FFXIV Error 2002 means the game could not establish or maintain the lobby-server connection needed to log you into a World or login queue. It does not automatically mean your installation is broken. Square Enix associates the error with both login congestion and connection failures involving your network, router, ISP, firewall, or security software.
Check the official FFXIV World Status page and Lodestone news first. If Error 2002 is widespread or an official incident is listed, waiting is usually the right fix. If it affects only you, isolate the problem with the platform and network steps below.

What FFXIV Error 2002 means
The lobby server handles the connection between the FFXIV client and the login process. Error 2002 appears when that connection cannot be established or is interrupted while you are selecting a character, connecting to a Data Center, or waiting in a login queue.
There are two broad explanations:
- Congestion: Square Enix says the error can occur when login traffic is unusually high or a logical Data Center’s login queue reaches capacity.
- A connection failure: An unstable Wi-Fi connection, packet loss, router problem, ISP filtering, firewall, VPN, antivirus, or other background software can interrupt communication with the lobby server.
Square Enix’s explanation of the congestion-related error is available in its Lodestone notice. Its broader connection troubleshooting is covered in the official support guidance.

Error 2002 is a login and connectivity problem, not an indication that your character data has been deleted. Reinstalling the game is therefore not the best first step.
First, check whether FFXIV is congested or undergoing maintenance
- Open the FFXIV Server Status page.
- Check the relevant physical and logical Data Center and World.
- Read current Lodestone maintenance notices and news.
- Look for reports from other players, but treat unofficial reports as clues rather than confirmation.
An “Online” World does not prove that every player’s route to the lobby server is working. The status page reports service status, not the condition of every ISP or regional route. Conversely, simultaneous Error 2002 reports during a major patch, expansion, free login campaign, or peak period strongly suggest broader congestion or service trouble.
If Square Enix has posted an incident or maintenance notice, repeated restarts will not increase login-server capacity. Wait for the official update and try again later.
If Error 2002 happened in a login queue
Reconnect promptly. Square Enix says the lobby server may preserve your queue position for roughly one minute after an Error 2002 disconnect. This is not a guaranteed, exact 60-second grace period.
- Dismiss the error.
- Start the login process again immediately.
- Select the same Data Center and character.
- Avoid changing network settings or repeatedly rebooting during that initial reconnection attempt.
If you cancel login and start over later, Square Enix says you can lose your place in the queue. A short Error 2002 disconnect is different: reconnecting quickly may allow the lobby server to retain your position, while waiting too long may put you back at the end.
Fix FFXIV Error 2002 in the safest order
1. Fully restart the game and device
Exit FFXIV and its launcher completely rather than leaving the game suspended. Restart the PC or console, then try again. This clears a temporary client, platform, or network-session problem without changing advanced settings.
2. Restart the modem and router
Power off the modem and router, allow them to shut down, and restart them before launching FFXIV again. For persistent connection faults, Square Enix’s support guidance recommends powering off communication equipment for 30 minutes to one hour. A normal restart is a reasonable first test; reserve the longer shutdown for a problem that continues.

3. Use Ethernet if possible
Connect the PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet. Square Enix recommends wired networking over Wi-Fi for connection stability. Ethernet can remove wireless interference, weak signal, and local Wi-Fi packet loss from the list of possible causes.
It cannot fix a Square Enix outage, an overloaded lobby server, a bad ISP route, or a failing modem. If the error remains on a wired connection, continue testing rather than assuming the cable failed.
4. Close VPNs, proxies, overlays, and heavy network applications
Temporarily close software that can filter or reroute traffic:
- VPN and proxy clients
- Gaming network optimizers
- Download clients
- Streaming and cloud-sync applications
- Overlay tools
- Other game launchers
- Third-party security and web-filtering utilities
On Windows, Square Enix also suggests a clean-boot-style test: disable nonessential startup applications in Task Manager, restart the PC, and test FFXIV. A clean boot is a diagnostic step, not a permanent requirement for playing.
5. Check firewall and security software
Add the official FFXIV launcher and game applications to your firewall’s allowed-app list, then restart the game. If the problem persists, you can temporarily disable a third-party antivirus firewall, VPN, web filter, or “safe browsing” feature to test whether it is interfering.
Re-enable protection immediately after the test. Do not leave Windows Security or antivirus protection disabled permanently. If Error 2002 disappears only when security software is disabled, create an appropriate allow rule instead of repeating the unsafe workaround.
6. Check ISP-level security services
Some internet providers enable parental controls, malware filtering, gaming protection, application blocking, DNS filtering, or traffic-management features at the account or router level. Ask your ISP whether any such service is active and whether it permits FFXIV.

You can also ask whether the connection uses CGNAT or unusual NAT restrictions. CGNAT does not automatically cause Error 2002, so treat it as a possible network detail rather than a diagnosis.

Connect the PC or console to a mobile hotspot if your data plan and signal allow it. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed permanent solution.
- Works on the hotspot but not home internet: the home router, ISP, filtering, DNS resolution, or route is more likely involved.
- Fails on both connections: congestion, a device or platform problem, an account issue, or a regional service problem becomes more likely.
- One Data Center works while another fails: a Data Center-specific issue or regional routing problem is possible.
These are troubleshooting inferences, not Square Enix’s formal diagnostic algorithm.
8. Test the router path carefully
Square Enix recommends checking router security features and, for diagnosis, temporarily removing routers or hubs from the connection path. Do this only if you understand your ISP’s requirements and can connect safely. A direct modem connection may expose the device more directly to the internet, and some ISPs require authentication or special settings.
Do not bypass the router firewall permanently. Port forwarding should be a last-resort diagnostic step, not a universal Error 2002 fix.

