If Once Human freezes or stutters, first identify which failure you have: a short hitch while moving through a new area, consistently low frame rates, network rubber-banding, a crash during shader compilation, or a complete system lock-up. The fixes are different. Install the game on an SSD, verify that your hardware has headroom, reduce settings in ESC → Settings → Graphics → Performance, update the GPU driver and repair the client for crashes, and apply the specific BIOS workaround if you use an affected Intel 13th- or 14th-generation processor.
The official Once Human FAQ (July 13, 2024) says an SSD can significantly reduce loading times and alleviate lag. Steam lists 8 GB RAM and a GTX 750 Ti 4 GB or RX 550 as minimum-level hardware, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060 6 GB, RX 580 2304SP or Intel Arc A380 as recommended graphics, and 100 GB of storage. Those figures are a baseline, not a guarantee of perfectly smooth play on every patch or server.

Identify what is actually stuttering
“Stutter” is often used for several unrelated problems. Watch the pattern for a minute before changing settings.

Low frame rate all the time
The image remains continuously sluggish, especially during combat or at a busy base. This points to a GPU, CPU, memory, resolution, or graphics-setting limit rather than a single shader hitch.
Rubber-banding or delayed actions
Your character snaps backward, enemies teleport, or inputs arrive late while the frame counter appears normal. That is a network or server path problem; lowering texture quality will not repair it.
Crash, black screen, or full lock-up
A return to the desktop, a crash at startup, a black display, or a computer that needs a hard reset requires driver, client, hardware-stability, or compatibility checks. Treat a whole-PC freeze differently from a one-second in-game hitch.

Use an SSD and leave working space
The Once Human Team recommends a solid-state drive because it “will significantly reduce loading times and alleviate lagging issues.” Steam also marks an SSD as highly recommended. Moving the installation from a hard disk to an SSD is therefore the highest-value storage change for streaming-related pauses, although it cannot cure every GPU, CPU, shader, or network problem.
A 1TB NVMe SSD is a practical upgrade path when your current drive is nearly full or is a hard disk. Before buying, check whether a desktop motherboard or laptop has an available M.2 slot, whether it accepts NVMe rather than SATA-only modules, and which PCIe generation it supports. A compatible newer drive will normally work at the platform’s supported speed; capacity and free space matter more than chasing a higher advertised sequential benchmark for this symptom.

Check the Steam requirement against your machine
Steam’s 2024 listing gives these reference points:
| Component | Minimum listing | Recommended listing |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 750 Ti 4 GB or Radeon RX 550 | GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, Radeon RX 580 2304SP, or Intel Arc A380 |
| Storage | 100 GB listed by Steam | Steam also marks an SSD as highly recommended |
These are not frame-rate targets. Meeting the minimum can still require reduced resolution and effects, and a system that technically meets the recommended list may be limited by thermals, background applications, laptop power mode, or a busy server.
Confirm free capacity and memory pressure
- Keep substantially more free space than the listed 100 GB so Windows, the game, and shader caches can expand without constant disk pressure.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, and other applications that consume RAM or GPU memory while testing.
- On a laptop, connect the charger and select the manufacturer’s performance mode; test again after temperatures stabilize.
Lower the settings in the official Performance menu
The Release FAQ (July 9, 2024) specifically recommends reducing graphics settings to increase frame rate. Use the in-game path rather than changing several unrelated files:
- Press Esc during play.
- Open Settings, then choose Graphics.
- Open the Performance section.
- Lower Resolution, Special Effects, Texture Quality, and Rendering Quality, then test in the same location or activity.
- Change one group at a time and note whether the hitch or frame-rate problem changes.
Use the result to find the bottleneck
| Change that helps | Likely limit | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Lowering resolution or rendering quality produces a large improvement | GPU workload or pixel throughput | Keep the lower render setting, then raise texture quality cautiously if VRAM allows. |
| Lowering special effects helps mainly during combat | Effects and shader workload | Keep effects reduced and retest an area with repeated combat. |
| Lowering textures changes loading or memory behavior, not average FPS | VRAM or streaming pressure | Use a lower texture tier and prioritize an SSD. |
| No graphics change affects rubber-banding | Network or server path | Check latency, packet loss, and whether other online services are affected. |
Do not judge success from a single turn in an empty area. Reproduce the same route, settlement, combat encounter, or weather effect after each change so the comparison is meaningful.
Reduce first-run shader hitching without misdiagnosing it
Unreal Engine explains that compiling a shader for its first use can take tens of milliseconds or more for one draw command. That creates a very long frame, experienced as a hitch or stutter. Modern Unreal workflows use PSO (Pipeline State Object) precaching and driver shader caches to reduce repeat compilation, but neither can eliminate every first-use pause.

