FFXIV Error 2002 can happen when login services are congested or when a network interruption breaks the connection; the error alone does not prove your router is at fault. First check the status of the World you are trying to reach. If Square Enix reports congestion, wait before retrying. If service status looks normal or the problem keeps returning, work through the connection checks below.
1. Check official World Status and Lodestone notices
Before changing settings, check the World Status page for the World you were trying to access, then look for current regional incident announcements on The Lodestone. Square Enix support recommends checking the affected World’s status; a service-side incident is not something a local router adjustment can solve. Status and announcements can change, so use the current notices rather than assuming an older incident still applies.

2. Wait and retry if login congestion is reported
When Error 2002 occurs during login congestion, Square Enix’s guidance is to wait a while before trying again. Its 2024 Dawntrail launch notice used that advice specifically for congestion; it does not establish that repeatedly relaunching the game clears the error. If the login service is busy, changing local network settings will not remove the server-side queue.
3. If you are in a queue, do not cancel without a reason
Square Enix’s Dawntrail launch notice said a queue could continue even when its displayed count appeared stalled, and that canceling and rejoining would send a player to the back. Treat that as guidance about the queue behavior described in that launch-era notice, not a guarantee for every later incident. If you are already waiting and have no reason to leave, keeping your place is the safer choice.

4. Reconnect promptly if you drop out of a queue
In its 2024 Dawntrail notice, Square Enix said the lobby could hold a disconnected player’s place for roughly a minute, and that reconnecting quickly might restore it. That was an approximate, notice-specific window—not a promise that your position will always be preserved. If you are disconnected, retry promptly rather than assuming you can return to the same spot later.
5. Try wired Ethernet if you are using Wi-Fi
If your gaming device supports it, connect it to the router with Ethernet and try again. Square Enix recommends a wired connection where possible to improve stability. This is a useful diagnostic for a potentially unstable Wi-Fi link, but it cannot clear login congestion or repair a fault elsewhere along the route to Square Enix’s servers.

6. Restart communication equipment if the error persists
Square Enix support recommends restarting communication equipment. Its FAQ describes powering the equipment off for 30 minutes to an hour, an unusually long interruption compared with a quick reboot. Follow the instructions for your own modem and router, and plan for the downtime; do not treat that duration as a universal requirement for every device or every Error 2002 case.
7. Check router or modem firmware and settings
Square Enix also advises checking communication-equipment firmware and router settings. Use the manufacturer’s documentation or support guidance for your specific model, and avoid changing settings you do not understand. The available official guidance does not establish port forwarding or switching to a particular DNS provider as a general fix for this error.

8. Check security software without turning off protection
Security programs and firewalls can interfere with a game connection. Review your security software’s game-specific allow/block records and follow its official instructions to correct a mistaken block, if one is present. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut.
9. Close other running applications and retry
Close applications that may be interfering with the connection, then make another login attempt. Square Enix includes this in its support guidance, but it is a low-risk diagnostic step—not a confirmed fix for every lobby-server error.

10. Escalate persistent or region-specific failures
If other online services work but one FFXIV region or Data Center repeatedly fails, check current Square Enix notices and contact Square Enix Support. If the issue persists, contact your internet service provider as well. Square Enix has documented investigations in which it found no server-side fault but identified degraded connection quality at points along internet pathways, and asked affected customers to contact their provider. Note the affected Data Center, when failures occur, and whether other devices or services on the same connection are affected; these details help distinguish a game-service incident from a local or route-specific problem.

What Error 2002 does—and does not—tell you
Square Enix has associated Error 2002 with login congestion as well as cases where packet loss or unstable connectivity interrupts a connection. The code by itself does not identify which cause applies, and it does not prove that your router is defective. Use the service-status check first, then choose connection troubleshooting based on what else is failing.

Launch-era numbers are not current capacity guidance. Square Enix’s 2024 Dawntrail notice described a stated maximum capacity roughly 50% higher than at the Endwalker launch; in 2021, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida cited 17,000 total players waiting to log in per logical data center as a historical threshold. Neither figure establishes today’s queue limit or capacity.
