The best way to fix frame-rate problems in Gray Zone Warfare is to identify whether you have low average FPS, sudden drops, traversal stutter, or network lag before changing settings. Start by updating the game and GPU driver, confirming that Windows uses the dedicated GPU, selecting the correct upscaler, lowering resolution or upscaling quality, and testing frame generation separately. Then check CPU/GPU usage, RAM, VRAM, storage, overlays, overclocks, and the current patch.
The game has had documented shader-compilation, asset-streaming, rendering, and frame-generation performance issues. Some hitches require developer fixes, so a sudden problem after an update is not automatically evidence that your hardware has failed.

First, identify the problem
Different symptoms require different fixes. Use this quick diagnosis before lowering every setting to Low:
| Symptom | Likely causes | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS everywhere | GPU, CPU, resolution, VRAM, thermals, or settings limit | Check GPU utilization, then lower resolution or upscaling quality |
| Sudden FPS drops | Combat effects, foliage, shadows, AI, view distance, or a CPU limit | Reduce effects, shadows, foliage, and view-distance settings |
| Brief hitches when entering areas | Shader compilation, asset streaming, storage, memory pressure, or a game-side issue | Allow initial gameplay to settle and check the SSD and current patch |
| Rubber-banding or delayed hits | Network or server latency rather than rendering performance | Compare camera smoothness with server-response symptoms |
A high average FPS does not guarantee smooth frame pacing. Conversely, network lag cannot be fixed by lowering texture quality.

Check your hardware and game installation
Steam currently lists the following baseline requirements for Gray Zone Warfare:
Minimum listed hardware
- Windows 10 64-bit with the latest update
- Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, with AVX2 support
- 16 GB RAM
- One of the listed 8 GB-class GPUs, including the GTX 1080, RTX 2060 Super, RTX 3060, RTX 4060, RX 5700, RX 6600, or Intel Arc A770
- DirectX 12
- 40 GB of available storage
- An SSD
Recommended listed hardware
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit with the latest update
- Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
- 32 GB RAM
- One of the listed GPUs, including the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 4070, RTX 5070, RX 6800 XT, or RX 7800 XT
- DirectX 12 and an SSD
See the official Steam requirements for the current listing. Minimum specifications mean the game can meet its baseline launch target; they do not guarantee stable 60 FPS at high settings. Sixteen gigabytes of RAM is the listed minimum, while 32 GB is the more comfortable target for heavy asset streaming and multitasking.
Install the game on an SSD, keep free space available, and avoid testing from a nearly full or heavily occupied drive. An NVMe SSD may improve loading and streaming conditions, but moving from a healthy SATA SSD to NVMe is unlikely to create a major average-FPS increase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Establish a clean baseline
- Restart the PC.
- Fully exit Steam, including its system-tray client, then reopen it.
- Let Gray Zone Warfare finish updating before launching.
- Temporarily close browsers, recording software, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, and unnecessary launchers.
- Disable third-party overlays during testing.
- Use the same map, area, resolution, preset, and frame cap for every comparison.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows if available, GPU utilization, VRAM, RAM, CPU behavior, temperatures, and clock speeds.
Change one setting at a time and test for several minutes. Altering ten settings at once makes it impossible to identify the useful change or the source of a new problem.
Apply the fixes in order
1. Update the game and restart Steam
Steam may not immediately present an update, or an interrupted update may leave the installation in an unexpected state. Exit the game, quit Steam completely, reopen it, allow the download to finish, and restart Windows before retesting.
Check the official Gray Zone Warfare news and patch list before troubleshooting a new problem. The 0.4.x update cycle has included performance and rendering changes, and menu labels or frame-generation behavior can change between builds.
2. Update or clean-install the graphics driver
Use the official driver page for your GPU:
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver as well. Use the driver’s clean-install option when available. Do not assume that the newest driver is always best for every configuration, and avoid beta drivers unless you understand the risks.
3. Confirm the dedicated GPU is being used
Laptop users should check that the game is not running on integrated graphics:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Display → Graphics.
- Add or select the game’s executable.
- Choose High performance.
Also connect the laptop to AC power, select the manufacturer’s performance mode, and check for thermal throttling. A desktop can have similar symptoms if the display cable is connected to the motherboard rather than the graphics card.

