A frame.dll error is fixed by restoring the program that owns the file—not by downloading a random DLL. frame.dll is not a unique Windows component name: one legacy reference associates it with Microsoft MSDN Disc 0123, while Pro-face WinGP uses a different file named rootFrame.dll. Identify the application, executable path, Windows version, and exact message first. Then reinstall or repair that application, repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC when appropriate, and inspect dependencies only if the normal repair fails.
What a frame.dll error actually means
Windows loads dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) on behalf of applications. When an application expects a library called frame.dll and Windows cannot load the required file or one of its dependencies, the application may refuse to start. The visible message can say that the file was not found, that a procedure or entry point is missing, that the file is not designed for Windows, or that the DLL is the faulting module in a crash.

The filename alone does not identify a single product. A legacy third-party reference links frame.dll with Microsoft’s MSDN Disc 0123, but that does not make every copy of the file a Windows component. Pro-face documentation discusses rootFrame.dll in the WinGP runtime; that is a different filename and a product-specific repair path. Treat the application and its installation location as the source of truth.
Record the error before changing anything
Write down the complete dialog text or take a screenshot. The wording determines whether you are dealing with a missing file, a damaged installation, an incompatible module, or a crash after loading. Also record:

Use the error wording to choose a repair path
| What you see | Most likely scope | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “frame.dll was not found” or “cannot find frame.dll” | The owning application is missing a file, or the file is in the wrong installation directory. | Repair or reinstall that application from its original, official source. |
| “The procedure entry point could not be located” | The DLL exists but is the wrong build for the application, or an exported function is missing. | Restore the application’s matching package; do not substitute a similarly named download. |
| “The file is not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image” | The file or a dependency may be damaged or built for an incompatible architecture or operating system. | Reinstall the application, then repair Windows files if other programs show corruption symptoms. |
The application starts and then crashes, with frame.dll named as the faulting module |
A runtime dependency, application component, or Windows file may be failing after launch. | Reinstall/update the application, apply Windows updates, and inspect dependencies if the crash remains. |
The message names rootFrame.dll in Pro-face WinGP |
The WinGP runtime is damaged or missing its product-specific file. | Reinstall WinGP as directed by the Pro-face GP-Pro EX documentation. |
Fix frame.dll step by step
1. Repair or reinstall the affected application
Use the same official source that originally supplied the program. A package from the Microsoft Store should be repaired or reinstalled through the Store; software installed from a vendor’s installer should be downloaded again from that vendor’s official support or account page. This restores the complete, matching set of files instead of copying one DLL in isolation.
- Close the affected application and its launcher. In Task Manager, end a process only when you recognize it as belonging to that program.
- Open the application’s own repair or modify option if its installer provides one. A repair keeps the existing installation while replacing damaged components.
- If repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application using Windows’ installed-app controls or the application’s uninstaller.
- Restart Windows, then install the current package from the original source. Avoid repackaged installers and DLL-download pages.
- Launch the program and reproduce the original action. If it now starts, the missing or mismatched component belonged to that installation.
Microsoft lists reinstalling an application from the Microsoft Store or from the source where it was first installed as a workaround for app-start failures. Reinstallation is also the appropriate first response when an entry-point error indicates that a file from another release has been mixed into the program directory.

If the failing software is Pro-face WinGP or a GP-Pro EX runtime and the message names rootFrame.dll, do not replace it with a file called frame.dll. The Pro-face manual states that a damaged or absent rootFrame.dll requires reinstalling WinGP. Use the WinGP installer or recovery media supplied for your licensed installation, complete the reinstall, restart Windows, and test the project again.

3. Apply Windows and application updates
After reinstalling the application, restart the computer and install pending Windows updates. Also apply updates offered by the affected application’s official updater. Microsoft’s documented workaround for certain app-start failures includes retrying the app, reinstalling it, and running Windows Update. An update can replace a damaged Windows component or bring the application and its runtime dependencies back to compatible versions.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install the updates offered for your edition, and restart when requested.
- Open the application’s official updater, if it has one, and install its available updates.
- Try the same operation that produced the DLL message.
4. Repair Windows system files with DISM, then SFC
Use this step when Windows corruption is plausible—for example, several unrelated applications report missing or damaged system components, or the application still fails after a clean reinstall. Microsoft documents running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first and System File Checker (SFC) second. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as its source.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. The process can appear to pause at a percentage while it works; do not close the window merely because progress is slow.

sfc /scannow
Allow SFC to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application again. Running SFC before DISM can leave it without a healthy component source, so keep the documented order. If either command reports that it could not complete, retain the exact message; it is useful evidence for the next diagnostic step rather than a reason to download a replacement DLL.

