H.264, H.265, and AV1 all compress video, but they make different trade-offs. H.264 is a dependable choice when playback compatibility matters most. H.265 and AV1 are newer designs intended to compress video more efficiently, which can help reduce data use or file size at a comparable quality—but the result depends on the content, encoder, settings, and playback device. There is no single best codec for every game capture, stream, or viewer.

What a video codec does—and what it doesn’t

A codec is the method used to encode and decode video picture data. A container packages video and audio streams with metadata. MP4 and WebM are containers, not codecs: an MP4 file does not, by its extension alone, tell you whether its video is H.264, H.265, or another codec.

Successful playback depends on the combination of codec, profile, bit depth, container, player, operating system, and available software or hardware decoding. A file can therefore be packaged in a familiar container and still fail on a particular device.

In lossy video compression, the encoder aims to represent the source using less data, so the decoded result may not preserve every original sample exactly. A typical approach predicts picture areas from other areas in the same frame or from earlier or later frames, then encodes information about the difference. The standard defines the bitstream and how a compliant decoder reconstructs it; it does not prescribe one encoder’s speed, quality, or optimization choices.

H.264, H.265, and AV1 at a glance

Codec Also called and standard Why choose it Trade-offs
H.264 AVC; ITU-T H.264 / ISO/IEC 14496-10 Broad compatibility across many playback environments makes it a practical delivery format and fallback. Newer codecs may compress more efficiently in particular tests, but there is no fixed saving that applies to every video.
H.265 HEVC; ITU-T H.265 / ISO/IEC 23008-2 Designed for higher compression efficiency across uses including streaming, communication, storage, and broadcasting. Playback support varies with device, profile, software, and hardware. Encoding and licensing circumstances may also affect a workflow.
AV1 AOMedia Video 1; Alliance for Open Media An open specification developed under AOMedia’s royalty-free patent policy, intended for efficient, high-quality internet video, including high-resolution delivery. Encoding complexity, decoder support, and hardware acceleration vary. AOMedia’s policy description is not a legal opinion that every implementation or use is free of all third-party claims.

ITU’s H.264 recommendation, cited here as the August 2024 edition, covers use cases such as video conferencing, storage media, television broadcasting, internet streaming, and communications: ITU-T H.264. ITU lists H.265 version 11 as January 2026 and describes it as responding to demand for higher compression across streaming and other applications: ITU-T H.265.

AOMedia provides AV1 bitstream, decoding-process, and media-format binding specifications through its AV1 specification portal. Its AV1 features page describes the codec’s intended uses and the organization’s royalty-free patent policy.

How to compare quality, file size, and speed

Claims that one codec is always a fixed percentage smaller or “twice as good” are misleading without test conditions. Compression results vary with the source footage, encoder and version, preset, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, quality target, and playback conditions.

  • Equal bitrate: Hold the data rate constant and compare the resulting picture quality. This answers which output looks better at the same rate.
  • Equal quality: Set a defined quality target and compare the data each codec needs to reach it. This helps estimate file-size or bandwidth differences.
  • Encoding time and compute: Measure how long the chosen encoder and settings take on the hardware you will use. A more complex encoding process may take longer.
  • Decoding performance: Check playback on the actual target devices. Support and hardware acceleration can differ even when a standard has a compliant decoder.

The available sources do not establish a current, controlled, same-content comparison that supports one expected H.264-versus-H.265-versus-AV1 bitrate or file-size saving. AOMedia’s feature page displays a 30% compression claim attributed to a Bitmovin multi-codec DASH dataset, but that figure should not be treated as a general guarantee without the study’s full conditions. Meta’s 2018 engineering account said AV1 required longer encoding times than then-current alternatives; that is a dated observation, not a universal ranking of current encoders.

Which codec should you use?

Choose H.264 when reach and predictable playback matter

For game clips, recordings, or uploads that must play on a broad and uncertain mix of devices, H.264 is often a sensible default because it is widely supported. It is also useful as a fallback when a newer codec is not supported by a viewer’s software or hardware.

Consider H.265 when your delivery targets support it

H.265 is worth evaluating when reducing data use or storage is important and you know the destination devices, apps, and playback path can decode the selected profile. Test representative footage at your intended resolution and quality target before adopting it as your only delivery version.

Consider AV1 when its support and workflow fit

AV1 may suit internet or high-resolution delivery where the target browsers, devices, and services support it and your encoder’s output meets your needs. Check encoding time as well as output size and quality; the codec name alone does not establish how quickly a particular system will encode or decode a file.

For creators and publishers, decide by the whole workflow

  • Identify where the video will be played, including older phones, consoles, browsers, editing apps, and TVs if relevant.
  • Set a quality target and test representative footage, including fast motion, detailed textures, and dark scenes.
  • Compare outputs at equal bitrate or equal quality, and record the encoder, version, preset, resolution, frame rate, and bit depth.
  • Use a compatible fallback when audience reach matters more than minimizing bandwidth.
  • For web delivery, verify the exact codec, profile, container, and browser/device support rather than relying on a general codec-support chart. Compatibility information can change; MDN’s web video codec guide describes platform-specific caveats. Meta’s 2024 account discusses H.264’s broad hardware and application support and its reasons for choosing AV1 for real-time communication: Meta Engineering’s 2024 AV1 article.

Why a video may not play

When playback fails, the extension is only a starting clue. Check the media details in a player or file-inspection tool and confirm the actual video codec and profile, bit depth, container, and audio codec. Then check whether the player and operating system support that combination and whether playback is using software decoding or a supported hardware path.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Unsupported codec or profile: Try a player or device that supports the exact format, or make a compatible export such as H.264 for a broader range of playback targets.
  • Container and codec mismatch: Confirm the streams inside the file. Renaming an extension does not convert the underlying video.
  • Outdated application or operating system: Check for a supported player or platform update, while verifying that the target device can decode the format.
  • Hardware decoding issue: If the player offers a software-decoding option, try it as a diagnostic. Software decoding may use more processing power; this test does not prove that new hardware is required.
  • Web playback discrepancy: Test in the specific browsers and device generations your audience uses. Browser support can depend on platform and hardware, not only browser version.

Codec choice for YouTube live and prerecorded video

Codec selection concerns how video is encoded and decoded; it does not by itself keep a YouTube channel live. If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not have to remain on. See StreamNeo for details.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
