FastCGI errors are communication failures between a web server and an application process such as PHP-FPM. Fix them by identifying the failed phase—connection, request transmission, response reading, or response validity—then making the web server, PHP-FPM listener, socket permissions, script path, and timeout policy agree. A 502 Bad Gateway is a symptom, not a diagnosis: restoring a stopped PHP-FPM service, correcting a stale socket path, or removing a capacity bottleneck is usually more effective than changing browser settings or blindly increasing timeouts.

Start with the exact error, not the status code
Capture the complete log entry at the time of a failing request. Read the Nginx error log or Apache error log while reproducing the problem, and preserve the upstream address, Unix-socket path or TCP port, operating-system error, and wording such as “while connecting,” “while sending,” or “while reading response.” Those details identify the next check.

The web-server log is where the useful distinction appears:
- Connection failure: “connect() failed,” “connection refused,” “no such file or directory,” or a connect timeout means the server could not establish a FastCGI connection.
- Send failure: an error while sending the request indicates that the connection was made but the request could not be delivered completely.
- Read timeout: the backend accepted the request but did not produce data within the configured read interval.
- Invalid response: malformed or incomplete FastCGI headers indicate that the backend closed the connection, crashed, or returned bytes that do not form a valid response.
- Application failure: PHP warnings, fatal errors, out-of-memory events, database waits, or a saturated process pool can cause a slow or broken upstream response even when the listener itself is healthy.
Do not treat these categories as interchangeable. A refused connection calls for a service or endpoint check; a read timeout calls for an application and capacity investigation; an invalid header calls for backend logs and process stability.

Verify that PHP-FPM is running and listening
Before editing web-server settings, verify the FastCGI process and the endpoint it actually exposes. The service name varies by distribution and PHP version, so identify the installed unit rather than assuming a single name.
- Check the service status, for example with
systemctl status php-fpmor the versioned unit used by your operating system. - Inspect recent service messages with
journalctl -u php-fpm --since "15 minutes ago", substituting the correct unit. - Confirm a listener exists. For TCP, use a socket listing such as
ss -ltnpand locate the configured address and port. For a Unix socket, usefindorls -lon the path configured by the PHP-FPM pool. - Compare the listener with the endpoint in Nginx
fastcgi_passor Apache’s FastCGI proxy URL. A healthy PHP-FPM process is irrelevant if the web server points to a different port or socket.
Typical outcomes are straightforward: start or restart a stopped PHP-FPM service, correct a port mismatch, or update the web-server configuration to the socket that the active pool creates. If a restart immediately fails, read the PHP-FPM journal before changing Nginx or Apache; configuration syntax, a missing directory, or an exhausted resource may be preventing the pool from starting.
Fix Nginx FastCGI connection and script-path errors
Make fastcgi_pass match the listener
Nginx can connect to PHP-FPM over TCP or through a Unix-domain socket. The directive must match exactly:
fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000;
for a TCP listener, or:
fastcgi_pass unix:/path/to/php-fpm.sock;
for a socket. Replace the examples with the address, port, and path reported by your PHP-FPM pool. A “connection refused” message generally means nothing is listening at that TCP endpoint, while “No such file or directory” generally means the named socket does not exist. Neither condition is fixed by a browser refresh.
Check Unix-socket ownership and mode
A socket may exist and still reject Nginx. Inspect its owner, group, and mode with ls -l /path/to/php-fpm.sock. The PHP-FPM pool settings for the socket owner and group must allow the account used by Nginx workers to open it. Correct the pool or directory permissions, then reload or restart the affected service and test again. Record the intended path and ownership: package upgrades, a new PHP version, or a changed pool can recreate a socket with a different name or mode.

