If the error persists, check that the key, server URL, application path, and selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol all belong together. A stale or mismatched key is the first thing to rule out; a TLS or network failure is a different problem.
Refresh the YouTube stream key first
- Open the intended stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live → Stream (labels can vary) and select the scheduled or current broadcast you want FFmpeg to send to. A key copied from another stream may not match the selected destination. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s routing and acceptance credential. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains managing it.
- Copy the current key from Live Control Room. If its validity is uncertain, reset or create a key there, then replace the old value everywhere FFmpeg or its wrapper gets the destination. YouTube’s first recommended remedy for a third-party encoder startup problem is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide gives that instruction.
- Check who can reset it. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset stream keys; editors and viewers cannot. If you lack permission, ask an owner or manager to refresh it.
- Restart the encoder and check Live Control Room. Look for a preview and stream-health status. If YouTube receives a feed, the problem may be resolved; if not, continue through the destination and connection checks below.
Treat the key like a password. Don’t paste it into public posts, screenshots, examples, or unredacted support logs.
Verify how FFmpeg receives the destination
YouTube provides a server URL and stream key. Depending on the encoder configuration, these may be separate fields or combined into a publishing URL. FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation describes the URL in terms of a server, application, and playpath; YouTube’s Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes an ingestion address and stream name. Compare each component with the values for the selected stream instead of moving the key between URL parts by guesswork. Follow the fields and format expected by your encoder setup. Keep the actual key out of shell history where possible: use a protected configuration file or another suitable local secret-handling method. An environment variable alone does not guarantee that a secret is hidden from process listings or logs.
Check RTMP versus RTMPS separately from the key
Use the protocol and endpoint specified for the selected stream. RTMP and RTMPS destinations are not interchangeable just because the key is correct. Google recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content and documents YouTube RTMPS ingestion on port 443. Its guide also notes that the correct server hostname is needed for SNI authentication; the documented protocol must be rtmps. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes the endpoint, application name, port, TLS, and common connection failures.

- For RTMPS, confirm the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme and the hostname and application path match the current YouTube settings. - Confirm the connection reaches port 443 and that TLS is being used with the correct hostname.
- An SSL certificate error can result from attempting TLS against an RTMP endpoint. A timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Diagnose these as transport or endpoint problems, not proof that the key itself is invalid.
- Do not change the protocol while retaining the other protocol’s URL or path.
If the key and endpoint look right
- Read the complete FFmpeg stderr output. Record the actual error rather than relying on a shorthand description such as “invalid key.” A TLS handshake failure, timeout, and rejected credential point to different parts of the setup.
- Check whether YouTube receives a preview. If it does not, confirm the encoder is using the intended stream’s current server URL and key. YouTube also recommends checking stream health and the outbound connection when the feed is problematic. Its troubleshooting guide covers encoder and network checks.
- Check your installed FFmpeg build and protocol support. Build options and package versions vary by Linux distribution; the guidance here does not establish behavior for a particular distribution. Compare your installed version and configuration with the protocol you intend to use, then consult the package or build documentation for that installation.
- Share diagnostic details safely if you need help. Provide the redacted FFmpeg command, complete error output, FFmpeg version and configuration, whether you selected RTMP or RTMPS, and whether Live Control Room receives a preview. Remove the stream key and any other credentials.
Bitrate, resolution, and keyframe settings affect stream quality and health, but changing them is not the first fix for a credential rejection. If the feed connects but YouTube reports a quality or health issue, use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the chosen codec and output settings.
