1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst find where the audio clips: compare the original recording, the audio entering FFmpeg, and the encoded output. If distortion is already in the source, lowering FFmpeg’s output level can make it quieter but cannot restore the lost waveform. If clipping starts in the filter chain, reduce gain before the stage that overloads. Test any change on a short segment containing quiet speech, normal speech, and the loudest expected moments before applying it to a continuous stream.
Find the stage where clipping begins
Clipping can enter during capture, inside FFmpeg’s processing chain, or later in the encoded output. The fix depends on which stage is responsible; applying a downstream filter cannot be assumed to undo distortion already present upstream.
- Listen to the earliest available source. Check the capture device or original class recording for harsh, crunchy speech or visibly flattened peaks.
- Compare the FFmpeg input and output. If possible, save or monitor the input audio separately, then compare the same loud passage with the encoded result.
- Inspect intermediate stages. If the source sounds clean but the output does not, review the filter graph for gain, mixing, normalization, or encoding steps that could raise the level.
- Test a representative excerpt. Include quiet speech, ordinary speech, and the loudest expected moments. Keep the original recording unchanged so you can compare and revert.
If the clipping is already present in the source, reduce the level only to avoid making it worse downstream; quieter damaged audio is still damaged. If FFmpeg introduces the distortion, adjust the gain before the overloaded stage and verify the resulting output.
Prevent new clipping in the FFmpeg chain
Review every operation that can increase level, including volume, mixing, and normalization. Lower input or mix gain before the signal reaches a constrained stage, and leave headroom before encoding. FFmpeg’s compand examples include hard-limiter curves, but limiting changes peak dynamics. Do not add a gain boost after a limiter without checking the output again.

There is no universal safe filter chain for this case: the right settings depend on the input, filter graph, codec, and the delivery service’s loudness requirements. If your class platform or institution specifies a loudness or true-peak target, use that specification rather than choosing a target by guesswork.
Choose a filter for the problem you have
| Tool or approach | Best suited to | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Reduce volume or mix gain |
Preventing overload when FFmpeg’s own processing pushes the signal too high | Does not reconstruct a source that was clipped before FFmpeg. |
loudnorm |
Managing loudness and true peak in a continuous feed | Targets must match delivery requirements; confirm behavior in the installed FFmpeg build. |
dynaudnorm |
Adjusting level variations over time, frame by frame | Levels may move over time; buffering and latency need checking in the actual pipeline. |
adeclip |
Attempting to repair an already-clipped recording | Interpolation is approximate and cannot guarantee recovery of lost detail. |
Use loudnorm for a continuous loudness target
The FFmpeg Filters Documentation describes loudnorm as EBU R128 loudness normalization with dynamic and linear modes. It supports single-pass processing for livestreams and files, and double-pass processing for files. Single-pass mode is relevant to a 24/7 feed because the complete future program is not available for two-pass analysis.

The documented option ranges are integrated loudness (IL) from -70 to -5 LUFS, loudness range (LRA) from 1 to 50 LU, and maximum true peak (TP) from -9 to 0 dBTP. The documented defaults are -24 LUFS, 7 LU, and -2 dBTP. These are filter limits and defaults, not a recommendation for every educational platform. Check the required target, then review loudness and true-peak behavior on representative material.
Consider dynaudnorm when levels vary within the class
dynaudnorm adjusts gain frame by frame to raise quieter sections while limiting gain on louder sections. The FFmpeg Filters Documentation gives a default frame length of 500 ms, with an allowed range of 10–8000 ms, and a default peak target of 0.95. The documentation describes 0.95 as leaving 5% headroom and advises not exceeding it.

The Gaussian smoothing window controls how quickly gain changes: a larger window smooths changes but slows adaptation; a smaller one allows faster changes. Check buffering and latency in the specific real-time pipeline before using it for a live feed. Dynamic normalization does not prevent overload that occurs earlier in the signal path.
Try adeclip only on audio that is already damaged
FFmpeg’s adeclip attempts to replace detected clipped samples with interpolated samples using autoregressive modelling. Its documented analysis window ranges from 10 to 100 ms, with a default of 55 ms, alongside other detection and interpolation controls. Results depend on the damage and settings: compare a short before-and-after excerpt, retain the untouched source, and treat the output as a repair attempt rather than recovered original audio.

Verify the change before running it continuously
- Listen to the same quiet, normal, and loud passages in the source and processed output.
- Check whether distortion is reduced without making speech unnaturally uneven or changing levels abruptly.
- Review loudness and true-peak output when using
loudnorm, against the actual delivery target. - Check real-time buffering and latency when using
dynaudnorm. - Confirm the filter’s options and defaults against the FFmpeg version installed on the streaming machine; the official documentation is continuously maintained.
- Roll out the change only after the short test sounds acceptable. Keep the original file and a known-good command or filter graph for recovery.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
The output is quieter, but distortion remains
The source or an earlier stage may already be clipped. Find the earliest distorted version and correct capture gain for future recordings. A later level reduction cannot reconstruct the missing waveform; adeclip can only attempt interpolation on existing damage.
The source sounds clean, but the FFmpeg output clips
Inspect gain and mixing steps in the filter graph, including boosts applied after other processing. Reduce gain before the stage where overload begins, then re-encode and listen to the same passage.

Speech level shifts too much over time
If you are using dynaudnorm, evaluate its frame length and Gaussian smoothing window. A longer smoothing window changes gain more gradually but adapts more slowly; a shorter one adapts faster. Confirm that the behavior and latency suit the actual live pipeline.
Declipping sounds worse or unnatural
Interpolation may not suit the particular damage or settings. Compare several short excerpts, retain the original, and avoid applying a repair setting across the full archive until you have checked the result.
