Install Fallout 4 mods through the route that matches your platform, check each mod’s requirements before enabling it, and treat load-order advice as mod-specific. Bethesda Creations and PC mod-manager workflows are different; neither a successful installation nor an automatic sort guarantees that a combination of mods is compatible.
Choose the installation route for your platform

Install Bethesda Creations and resolve dependency errors
Before enabling a Creation
- Open the Creation’s description and note any required DLC, other Creations, community mods, or load-order placement.
- Add the Creation through Fallout 4’s in-game Creations section or add it to your Bethesda.net library, as supported by Bethesda’s Creations installation instructions.
- Enable it only after its listed requirements are installed and enabled; place it as directed by its own description rather than applying a universal order.
If Fallout 4 says a dependency is missing
Bethesda defines a dependency error as a required file that is absent or disabled. Its examples include DLC, another Creation, and a community mod. Check the error and the Creation description, then install or enable the named requirement before trying again. See Bethesda’s dependency-error guidance.

Use a PC mod manager without treating sorting as compatibility testing
On PC, a manager can organize mod installations and plugins and help expose file conflicts. Vortex documentation says it sorts plugins automatically using LOOT; that describes manager behavior, not a guarantee that every conflict will be found or every order will suit a specific mod. Review each mod’s requirements and any compatibility patches, and investigate conflicts that involve the mods you actually installed. The Vortex installation guide and Nexus Mods load-order guide are useful starting points, but their guidance is older and should be checked against current mod and game instructions.
Distinguish file conflicts from plugin order
A file conflict concerns competing files in an installation; plugin load order concerns the order in which plugins are loaded. Resolving an overwrite choice does not by itself settle plugin order, and sorting plugins does not establish that competing files are compatible. Follow the mod author’s instructions for both where available.

Run Fallout 4 with F4SE through Vortex
Script-extender setup is version-sensitive. The Vortex FAQ explains how to configure script-extender tools in the manager, but the available guidance here does not establish which F4SE release is compatible with every current Fallout 4 build. Check the current documentation for the specific F4SE release, game build, and mods you intend to use before configuring or launching it. A Creation cannot be enabled
- Read the error and identify the named requirement.
- Check whether the required DLC, Creation, or community mod is installed and enabled.
- Check the Creation’s description for its required load-order placement, then retry.
Bethesda’s dependency guidance explains that a required file can be missing or disabled.

A particular mod combination causes trouble on PC
- Review the instructions and compatibility notes for the affected mods.
- Check for required patches and investigate manager-reported file conflicts separately from plugin order.
- Use a load-order guide as a starting point, then follow the specific mod’s directions. No generic automatic sort establishes compatibility for every setup.
Xbox is stuck loading or will not start after activating many mods
Bethesda’s console support article addresses this specific case and recommends clearing the game’s Reserved Space on Xbox. Use its instructions for that recovery path: Bethesda’s Xbox loading/startup troubleshooting steps. This is a console-specific measure for the described failure, not a general PC fix or the first response to every load-order issue.
