There is no single fix that stops every Fallout: New Vegas crash on Windows 10: the cause may be a driver, damaged configuration file, storefront limitation, overlay, save, or mod conflict. Work through the checks below in order, starting with your crash symptom and whether the game is modded. Back up saves before changing files, and treat compatibility settings and stability tools as tests—not guaranteed cures.
Identify when the crash happens
| Symptom | Start with |
|---|---|
| Launcher opens, but Play does nothing | Unplug controllers, disable overlays, check antivirus and GPU selection, verify files, and investigate the driver. If a crash report names amdvlk64.dll, follow the AMD branch below. |
| Crash immediately after clicking Play | Reset the INI files, check compatibility settings, verify files, and investigate driver or blocked-DLL problems. |
| “Failed to initialize renderer” | Move the Fallout INI files out of the configuration folder, verify files, and check which GPU and driver the game is using. |
| Crash while loading or entering a cell | Test a new game, then investigate the save and any mods or plugins that affect the area or characters. |
| Random crashes during play | Test without mods, overlays, or recording tools; check configuration and frame-rate behavior. |
| Crashes only with mods | Disable all mods and plugins, then re-enable them in groups to isolate the conflict. |
| Crashes began after a driver update | Install a suitable current driver or, if the timing and GPU match a documented issue, test a rollback. |
| Crashes only when exiting | Test overlays and mods. Prioritize crashes that interrupt play or risk save progress first. |
Bethesda has separate guidance for general crashes, failure to launch, and renderer initialization errors: general PC troubleshooting, launch problems, and renderer errors.

Start with reversible checks
Back up saves
Before resetting files or changing mods, copy DocumentsMy GamesFalloutNVSaves somewhere safe. Preserve custom INI files too. If you use a mod manager, back up its profile or create a new one for testing; do not overwrite a valuable save during diagnosis.
Restart, unplug peripherals, and turn off overlays temporarily
Restart Windows, then test with controllers unplugged. Temporarily disable Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar/Game DVR, GPU recording and performance overlays, and other background capture tools. Bethesda lists controllers, overlays, Game DVR, antivirus, and background software among possible launch factors. Re-enable each item after testing so you can identify which one matters rather than leaving features off without reason.

Check antivirus and permissions
If security software may be blocking the game, add a narrow exclusion for the legitimate game and launcher folders or consult the security product’s quarantine history. Do not disable antivirus permanently or download replacement DLLs from unofficial file sites. Exclusions reduce protection for the excluded files.
If the game works only when run as administrator, treat that as a clue about permissions or security software rather than a final fix. Check controlled-folder access, antivirus, and whether the game is installed in a heavily protected location before relying on elevated permissions.
Update or diagnose the graphics driver
Install a driver intended for the GPU the game actually uses. If crashes began directly after a driver update, testing a previous suitable version or performing a clean driver installation can help distinguish a driver regression from a game-file problem.
Bethesda documents a specific launch issue for some AMD RX-series users on Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1 and recommends rolling back if that version is installed. This is a version-specific exception, not a general instruction to downgrade all AMD drivers. For a launch failure, Bethesda also recommends checking Windows Error Reporting for amdvlk64.dll; if it appears in connection with FalloutNV, investigate the AMD driver installation and consult AMD’s Cleanup Utility instructions. See Bethesda’s general troubleshooting page and launch troubleshooting.

Verify the game files
On Steam, open Library, right-click Fallout: New Vegas, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. On Epic or the Xbox app, use that storefront’s equivalent verification or repair option. Verification can replace damaged files, though some configuration files may be recreated or reported during the process; Bethesda notes that a file failing verification is not always evidence that the repair failed in its launch guidance.
Reset Fallout: New Vegas configuration files
Close the game and launcher. In C:Users<username>DocumentsMy GamesFalloutNV, move the files below to the desktop instead of permanently deleting them:
Fallout.iniFalloutPrefs.iniFalloutNV.iniFalloutNVPrefs.ini
Not every installation has all four. Run the launcher once to generate clean configuration files, then test the game. Bethesda recommends resetting INI files for launch and renderer problems (launch guidance; renderer guidance).
If you use Mod Organizer 2 (MO2), check the active profile: it may use profile-specific INIs, so moving files from Documents alone might not reset the configuration the game is reading. Restore the moved files if the reset does not help.

Test compatibility settings without changing everything at once
Make sure Steam is not in compatibility mode
Bethesda advises that Steam itself should not be running in compatibility mode. Exit Steam completely, right-click its shortcut, select Properties → Compatibility, and ensure compatibility mode is off. Reopen Steam and test.
Test FalloutNV.exe separately
Open the game’s root folder—the folder containing FalloutNV.exe—then right-click FalloutNV.exe and select Properties → Compatibility. As a test, try Windows 7 compatibility mode; if needed, separately test Run this program as an administrator. Apply one change at a time and undo it if the result gets worse. Bethesda lists these as possible remedies, not universal fixes: launch troubleshooting.
Do not apply compatibility settings indiscriminately to Steam, the launcher, MO2, and every executable. That makes it harder to tell what changed the result.
Check the GPU on a laptop
A laptop with integrated and discrete graphics may launch the game on the power-saving GPU. In Windows Graphics settings or the NVIDIA/AMD control panel, add FalloutNV.exe and assign the high-performance GPU. Test while connected to AC power and, temporarily, with a high-performance power profile. Bethesda identifies power-saving GPU selection as a possible launch factor in its Play-button troubleshooting.