5. Check the installation path and file identity
If the message returns, inspect the path named by the error or by the application’s diagnostics. A legitimate application DLL normally resides in that application’s installation directory or in a Windows component location appropriate to the software. A copy sitting in an unrelated download folder, a temporary directory, or a different program’s folder is not automatically safe just because the filename matches.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab for a product name and publisher.
- Use the Digital Signatures tab when one is present; verify that the signature is valid and belongs to the expected software publisher.
- Compare the file’s location with the executable that requested it. A DLL copied from another application’s directory can create version and entry-point mismatches.
- Record the file version and hash if the publisher’s support instructions provide a value to compare. A hash is useful only when compared with an authoritative value for that exact build.
If you cannot establish the publisher, expected path, and matching build, leave the file alone and return to an official application repair. Do not rename random files to make an error disappear.
6. Inspect dependencies when normal repair does not resolve the error
When reinstalling the application, updating Windows, and repairing system files do not help, the failure may be a missing or invalid dependency rather than frame.dll itself. Microsoft describes Dependency Walker as a diagnostic tool that can identify missing or invalid DLLs, import/export mismatches, circular dependencies, and modules built for another operating system.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the affected application’s executable in Dependency Walker or the dependency-analysis tool supplied by your support team.
- Look for modules marked missing, invalid, or incompatible, and note the exact file names and paths.
- Pay attention to import/export errors: an entry-point failure means the application requested a function that the loaded module does not provide.
- Check whether a module is built for a different operating system or architecture than the application expects.
- Use those findings to repair the owning application or obtain the correct runtime from its official source. Do not copy an arbitrary module merely because the diagnostic list contains its name.
Dependency inspection has diagnostic value even when it does not repair anything itself: it can distinguish a genuinely absent file from a wrong-version file and can reveal a second module that is the real cause of the startup failure.

What not to do
Do not use a random DLL-download website
Two files with the same name can be different builds for different products. A download site may not identify the original publisher, signing status, architecture, or dependency set. Copying such a file into C:WindowsSystem32 or an application’s directory can replace a compatible module with an incompatible one and make diagnosis harder. It can also introduce an untrusted executable component.
Do not use registry cleaners as a first-line fix
A registry cleaner cannot recreate the correct application package or repair a missing dependency. Registry changes can create new startup problems while leaving the DLL mismatch untouched. Prefer a signed package repair, Windows component repair, or evidence from dependency analysis.
Do not replace rootFrame.dll with frame.dll
The similar names are not interchangeable. The Pro-face WinGP case concerns rootFrame.dll and has its own reinstall procedure. Treating the names as aliases can leave the runtime incomplete.

Choosing the safest remedy
| Remedy | Source authority | Scope | Risk | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repair or reinstall the affected application | Official application or Microsoft Store source | One application and its packaged dependencies | Low when the original source is used; settings or local data may be affected by uninstalling | High: confirms whether the application’s package was incomplete or mismatched |
Reinstall WinGP for a rootFrame.dll error |
Pro-face product documentation and installer | WinGP runtime | Low when the licensed installer is used | High for this product-specific error |
| DISM followed by SFC | Microsoft Windows servicing tools | Windows image and protected system files | Generally limited to Windows component repair, but commands require administrator rights | Medium to high when multiple applications show system-file corruption |
| Dependency analysis | Microsoft-described diagnostic method | One executable and its loaded modules | Low if used for inspection only; it does not make an unknown DLL trustworthy | High for missing modules, import/export mismatches, circular dependencies, and incompatible builds |
| Copying a DLL from an unrelated website | Third-party and often unverified | One file, with uncertain effects on the application or Windows | High: version, publisher, signature, and dependencies may not match | Low: it obscures which component actually failed |
When the error still appears
If the application still fails after its official reinstall, Windows Update, and the DISM/SFC sequence, preserve the exact error text and the paths you recorded. Note whether the failure occurs for every user account or only one, whether other applications load normally, and which module appears as the faulting component in the crash details. Give that information to the application’s official support team or your organization’s administrator. The distinction matters: a single application’s failure points toward its package or dependencies, while several unrelated failures increase the likelihood of Windows corruption or a broader compatibility problem.
Do not keep cycling through different downloaded copies of frame.dll. At this stage, the useful next step is evidence—publisher and signature details, dependency-analysis results, and the outcome of the documented repair commands—not another unverified replacement.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Identify the application, executable path, Windows version, and exact error wording.
- Confirm whether the message says
frame.dllor the separate Pro-face filerootFrame.dll. - Repair or reinstall the affected application from its original official source.
- For WinGP, reinstall WinGP when
rootFrame.dllis damaged or absent. - Restart, run Windows Update, and update the application through its official updater.
- From an elevated Command Prompt, run DISM first and then
sfc /scannow. - Verify a DLL’s publisher, location, digital signature, and hash before considering any manual replacement.
- Use dependency analysis to find missing, invalid, mismatched, circular, or incompatible modules when ordinary repair fails.
- Avoid random DLL downloads and registry cleaners as first-line solutions.
