk check where indicated, security-software test, and prerequisite verification, the remaining cause is likely specific to the operation that produced the code. Preserve the exact error text, update number, Windows edition, and results of each command for the relevant Microsoft or software-vendor support channel.
