Start by matching the fix to the symptom. A game that crashes during play needs a different first check from a Steam Play button that does nothing or a single save that freezes while loading. Note your storefront (Steam or Epic), Windows setup, graphics hardware, active mods, and exactly when the failure occurs. Then change one variable at a time so you know which step helped.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Use the timing of the failure as your first diagnostic. Fallout: New Vegas can fail in several distinct ways: it may crash during general play, return immediately to the launcher, do nothing after you click Play in Steam, freeze while loading one save, or crash while exiting. The official Bethesda procedures separate these cases because the useful checks are not identical.

Protect saves and record your setup
Before deleting configuration files, changing drivers, or disabling modifications, make a separate copy of your saves and any custom configuration you may want to restore. Keep more than one save slot. A single newest save can be corrupted even when earlier saves remain usable.

- Write down whether the copy is from Steam or Epic.
- Record your Windows version, graphics card, installed driver version, and whether the computer has both integrated and discrete graphics.
- List every active mod, loader, or third-party modification.
- Describe the exact point of failure: startup, after clicking Play, during a particular save load, during play, or while exiting.
- Change only one setting or file at a time, launch the game, and note the result.
These notes make it easier to undo a change and give Bethesda or your platform’s support team useful information if the basic sequence does not resolve the problem.

Fix a general crash during play
Use this sequence when the game launches but crashes broadly, at unpredictable points, or in more than one save. It follows Bethesda’s general PC troubleshooting order.
1. Confirm the minimum system requirements
Check that the computer meets the game’s published minimum requirements before changing advanced settings. If a requirement is not met, configuration edits cannot make the unsupported hardware reliable. Do not infer a requirement from another edition or from a different storefront.
2. Update or reassess the graphics driver
Install a driver appropriate for your graphics hardware from the hardware vendor, then retest. Bethesda documents a specific, conditional problem: some AMD RX Series systems may be unable to launch with Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1. If—and only if—that hardware and driver combination matches your computer, consult the vendor’s current driver information and consider returning to a prior driver. A rollback is not a general recommendation for every AMD card or every crash.
3. Verify the installation through your storefront
Run the platform’s built-in file verification for Fallout: New Vegas. The launcher may download or replace damaged files. Do not use a path intended for another storefront; open the game properties or library controls in the storefront you actually use.
4. Check permissions and security software
Confirm that your Windows account and the game installation have the permissions needed to read and write required files. Review antivirus or endpoint-security exclusions for the game only when you trust the installation and understand your security software’s procedure. Re-enable protection after testing if an exclusion does not solve the problem.
5. Rebuild the game configuration
Delete the Fallout: New Vegas INI files in the FalloutNV folder under your Documents directory, keeping the backup you made first. The game will recreate configuration files on the next launch. This resets local settings; it does not repair a corrupted save, so keep your save backups separate.

6. Make sure Steam is not running in compatibility mode
If you use Steam, open the Steam executable’s Windows compatibility properties and ensure compatibility mode is not enabled for Steam itself. A compatibility setting applied to the storefront can interfere with how the game starts.

Use Windows’ compatibility troubleshooter on the Fallout: New Vegas launcher. Bethesda presents this as a diagnostic option, not a guarantee that a particular compatibility profile fixes every modern Windows installation. Record the original settings so you can reverse the test.
8. Retest without modifications
If the installation is modded, temporarily disable or uninstall third-party modifications and test the unmodified game. A crash that disappears in a vanilla launch points to the mod stack or its configuration rather than proving that the base files are defective.
Fix a game that will not launch
Use this branch when clicking the game’s launcher or executable fails, the launcher closes immediately, or the storefront reports that the game stopped without showing a useful error.
Delete Fallout.ini first
Back up the file, then delete Fallout.ini from the FalloutNV folder in Documents. On the next start, the game generates a fresh configuration. If you have customized settings, compare the backup later instead of copying every line back at once; restore one change at a time if needed.
Verify files in the correct storefront
Run file verification after removing the INI. Steam and Epic place their installed files in different locations, so use the installation-management controls in your own library to open the real folder and verification command. A path copied from a guide for another platform can point to the wrong files and produce a misleading result.

Test FalloutNV.exe compatibility and elevation
Locate FalloutNV.exe in the actual installation folder. Bethesda suggests testing Windows 7 compatibility mode for that executable and, if necessary, running it as administrator. Treat both as reversible diagnostics: test one setting, launch, and then return to the prior setting if it has no effect or introduces a new problem.
Separate launch failure from save failure
If the executable reaches the main menu, the issue is no longer a pure launch failure. Stop changing launch compatibility settings and move to the symptom that follows—general crashing, a specific save that will not load, or an exit crash.
When Steam’s Play button does nothing
Bethesda has a separate Steam procedure for the case where you click Play and apparently nothing happens. Work through these reversible checks in order.

