A failure before the game opens calls for different checks than a black screen after launch or a freeze during play. These symptoms alone do not identify a cause, and there is no established universal fix for FIFA 23.
First, identify the platform and when FIFA 23 fails
Choose the branch that matches your setup and symptom. Note whether the problem happens before launch, while the game is starting, after a menu appears, or during a match. If the screen is black, check whether you can still hear sound, use menu controls, or see the game on another display; that helps distinguish a display problem from a full crash.
- PC using the EA app: try the repair and overlay checks below.
- PC with a black screen or graphics issue: check updates, requirements, graphics settings, and display output.
- DirectX or missing-library message: use the specific runtime branch rather than reinstalling DirectX by default.
- Anti-cheat error: use anti-cheat troubleshooting only if that message appears.
- PlayStation or Xbox: start with system updates and basic restart steps.
FIFA 23 not launching on PC through the EA app
Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped. EA’s general PC launch guidance recommends repairing game files and testing with the EA app in-game overlay disabled; it does not establish that either is the cause of a particular FIFA 23 failure.
- Restart the game and EA app. Close the game and app, then reopen the app and try launching again.
- Close overlays and background applications. Temporarily disable the EA app in-game overlay and close other overlays or unnecessary background programs. EA notes that the overlay can sometimes contribute to crashes.
- Repair the game. In the EA app, open Library, select FIFA 23, open its game-management menu, and choose Repair. Let the check finish before launching again.
- If the app is stuck preparing the game, clear the EA app cache. EA also recommends checking Windows and graphics-driver updates in this situation.
- Try a clean boot if the issue persists. This can help determine whether another startup application or service is interfering. Re-enable any settings or applications you changed once you have finished testing.
If FIFA 23 still crashes or freezes, EA’s broader PC guidance includes reinstalling the game and EA app, and testing a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. These are troubleshooting attempts, not guaranteed fixes. Try the less disruptive checks first.

FIFA 23 black screen or graphics problem on PC
A black screen does not by itself prove the game has crashed. Check whether audio continues, whether controls still respond, and whether the image appears on another connected display. Those observations can help narrow down whether the game is running without a visible picture.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. Restart the PC after installing available updates.
- Check the minimum requirements. If the PC is near the minimum, reduce graphics settings and test again.
- On a laptop, select the dedicated GPU. Confirm the game is using the discrete graphics processor rather than integrated graphics, if the laptop has both.
- Test display connections and outputs. If available, try another display or output to check whether the issue is limited to one screen path.
EA’s cited graphics guidance is general PC troubleshooting; it does not identify a FIFA 23-specific black-screen cause or promise a display fix.

DirectX or missing-library error
Use this branch only when the error names DirectX or reports a missing library. EA recommends checking for Windows updates and installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime when a required library is missing. A DirectX reinstall is not a general first step for every launch failure.
Anti-cheat error
Only troubleshoot anti-cheat when FIFA 23 displays an anti-cheat error. EA says, “EA Javelin anticheat errors usually happen because of corrupted files or conflicting background software.” That is guidance for Javelin-related errors, not proof that anti-cheat caused an unrelated crash or that every FIFA 23 failure involves Javelin.

EA’s anti-cheat guidance also discusses CPU errors, microcode updates, and returning BIOS power settings to manufacturer-recommended values in some cases. Avoid changing BIOS settings or updating firmware as a general fix; follow that branch only when the error and EA’s instructions match your situation.
FIFA 23 crashing or freezing on console
For PlayStation or Xbox, EA’s general crash-and-freeze guidance recommends checking that system software is current, disconnecting attached USB devices, restarting, and power cycling the console. If the problem continues, reinstalling the game is a later step. These are general console troubleshooting measures, not a verified FIFA 23-specific black-screen sequence.

When to collect diagnostics or contact support
If basic steps do not resolve a PC issue, check the game’s minimum requirements and confirm that the graphics driver is current. EA recommends using DxDiag to collect system information for support or a forum post. Before escalating, write down:

- When the failure occurs: before launch, during startup, after a menu, or during play.
- The exact error text, if one appears, especially any DirectX or anti-cheat wording.
- Whether sound or controls continue during a black screen, and what repair or update steps you have tried.
