To fix gaps between songs in an FFmpeg playlist, first determine whether the silence or stall is already present in FFmpeg’s output. If it is, check file durations, audio/video stream end times, and whether every playlist item has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. The concat demuxer uses each file’s reported duration to place the next one, so incorrect duration metadata can create boundary artifacts. If the local output is continuous but YouTube playback falters, investigate ingest and network health instead.
Find out whether the gap comes from the playlist or YouTube
Compare the FFmpeg output locally with a recording or preview of the YouTube stream. If the same silence or visual pause appears in the local output, focus on the media files and their timestamps. If local playback is continuous but YouTube shows problems, check encoder settings, upload bandwidth, preview, and stream health. A healthy YouTube ingest does not prove the playlist itself is gapless, and more bandwidth will not repair a faulty file timeline.
Check file durations and stream end times
The concat demuxer advances the next file’s timestamps using the previous file’s duration. FFmpeg warns: “The duration of each file is used to adjust the timestamps of the next file: if the duration is incorrect (because it was computed using the bit-rate or because the file is truncated, for example), it can cause artifacts.” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
- Inspect each item’s container duration and the end times of its audio and video streams.
- Look for truncated files, unreliable duration metadata, or audio and video streams that end at different times.
- If you know a file’s duration more accurately than its stored value, the concat script’s
durationdirective can override it. Use a measured or otherwise reliable value: a guess can shift every later file and make the timeline worse. - If audio and video genuinely end at different times, address that mismatch during preparation instead of blindly forcing a duration.
Timestamp adjustment applies across streams, so unequal audio and video lengths can cause gaps or other boundary artifacts even when the playlist appears correctly ordered.

Choose the concat method that fits your files
The concat demuxer is suitable when the files already have the same streams, codecs, and time bases and a stream-copy-style workflow is appropriate. It relies on reported file durations when stitching timestamps. The concat filter is the better route when re-encoding is needed. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media describes these use cases.

There is no single command that reliably fixes every playlist. Choose based on input compatibility, whether re-encoding is acceptable, duration accuracy, and whether you can verify the audio and video boundaries.

Validate the YouTube encoder and network separately
Once the local timeline is sound, check the output against YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), supported live video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the value for your actual output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds.
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps.
- YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Check its streaming tips for operational guidance.
- Test with representative audio and motion, inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live.
These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a cure for incorrect concat durations or incompatible inputs.

What is needed to diagnose one stream precisely
The exact cause cannot be selected confidently without the FFmpeg version and build, full command, concat playlist, probe output for each file, and relevant FFmpeg log excerpt. Those details distinguish inaccurate duration metadata, mismatched stream layouts or time bases, genuine audio/video length differences, and an ingest or network issue.