Unplug any connected controller before pressing Play, then test the launch. This is a diagnostic variable, not a permanent requirement to play without a controller. Reconnect it after testing if the game starts normally.
Assign FalloutNV.exe to the primary GPU
On a computer with integrated and discrete graphics, open Windows or your graphics vendor’s per-application graphics settings and assign FalloutNV.exe to the primary high-performance GPU. Check which adapter is actually selected rather than assuming the discrete card is in use.
Review power-saving graphics settings
Power-saving policies can select integrated graphics for a game. Temporarily choose the performance-oriented option for Fallout: New Vegas, launch once, and then decide whether the change is acceptable for your battery and heat limits.

Check DirectX availability
Confirm that the DirectX components required by the game are present and functioning. Use the operating system’s diagnostic information rather than downloading random DLL files from third-party sites.

Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential startup services disabled, helping identify conflicts from overlays, monitoring tools, security utilities, or other background software. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version, test the game, and restore normal startup services afterward. If the game works only in a clean boot, re-enable services in groups until the conflicting program is identified.
Review Game DVR settings
Temporarily disable Windows Game DVR or related capture features, then test Steam’s Play button again. Restore the feature if it is not involved; do not leave unrelated settings disabled without a reason.
Use DxDiag and Windows Error Reporting for an AMD-specific lead
If Steam still does nothing, inspect a DxDiag report and the Windows Error Reporting entry for an FalloutNV.exe APPCRASH. Bethesda identifies an amdvlk64.dll conflict as a possible AMD-related cause in this diagnostic context. Treat that name as a clue to investigate with current AMD support information—not as permission to delete DLLs blindly. Removing system or driver files can create a larger problem.
Recover from a freeze while loading the newest save
If the game reaches the menu and freezes or crashes only when loading the latest save, first suspect that save rather than changing system-wide launch settings. Bethesda says the most recent save may have become corrupted.
- Exit the game without overwriting the affected save.
- Copy your save folder and retain several backup copies.
- Start the game and load an earlier save from before the problem appeared.
- Play briefly and make a new save in a different slot.
- Test that new save before attempting the original again.
If earlier saves load and the newest one does not, continue from the working save. If every save now fails to load, return to the general crash and launch branches, disable modifications, verify files, and rebuild configuration. Bethesda lists starting a new game as a possible final recovery step when the loading problem persists. It is not an early fix for an ordinary startup crash, and it will not restore progress contained only in a corrupted save.

Stop exit crashes and isolate mod instability
For a crash that occurs when quitting, or instability that began after adding a mod, test the unmodified installation first.
Disable or uninstall third-party modifications
Turn off the mod or temporarily remove the entire third-party modification set according to the mod manager’s instructions. Keep copies of your saves and mod profiles. Launch, load a safe test save, and exit. If the exit crash disappears, re-enable modifications in small groups to identify the incompatible change.
Scan for missing or corrupt files
Run the storefront’s official verification flow after modifications are disabled. Verification can restore altered base files, but it does not guarantee that every mod-specific file or configuration is compatible.

Bethesda’s Steam instructions warn that one or more files can fail verification normally because local configuration files should not be altered by the process. A nonzero failed-file count is therefore not automatic proof that the installation is broken. Let Steam complete its process, launch again, and compare the actual symptom rather than repeating verification indefinitely.
Choose the next branch by storefront, GPU, and save scope

Keep a short log containing the change, the launch result, and whether the test used a vanilla profile or your normal mod list. This prevents two fixes from being applied simultaneously and makes a later support report much more useful.
When the official steps do not resolve it
Bethesda’s published procedures do not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every current Windows build, graphics card, storefront version, or mod stack. If the sequence above fails, gather precise evidence before contacting support:
- Storefront and installation location.
- Windows version and whether Steam itself has compatibility mode enabled.
- Graphics card model, integrated/discrete arrangement, and driver version.
- Whether the game is vanilla or modded, including the mod manager and active list.
- The exact failure point and whether all saves or only one are affected.
- DxDiag information and the Windows Error Reporting fault module when a Steam launch produces an
APPCRASH. - Which files were verified, which configuration files were regenerated, and the result of each one-variable test.
Send that information through the relevant Bethesda or platform support channel. Do not remove driver DLLs, delete saves, or apply an unrelated compatibility tweak simply because another symptom sounds similar.