Set the real script filename
Nginx must tell PHP-FPM which script to execute. A common location block uses the document root together with the requested script name:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallfastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
Use the actual document root for this virtual host. If it points to the wrong directory, PHP-FPM can report that a script is missing, execute an unintended file, or reject the request even though the FastCGI connection succeeds. Check the resolved path against the file on disk, especially after moving a site, changing a symlink, or adding a separate front controller.
Pass required request metadata
For POST requests, pass the request method, content type, and content length as required by the Nginx FastCGI configuration:
fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method;
fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type;
fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length;
Keep the rest of the pool’s expected CGI parameters intact. Missing metadata can make form submissions or API requests behave differently from simple GET requests, so test both request types after a change.
Validate and reload safely
- Run
nginx -tand fix every reported syntax or include-file error. - Reload Nginx only after the test succeeds, using the service manager or
nginx -s reloadwhere appropriate. - Repeat the failing URL and watch the error log at the same time.
- Confirm that static files still work, a small PHP endpoint returns normally, and the original dynamic request no longer produces the logged FastCGI error.
Fix Apache mod_proxy_fcgi failures
Load the required modules
Apache’s FastCGI proxying requires mod_proxy and mod_proxy_fcgi. On systems that package modules separately, enable both, then verify the loaded-module list before troubleshooting the backend. Apache can also use mod_fcgid, but its directives and process model differ; do not mix examples from the two modules.

Point the proxy at the real PHP-FPM endpoint
The backend URL must identify the PHP-FPM host and port or the documented Unix-socket form. Match it to the pool’s listening configuration exactly. A typo in the host, a port changed during a PHP upgrade, or a socket path that belongs to an old pool produces the same user-facing 502 as a stopped service, so compare both sides rather than guessing.
Understand connection reuse
Apache’s mod_proxy_fcgi does not automatically make every backend configuration safe for concurrent connection reuse. Apache documentation describes reuse as an opt-in behavior for applications that can handle concurrent reused connections. Enable it only when the PHP-FPM setup and application are designed for that pattern; otherwise, unexpected concurrency can look like intermittent timeouts or refused requests.
Apply and test configuration changes
- Check Apache syntax with
apachectl configtest(or the distribution’s equivalent). - Reload Apache after a successful test; restart only when a reload cannot apply the relevant module or process change.
- Inspect the Apache error log during a request and compare its proxy target with the PHP-FPM listener.
- Test a small PHP script and then the original application route, because a valid proxy connection does not prove that the application’s script path, environment, or database calls are correct.
Choose the right timeout to investigate
Nginx separates FastCGI timeouts by phase. Treating them as one “PHP timeout” hides the cause.
| Directive | What it limits | What a failure suggests |
|---|---|---|
fastcgi_connect_timeout |
Time allowed to establish the connection | Wrong endpoint, unavailable listener, network path, or a saturated backend that cannot accept connections |
fastcgi_send_timeout |
Time between successive writes while sending the request | Backend or connection stopped accepting request data |
fastcgi_read_timeout |
Time between successive reads while waiting for a response | Slow application code, database or external-service wait, exhausted PHP-FPM workers, or an interval set below the legitimate request duration |
A read timeout is not proof that the request needs a larger limit. First inspect PHP-FPM worker counts, slow-request logs, CPU and memory pressure, database latency, locks, and calls to external services. If the operation is demonstrably expected to take longer and capacity is healthy, increase only the relevant limit and document why. Raising every timeout can keep stalled requests open longer, consume workers, and turn a recoverable slowdown into pool exhaustion.

Separate backend capacity problems from endpoint mistakes
When PHP-FPM is running but requests still fail, inspect the pool as a finite queue. A pool at its worker limit may accept no new connection, or it may accept requests that then wait long enough to hit a read timeout. Look for messages about reaching the maximum children, slow requests, terminated workers, memory exhaustion, or repeated child crashes.
- If a tiny PHP script works while one route times out, focus on that route’s database queries, file operations, loops, and external calls.
- If every PHP request fails, focus on the service state, listener, socket permissions, and web-server endpoint.
- If failures occur only during traffic spikes, compare concurrent requests with the PHP-FPM pool limit and available CPU and memory before increasing any timeout.
- If workers disappear or restart, inspect PHP-FPM and system logs for fatal errors, out-of-memory kills, and extension problems.
Apply one change at a time and retest. Changing the socket path, pool size, and timeout simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the actual cause and can mask a configuration error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand retries and partial responses
Nginx’s fastcgi_next_upstream can retry eligible upstream failures such as connection errors, timeouts, denied connections, and invalid headers. It applies only before Nginx has sent response bytes to the client. Once part of a response has reached the client, retrying another backend cannot safely replace it.
Recommended Free Tools
Retries therefore do not repair a missing socket, a stopped PHP-FPM service, or a consistently broken application. They can also repeat a non-idempotent request if the backend performed work before the connection failed. Use retry behavior deliberately, limit it to failures that are safe for the request, and fix the underlying listener or application rather than treating retries as capacity.
Apache retry behavior depends on its proxy and backend configuration. Review that configuration separately; an Nginx directive has no effect on Apache.