If the game is modded, establish a clean baseline
Do not install another “crash fix” before finding out whether the game works without your current setup. Disable every mod and plugin using your mod manager, then test a new game. If it works, re-enable mods in small groups and test after each group; split a failing group in half and repeat until the conflict is isolated. Also test a new game separately from the old save: if only one save crashes, a damaged save or a removed, changed, or missing mod dependency may be involved.
- Check whether the mod supports your game version, storefront, and language.
- Confirm that script-extender plugins and their dependencies are installed and current for your setup.
- Review load order and the active mod-manager profile.
- After adding one mod, first disable that mod and its requirements if the crash begins.
- Use a crash logger as diagnostic evidence, not as proof that the first named DLL or plugin caused the crash.
The xNVSE project recommends disabling other mods when diagnosing an xNVSE-related crash and using a crash logger when reporting problems: xNVSE documentation. Adding multiple unrelated stability DLLs can introduce new conflicts; prefer one maintained guide and follow its compatibility instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a stability-focused setup only if vanilla testing is not enough
For a persistent problem or a player who wants a modernized mod setup, the community-maintained Viva New Vegas guide provides a structured route instead of a pile of unverified fixes. Its stability-focused utilities include xNVSE, a storefront-specific 4GB patcher, Vanilla BSA Patcher, Ultimate Edition ESM Fixes Remastered, JIP LN NVSE Plugin, JohnnyGuitar NVSE, ShowOff xNVSE Plugin, New Vegas Tick Fix (NVTF), UI Organizer, Crash Logger, and FNV Mod Limit Fix. Follow the current guide as a coherent setup rather than mixing pieces from old instructions.
The guide’s stated requirements are 64-bit Windows 10 or higher, all DLC, an English installation from Steam, GOG, or Epic, and at least 19GB of free drive space including the game; it does not support Microsoft Store editions. Viva New Vegas is a community guide, not Bethesda support. Check its requirements before starting.

Install xNVSE in the game root
xNVSE supports Steam and GOG, while the project says Xbox Game Pass and Bethesda.net versions are unsupported. Download a release, not GitHub’s source-code ZIP. Copy the release’s .dll and .exe files into the game root—the folder containing FalloutNV.exe and FalloutNVLauncher.exe—not the Data folder. Do not install xNVSE like a normal MO2 mod. Launch with nvse_loader.exe, or launch through FalloutNV.exe after applying the appropriate 4GB patcher. See the xNVSE installation and compatibility instructions.
Use the patcher for your storefront
The 4GB patcher lets the game use up to 4GB of RAM; it does not turn the game into a modern 64-bit application or guarantee crash-free play. According to Viva New Vegas, Steam and GOG users should place FNVpatch.exe in the game root and run it. A successful run reports FalloutNV.exe patched! and creates FalloutNV_backup.exe. Keep that backup for recovery. Epic users need the Epic Games Patcher instead; do not use the Steam/GOG patcher on the Xbox/Microsoft Store version.
Understand what NVTF does
Viva New Vegas describes New Vegas Tick Fix as addressing micro-stutter, performance, and higher-frame-rate behavior, with an approximately 120 FPS safe maximum in its guide. It is not a universal crash cure, and a high-refresh-rate monitor is not a reason to let the game run at unlimited FPS. Use the guide’s instructions rather than assuming display refresh rate and game frame behavior are the same thing.
Storefront differences that change the fix
| Edition | xNVSE and patcher guidance | Typical location or note |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | xNVSE supported; use the Steam/GOG 4GB patcher. | Often C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout New Vegas. |
| GOG | xNVSE supported; use the Steam/GOG 4GB patcher. | Use the game directory selected during installation. |
| Epic Games Store | xNVSE supported with the Epic-specific 4GB patcher. | Commonly under C:Program FilesEpic GamesFallout New Vegas. |
| Xbox app/Microsoft Store | xNVSE does not support Xbox Game Pass/Microsoft Store installations; do not use the Steam/GOG patcher or assume a guide requiring a writable root will apply. | Bethesda lists C:XboxGamesFallout- New Vegas Ultimate Edition (PC)Content for an Xbox app installation. |
| German “No Gore” release | The cited project guides say this release is incompatible with xNVSE. | Use a supported version only where legally and technically appropriate. |
Paths can differ if you chose another install location. Bethesda lists storefront-specific locations and general troubleshooting at its PC support page; xNVSE’s supported editions are documented in its README.

Try DirectX and a clean boot if ordinary checks fail
Bethesda recommends checking that DirectX is current and testing a Windows clean boot for persistent launch trouble. A clean boot is diagnostic, not a permanent gaming configuration: if the game works, re-enable services in batches and retest until the conflicting background program or service is identified. See Bethesda’s launch troubleshooting.
When a clean reinstall is worth the effort
Consider a clean reinstall if verification and an INI reset do not help, or if the game directory contains unknown DLLs, old script extenders, or abandoned performance fixes. Back up saves, custom INIs, and mod-manager profiles first. Uninstall through the storefront, check for leftover files in the old game directory before reinstalling, and test the unmodded game before restoring mods. For a modded game, a new MO2 profile can isolate a clean setup without immediately discarding the existing one.
Quick Recap
Final check before changing more
- Is the crash vanilla-only, mod-only, or limited to one save?
- Did you test with controllers and overlays disconnected or disabled?
- Are the correct GPU and driver being used, including checking for the AMD-specific symptoms above?
- Did you verify files and regenerate the active INI configuration?
- Did you test compatibility settings one at a time and undo changes that worsened stability?
- Does your storefront support the patcher and script extender you plan to use?
- Did you preserve saves and backups before changing files or mods?