What to expect after a driver update
Epic’s Unreal Engine technical guidance (February 4, 2025) notes that the driver cache is cleared when a new driver is installed. Longer loading or more shader hitching on the first run after the update is therefore normal while the cache rebuilds. Allow the game to complete its initial loading, then revisit the same areas before deciding that the driver made performance permanently worse.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Practical shader test
- Record where the hitch occurs and whether it repeats on every run.
- After changing drivers, launch once and allow menus, a short route, and common effects to load fully.
- Exit normally, relaunch, and repeat the route. A reduction in repeated hitches indicates cache warm-up rather than a persistent frame-rate limit.
- If the pause remains a crash or the game never reaches the menu, use the crash procedure below instead of repeatedly clearing caches.
Do not label every traversal pause a shader problem: streaming from a slow disk, insufficient VRAM, CPU saturation, and network delay can look similar without the same remedy.
Repair crashes, corruption, and visual failures
Update the graphics driver, then retest
Install the current driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU from its manufacturer and reboot. A clean driver installation can help when files are corrupted, but remember that the first launch can hitch longer while the shader cache is rebuilt. Compare a second run before rolling back solely because of initial loading.
Repair the Once Human client
Use the repair or verify option provided by your game launcher for Once Human. Let it finish, restart the launcher, and test the same startup or activity that failed. Repair is appropriate for missing or damaged game files; it will not fix an unstable CPU overclock or a failing drive.
Disconnect unusual controllers
The official FAQ identifies compatibility errors with specialty devices. Shut down the game, unplug pedals, gearboxes, flight joysticks, and similar unusual controllers, then launch with a standard keyboard, mouse, or conventional gamepad. Reconnect devices one at a time only after the game is stable so you can identify the conflicting device.

Special case: Intel 13th- and 14th-generation shader-compilation crashes
The July 13, 2024 official FAQ identifies startup crashes during shader compilation on certain Intel processors: Core i7-13700K, i9-13900K, i7-14700K, and i9-14900K. If your exact CPU is listed and the failure occurs while shaders compile, treat this as a platform-stability issue rather than simply lowering game graphics.
Update the motherboard BIOS first
- Read the exact motherboard model in Windows or on the board’s label.
- Open that manufacturer’s support page and read the BIOS release notes for the latest stable version.
- Follow the maker’s flashing instructions exactly, using stable power and the correct file for the board revision.
- After updating, load the manufacturer’s recommended defaults, boot Windows, and test Once Human before reapplying any overclock or undervolt.
A BIOS flash carries more risk than changing an in-game setting. Do not interrupt power, use a file for a different board, or rely on an unrelated tutorial.
Use Intel XTU only if the BIOS update is insufficient
The same FAQ suggests Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) and lowering the Performance Core Ratio from 55x to 54x. This is a specific stability workaround, not a universal performance tweak. Make one change, monitor temperatures and stability, and revert it if other workloads become unstable. If you are not comfortable with CPU tuning, have a qualified technician handle BIOS and ratio changes.
Choose the fix by symptom, risk, and cost
| Symptom | Best first action | Risk | Typical cost | Evidence basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long loads and traversal streaming pauses | Move the game to a compatible SSD; free space and lower textures if needed | Low for settings; hardware installation requires compatibility checking | Free for settings; SSD purchase otherwise | Official FAQ and Steam storage guidance |
| Sustained low FPS | Reduce resolution, effects, textures, and rendering quality in Performance | Reversible | Free | Official Release FAQ |
| First-use shader hitch | Allow cache warm-up; compare a second run after driver changes | Low | Free | Unreal Engine technical explanation |
| Crash or corrupted graphics | Update GPU driver and repair the client | Low to moderate; first run may be slower after driver installation | Free | Publisher troubleshooting plus engine cache behavior |
| Startup shader crash on listed Intel CPUs | Update motherboard BIOS; then consider 55x-to-54x ratio guidance | BIOS and tuning changes carry real stability risk | Usually free, unless professional help is needed | Official FAQ for the named CPUs and workaround |
| Rubber-banding with normal FPS | Investigate connection and server conditions | Low | Usually free | Symptom classification; graphics changes are not a network fix |
A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Classify the symptom as traversal hitch, sustained low FPS, rubber-banding, crash, or full system lock-up.
- Check Steam’s 100 GB listing, available disk space, RAM, GPU tier, temperatures, and whether the installation is on an SSD.
- Move the game to a compatible SSD when possible, especially if it is on a hard disk or a nearly full drive.
- Open ESC → Settings → Graphics → Performance and reduce the settings most related to your symptom.
- Reproduce the same route or encounter after each change; keep a note of the setting and result.
- For crashes or visual corruption, update the GPU driver, reboot, allow the first shader-cache rebuild, and repair the client.
- Disconnect pedals, gearboxes, flight joysticks, and other unusual controllers before relaunching.
- If startup fails during shader compilation and the CPU is a listed 13700K, 13900K, 14700K, or 14900K, update BIOS and only then consider the official XTU 55x-to-54x guidance.
- If the PC still locks up, stop experimenting with overclocks and check system temperatures, memory stability, storage health, and Windows reliability logs.
When to report the problem
Persistent failures that survive the sequence should be sent through the in-game form at ESC → Feedback & Customer Support → Bug Report or by email to [email protected]. Include your CPU and GPU models, RAM amount, storage type, operating-system version, GPU-driver version, game version, server or region, the exact location or activity, whether the issue is reproducible, and the steps that trigger it. For a crash, attach the time of the failure and any crash or launcher log the support form requests.
Describe “freezing” precisely: a 500-millisecond traversal hitch, a sustained low frame rate, rubber-banding with normal FPS, a shader-compilation crash, or a complete Windows lock-up. That distinction gives support a usable reproduction path and prevents a network symptom from being treated as a graphics setting problem.