A repeatable diagnostic checklist
- Reproduce and capture: record the complete Nginx or Apache log line, timestamp, URL, HTTP method, upstream address, socket path, errno, and failure phase.
- Check the process: verify PHP-FPM is active, review its recent logs, and confirm that the expected pool is the one serving the site.
- Check the endpoint: compare the listener from
ssor the socket listing withfastcgi_passor Apache’s proxy URL. - Check access: verify the web-server worker can traverse the socket directory and open the socket; correct owner, group, and mode where necessary.
- Check script identity: confirm Nginx
SCRIPT_FILENAMEor Apache’s proxy environment resolves to the intended document-root file. - Check request metadata: test GET and POST requests and ensure required CGI parameters are passed.
- Check application health: inspect worker saturation, slow requests, database waits, memory, CPU, and process crashes.
- Adjust one control: change only the timeout or pool setting justified by the evidence, validate syntax, reload, and retest.
- Check response safety: review retry rules and do not rely on retries after response bytes have been sent.
Nginx and Apache: what differs
| Axis | Nginx | Apache |
|---|---|---|
| FastCGI integration | ngx_http_fastcgi_module |
mod_proxy plus mod_proxy_fcgi, or mod_fcgid |
| Backend address | fastcgi_pass to TCP or a Unix socket |
FastCGI backend URL for a PHP-FPM host/port or documented socket form |
| Script identity | fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME |
Proxy configuration and PHP-FPM environment parameters |
| Timeout controls | fastcgi_connect_timeout, fastcgi_send_timeout, and fastcgi_read_timeout |
Module-specific connection and process-lifetime settings |
| Retry behavior | fastcgi_next_upstream for eligible pre-response failures |
Depends on proxy and backend configuration |
The practical distinction is where you look first: Nginx errors often expose the exact fastcgi_pass target and phase, while Apache troubleshooting begins with loaded proxy modules and the configured backend URL. In both servers, the decisive checks are the same: a live FastCGI process, a matching endpoint, usable permissions, a correct script path, and capacity appropriate to the workload.
When to involve server administration
Escalate when you cannot safely change service ownership, PHP-FPM pool limits, Apache modules, or Nginx virtual-host configuration; when package upgrades repeatedly recreate the wrong socket; or when failures involve memory pressure, kernel-level resource limits, or a database outside the web server. Provide the administrator with the exact log line, affected URL and method, timestamp, PHP-FPM unit and pool, listener address or socket path, recent configuration changes, and whether a minimal PHP script succeeds. That evidence shortens diagnosis and prevents generic timeout changes from hiding the real fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a missing PHP-FPM socket produce a 502?
Nginx or Apache is attempting to open a Unix-domain socket path that does not exist or is no longer the active pool’s path. Confirm the pool’s actual listen setting, update the backend endpoint, and verify directory and socket permissions.
Should I increase fastcgi_read_timeout for every 504?
No. First determine whether PHP-FPM workers, database calls, or external services are stalled. Increase the read interval only when the operation is expected to take longer and backend capacity is healthy; otherwise the longer limit can hold workers and worsen saturation.
Can restarting Nginx fix a refused FastCGI connection?
Only if Nginx itself has stale configuration and the backend endpoint is already correct. A refused connection usually means PHP-FPM is stopped, listening elsewhere, or unable to accept connections, so inspect and restore the backend first.
Why does a simple PHP file work while the application still times out?
The FastCGI path is probably functional, while the application route is waiting on code, a database, a lock, an external service, or exhausted worker capacity. Compare slow-request and application logs for that route.