- 9 Super Cooling Fans: The 9-core laptop cooling pad can efficiently cool your laptop down, this laptop cooler has the air vent in the top and bottom of the case, you can set different modes for the cooling fans.
- Ergonomic comfort: The gaming laptop cooling pad provides 8 heights adjustment to choose. You can adjust the suitable angle by your needs to relieve the fatigue of the back and neck effectively.
- LCD Display: The LCD of cooler pad readout shows your current fan speed.simple and intuitive.you can easily control the RGB lights and fan speed by touching the buttons.
- 10 RGB Light Modes: The RGB lights of the cooling laptop pad are pretty and it has many lighting options which can get you cool game atmosphere.you can press the botton 2-3 seconds to turn on/off the light.
- Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.
4. Choose an appropriate upscaler
Use the game’s current rendering options as starting points rather than permanent rules:
- NVIDIA: Start with DLSS. Test Quality, then Balanced. Use Performance only when necessary.
- AMD: Start with FSR and compare Quality with Balanced.
- Intel: Start with XeSS, then compare other available options if the current build provides them.
DLSS is not automatically better than FSR in every situation. Compare image quality, stability, ghosting, input response, and frame pacing on your hardware. Lowering resolution or upscaling quality usually produces a clearer diagnostic result than immediately reducing every visual setting.

Prioritize changes according to the bottleneck:
- GPU-bound: Lower resolution or upscaling quality, shadows, lighting, volumetric effects, reflections, and post-processing.
- CPU-bound: Lower view distance, foliage density, shadow distance, object detail, and effects involving many AI characters or world objects.
- VRAM-limited: Lower texture quality and high-resolution shadow or reflection options.
| Observed behavior | Useful first adjustment |
|---|---|
| GPU stays near maximum usage | Lower resolution scale, upscaler quality, shadows, or effects |
| GPU usage is low but FPS remains poor | Check CPU limits, frame caps, thermals, background tasks, RAM, and the current patch |
| VRAM is nearly full | Lower textures and high-resolution effects |
| FPS falls during combat | Lower effects, shadows, foliage, and view distance |
| Hitches happen in new areas | Allow shader and asset work to finish; check the SSD and game version |
6. Test Frame Generation separately
Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames; it does not remove the cost of rendering the original frames. It can improve perceived fluidity when base FPS is already reasonably consistent, but it can make a low or unstable base frame rate look better on the counter without fixing hitching or input response.
- Test with Frame Generation disabled.
- Establish the best stable base performance you can.
- Enable Frame Generation.
- Compare latency, ghosting, artifacts, and frame pacing—not only the FPS number.
Patch 0.4.5.0 added DLSS 4.5 support, including 6X and Dynamic Frame Generation on supported NVIDIA hardware. Availability depends on the GPU, driver, settings, and live game build; not every RTX card supports every mode.
Patch 0.4.4.0 also fixed a specific performance regression involving Fullscreen mode, Frame Generation, and alt-tabbing from the menu. If your problem matches that scenario, update the game before changing Windows settings.
7. Cap FPS at a sustainable level
An unstable high target often feels worse than a lower, consistent one. If difficult scenes fall to 60 FPS, a 120 FPS cap will not make the experience consistently 120 FPS.

Use only one limiter at a time while diagnosing. Compare the in-game cap with a driver-level cap, then test V-Sync or variable refresh settings without stacking conflicting limits.
8. Allow shader and asset compilation to finish
MADFINGER says that short stutters can occur during initial gameplay and when entering locations for the first time, with weaker GPUs potentially pausing for longer. The developer recommends allowing the game to stabilize rather than repeatedly closing it during the first-load phase. See the official performance guidance.
A first launch after a patch may therefore be worse than later sessions. Moving through new areas can trigger shader or asset work. Repeatedly quitting may cause that process to begin again. Persistent stutter every few seconds after multiple sessions is a different problem and warrants driver, storage, memory, overlay, and patch checks.

