For Fallout 4 crashes, launch failures, or stuttering on PC, start with reversible checks: confirm your system meets the game’s requirements, update your graphics driver, temporarily disable mods and Creations, and verify the installation through your storefront. Change one thing at a time and retry the same point in the game so you can tell which step made a difference. These checks are diagnostic, not guaranteed fixes.
Identify when Fallout 4 fails
The failure point helps distinguish a launch problem from a crash during startup, a save-loading issue, or poor performance during play. Before changing anything, note the exact point where the game stops and whether you use Steam, Epic, or the Xbox app. Record your Windows version, hardware, game version, and whether mods or Creations are installed.

- Does the game fail before its launcher opens, or after you click Play?
- Does it close at the “Please Stand By…” screen, while loading a save, or during gameplay?
- Is the main problem a crash, a failure to launch, low performance, or stuttering?
Bethesda treats these as distinct support cases, including crashes after clicking Play, crashes at the “Please Stand By…” screen, and poor performance.
Check requirements and graphics drivers
Compare your PC with the requirements on the game’s live storefront page, then install a current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer. Bethesda lists hardware and outdated drivers among possible contributors to crashes or poor performance; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular system will be crash-free.

Steam’s listed minimum requirements include 64-bit Windows, an Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD Phenom II X4 945-class processor, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 550 Ti 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB-class graphics card, and 30 GB of storage. These are Steam’s published minimums, not a diagnosis of an individual PC. See Steam’s Fallout 4 technical issue and system requirements page for the current listing.
Temporarily disable mods and Creations
Disable mods and Creations, then retry the same launch or gameplay step. Bethesda warns that custom mods can cause in-game performance issues, but that does not identify any particular mod as the cause. If the game behaves normally with modifications disabled, re-enable them in small groups and test again to narrow down a possible conflict.

Back up saves and configuration files before removing files or making substantial changes to a heavily modded installation. Bethesda’s general warning is a reason to isolate modifications, not evidence that a specific mod is responsible.
For Steam launch failures, clear launch options and verify files
Bethesda warns that some Steam launch options may cause the game to crash. If Fallout 4 fails to start or crashes after you click Play, remove custom launch arguments first, then use Steam’s built-in verification. Make only one change at a time.

- In your Steam Library, right-click Fallout 4 and choose Properties.
- On the General page, clear the Launch Options field if it contains custom text.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- When verification finishes, launch the game and test the same failure point.
A verification message that one or more files failed to validate does not, by itself, prove that game content is damaged. Bethesda notes that local configuration files can account for files that fail verification. For Epic or the Xbox app, use the platform’s own repair or validation option where available; Bethesda’s PC crash support page links to repair guidance for Steam, Microsoft Xbox App, and Epic.
For stuttering or generally poor performance, reduce settings methodically
Start with the launcher’s detected video defaults, then test lower settings and resolution, close background applications, and try borderless or windowed display mode. Change one setting or condition at a time, then revisit the same scene or activity to compare behavior.

- Open the Fallout 4 launcher and restore the auto-detected video settings.
- If performance remains poor, lower graphics settings or resolution and test again.
- Close background applications that are not needed for the test.
- Try borderless or windowed display mode and check whether the stutter changes.
Bethesda’s poor-performance guidance includes these types of checks. A broad hardware upgrade is not a supported universal fix; compare your actual components with the published requirements and seek a diagnosis before buying parts.

If you have changed INI files or the settings appear persistently misconfigured, consider resetting Fallout 4’s configuration after backing up the files. Bethesda identifies Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini, and Fallout4Prefs.ini in DocumentsMy GamesFallout4 as files whose removal resets settings. This is a broader reset than changing a single video option, so try the reversible launcher and display checks first.

Keep the PC and console update notes separate
Bethesda’s May 13, 2024 Next Gen Update 2 notes list PC version 1.10.984 and general stability improvements. The notes’ 30, 40, and 60 frame-rate targets and Visuals/Performance priorities apply to Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5, not to a PC setting. Check Bethesda’s notes and your storefront for updates relevant to your installed build.
If the crashes continue, give support a reproducible report
If the reversible checks do not resolve the problem, contact Bethesda Support with enough detail to distinguish your case. Bethesda specifically recommends a DxDiag report for persistent crashes at the startup screen.
- Game version and storefront (Steam, Epic, or Xbox app)
- Windows version and PC hardware
- Whether mods or Creations are installed, and what you disabled or changed
- The exact crash point and the steps that reproduce it
- A DxDiag report, especially for a persistent startup-screen crash
Use Bethesda’s relevant support path for a PC crash, crash after clicking Play, “Please Stand By…” crash, or poor performance.