Windows-specific troubleshooting
For Windows, follow this order:
- Check Lodestone status and notices.
- Restart FFXIV, the PC, modem, and router.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet.
- Allow the launcher and game through the firewall.
- Temporarily test without VPN, proxy, antivirus web filtering, and overlays.
- Close background applications or perform a clean-boot diagnostic.
- Test a mobile hotspot.
- Ask your ISP about filtering, NAT, and routing.
- Only then investigate router settings or ports.
Square Enix lists these TCP ranges for FFXIV connectivity on Windows:
- TCP
54992–54994 - TCP
55006–55007 - TCP
55021–55040
These values come from Square Enix’s Windows connection guidance. Router interfaces vary, and forwarding ports can increase exposure. Do not forward them by default or assume that port forwarding will fix a congested service.

The reviewed official guidance does not establish running the game as administrator, deleting configuration files, editing the registry, changing DNS, or reinstalling as universal first-line fixes. Consider reinstalling only later if there is separate evidence of launcher or installation corruption.
PS4 and PS5 troubleshooting
- From the Home screen, open Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.
- Install the latest PlayStation system update.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Test FFXIV over Ethernet if possible.
- Review router security and ISP filtering.
- If the error occurs after rest mode or suspension, review the console’s Power Save Settings and test after fully restarting the game.
These steps follow Square Enix’s PlayStation connection guidance and its recommendation to review Power Save Settings. Square Enix lists the following PlayStation connectivity values:
- UDP
55296–55551 - TCP
80,8080, and443 - TCP
55296–55551
These are official support values, not a recommendation to forward every port. Router-specific forwarding can create security risks and should be considered only after simpler network tests isolate the router as a likely cause.
Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting
The available Square Enix material provides detailed Windows and PlayStation procedures but not an equivalent Xbox-specific Error 2002 menu path. Do not apply PlayStation instructions to Xbox by assumption.
For Xbox, use the same diagnostic logic:
- Check the Lodestone status page and Xbox network-service status.
- Fully quit FFXIV instead of relying only on a suspended game state.
- Restart the console, modem, and router.
- Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
- Review NAT and multiplayer connectivity in the console’s network settings.
- Temporarily remove VPNs, DNS filters, and router-level security services.
- Test another connection, such as a mobile hotspot, if practical.
If the error follows the Xbox across networks while official services appear normal, contact Square Enix Support rather than guessing at PlayStation-only settings.

- Select the character.
- Open the subcommand menu.
- Select Visit Another World Server.
The destination must be a less-populated World in the same Data Center and may still have a queue. World Visit also has restrictions: you can continue much of the main scenario and use Duty Finder, but some World-specific features are unavailable. See the official World Visit guide.

Do not move your character or create a new character merely to bypass a temporary Error 2002.
Should you use a VPN or change DNS?
VPN
A VPN can change your route and may help if FFXIV works on another network but not through your normal ISP. It can also add latency, packet loss, authentication problems, and another point of failure. Treat it as an optional diagnostic or last-resort workaround, not an official Error 2002 fix.
Do not subscribe to a VPN solely for this error until a different network has shown that routing is plausibly involved.

DNS
Changing DNS is not a guaranteed solution. It may help when name resolution is specifically failing, but it will not resolve a full login queue, server congestion, packet loss, or a Square Enix outage. The official guidance reviewed here does not identify a particular public DNS provider as a standard Error 2002 fix.
What not to do
- Do not spam retries during a confirmed incident. Repeated attempts do not add server capacity and can make it harder to reclaim a queue position.
- Do not cancel a queue unnecessarily. Canceling login can cause you to lose your place when you log in again.
- Do not disable antivirus permanently. Use a temporary test and then create a proper allow rule.
- Do not forward ports by default. It is router-specific and can increase security exposure.
- Do not assume Ethernet fixes everything. It only removes Wi-Fi as one possible cause.
- Do not reinstall first. Error 2002 is often caused outside the game files.
- Do not treat historical launch limits or peak hours as current universal values. Congestion changes with events, patches, region, and Data Center.

Free Trial queues and queue expectations
Square Enix says full-version players are prioritized when a login queue exists, so Free Trial players may wait longer. Error 2002 does not provide a reliable time-based estimate for when the queue will clear. Avoid promises such as “wait exactly 10 minutes”; congestion can change from one period to another.
When to contact Square Enix Support
Contact Square Enix Support when the error persists across restarts, wired and wireless connections, and another network, particularly if no official incident is listed.
Include:
- The exact error text and code
- Your platform and launcher type
- Your region, physical Data Center, logical Data Center, and World
- The date and approximate time, including time zone
- Whether other players or devices are affected
- Whether you were using Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Whether a mobile hotspot worked
- Firewall, VPN, router, or security changes you tested
- Screenshots and connection details if requested
This information helps distinguish a broad login problem from a device, home-network, ISP, or account-specific failure.