Patch 0.3.5.0 documented fixes for shader pre-caching, resource allocation, asset streaming, cloud and reflection calculations, network-spawned characters, loot, and weather-related hitch sources. That history matters: some stutter is engine-side and cannot be eliminated with a player setting.
9. Disable overlays and background capture
Temporarily disable Steam Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, Discord Overlay, OBS replay buffer or instant replay, RGB utilities, hardware-monitoring overlays, and third-party FPS limiters. Browser hardware acceleration can also be disabled temporarily when testing GPU contention.
These are controlled diagnostic tests, not guaranteed fixes. Re-enable software one item at a time after finding a stable baseline.
10. Remove overclocks and undervolts
Reset GPU and CPU overclocks, RAM profiles, aggressive undervolts, and third-party tuning profiles while diagnosing crashes or severe hitching. A system can be stable in other games yet unstable in a demanding Unreal Engine title. If stability improves at stock settings, reintroduce changes gradually rather than restoring the entire profile at once.
11. Test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
MADFINGER recommends Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling for supported NVIDIA RTX 40-series frame-generation setups, but it is not a universal optimization.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Display → Graphics.
- Open Change default graphics settings.
- Test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- Restart Windows.
Compare frame pacing and stability. Turn it back off if it introduces crashes, stutter, or worse performance.
12. Verify the game files
Use Steam verification after an interrupted update, unexpected performance change, missing objects or textures, or loading crashes:
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Gray Zone Warfare and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and retest.
Steam’s exact labels may change, but the verification option remains in the game’s installed-file properties.
How to tell whether the CPU or GPU is the bottleneck
Likely GPU-limited
- GPU utilization remains close to maximum.
- Lowering resolution or upscaling quality produces a clear FPS increase.
- GPU temperature and power draw are high.
- VRAM is near capacity.
Likely CPU-limited
- GPU utilization is substantially below maximum while FPS remains low.
- Lowering resolution changes little.
- FPS falls around many AI characters, objects, or players.
- One or more CPU cores are saturated even when total CPU utilization looks moderate.
- View distance, foliage, shadows, or object detail affect FPS more than resolution does.
Likely memory or streaming-related
- Stutter worsens during long sessions.
- RAM or VRAM approaches capacity.
- The game is on a hard disk or overloaded SSD.
- Hitches occur while entering areas or loading assets.
- Closing background applications helps.
Likely game-side or patch-related
- Performance changed immediately after an update.
- The same hardware and settings worked previously.
- Lowering settings has little effect.
- Many players report the same new behavior.
- Patch notes mention rendering, frame generation, memory, shader, or streaming changes.
Common problems and what to do next
“I lowered everything to Low and FPS barely changed”
Check for a CPU bottleneck, frame cap, V-Sync limit, thermal throttling, background software, or a game-side regression. Lower resolution or switch to a more aggressive upscaler. If FPS still barely changes, investigate CPU behavior and frame limits rather than lowering textures further.

“Frame Generation raises the number but the game still feels bad”
Disable it and judge the base frame rate first. If the underlying frames are inconsistent, Frame Generation may preserve poor frame pacing or add latency and artifacts.
“It stutters every time I enter a new area”
Allow the game to remain open and explore normally for a while. Check the SSD, memory pressure, driver, shader-cache behavior, and current patch. Do not assume a shader-cache change will solve the issue; several documented hitch sources have required game updates.
“It ran well before the latest patch”
Write down the exact build, check the official patch notes, verify files, and retest after resetting altered graphics settings. If the same hardware worked before the update and settings changes have little effect, report a possible regression rather than immediately reinstalling Windows or buying a GPU.
“I have an RTX 40-series card but DLSS Frame Generation is unavailable”
Check the exact GPU model, driver, Windows GPU-scheduling setting, game version, laptop GPU selection, and whether another graphics option disables the feature. DLSS 4.5 and Dynamic Frame Generation availability varies by hardware and build.
Recommended Free Tools
“FSR causes crashes or visual problems”
Disable FSR Frame Generation and test another available upscaler or native rendering at a lower resolution scale. Keep the result tied to your GPU, driver, and current version rather than treating one upscaler as universally reliable.
“The FPS is fine, but the game feels laggy”
Test with Frame Generation and overlays disabled, apply a sensible frame cap, and check monitor synchronization. If the symptoms are rubber-banding, delayed interactions, or delayed hit registration, select a geographically appropriate server region and investigate network latency instead of changing graphics settings.
When an upgrade is justified
Consider a graphics-card upgrade only when GPU usage is consistently near maximum, lowering resolution materially improves FPS, VRAM is full, and the current card is near or below the listed minimum tier. A faster GPU will not fix CPU-limited drops, shader hitches, network lag, or a patch regression.
Moving from 16 GB to 32 GB RAM is most relevant when Windows is paging, background multitasking creates memory pressure, or the game approaches available RAM. More memory does not directly fix a GPU bottleneck.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not make BIOS changes or disable hardware features as a first step.
- Do not download unofficial “FPS booster” or registry-cleaner programs.
- Do not change many settings simultaneously.
- Do not treat Frame Generation as a substitute for stable base FPS.
- Do not assume network lag is a graphics problem.
- Do not rely on an old “best settings” guide without checking the current patch.
- Do not promise fixed FPS gains from a setting, driver, SSD, or GPU without matching hardware and test conditions.
