How to Fix “Game Can’t Be Optimized” in Windows 11

“Game can’t be optimized” usually indicates an NVIDIA profile or detection problem—not a broken Windows 11 installation. Follow these fixes in order.

“Game can’t be optimized” usually means NVIDIA App cannot retrieve or apply a supported settings profile for that game. It does not normally mean that Windows 11 is broken, your GPU has failed, or the game cannot run.

In most cases, update the game, launch it once until the main menu appears, exit normally, then reopen NVIDIA App and try again. If the game is not detected, rescan or add its installation folder. If no supported profile exists, manual in-game settings are the correct fallback.

First, identify which problem you have

NVIDIA’s Optimize feature is a profile system, not a Windows repair tool. It compares a supported game and hardware configuration with NVIDIA’s recommended settings, then attempts to apply those settings. NVIDIA says the recommendations are designed for the latest official version of a game and that first-launch configuration files may be required. See NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance.

  • Game not detected: NVIDIA App cannot find the game executable.
  • Detected but not optimizable: the app sees the title but cannot retrieve or apply a compatible profile.
  • Optimization succeeds, but performance is poor: the recommended preset does not suit your resolution, display, CPU, GPU, mods, or frame-rate target.
  • Already optimized: the current settings may already match NVIDIA’s recommendation, so there may be little or no visible change.

A game can therefore run perfectly while NVIDIA App reports that it cannot be optimized. NVIDIA supports a large but finite library rather than every PC game; when NVIDIA announced the app, it described optimal playable settings for more than 1,200 titles at that time. That figure is not a permanent guarantee of current coverage. See NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App announcement.

The quickest fix

  1. Update the game through its normal launcher.
  2. Launch the game normally.
  3. Wait until its main menu appears so it can create its configuration files.
  4. Exit the game normally.
  5. Reopen NVIDIA App.
  6. Open Graphics, select the game, and choose Optimize again.

This is NVIDIA’s recommended first procedure. It is a likely fix, not a guaranteed one. If the game crashes before reaching its menu, solve that launch problem separately first; NVIDIA App cannot reliably optimize a title that has not initialized its settings.

Use NVIDIA App, not old GeForce Experience instructions

NVIDIA says its migration from GeForce Experience to NVIDIA App is complete, although some older installations may still display legacy GeForce Experience labels. NVIDIA App combines driver management, game detection, game settings, and recommended settings controls. Download or update it from the official NVIDIA App page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open NVIDIA App.
  2. Go to Graphics or the game library.
  3. Select the affected title.
  4. Check whether the game is detected and whether an Optimize control is available.

If only one title fails, the problem is more likely to be that game’s profile, patch, executable, launcher, or configuration. If every game fails, app state, permissions, driver compatibility, or a damaged installation becomes more likely.

Fixes to try in order

1. Update the game and leave beta branches

NVIDIA’s profiles target the latest official game build. Use the launcher that installed the game:

  • Steam: check the game’s update status and confirm that it is not using a beta branch.
  • Epic Games Store: use the game’s menu to check for updates.
  • GOG Galaxy: update the game and avoid unusual preview or beta versions.
  • Xbox app or Microsoft Store: check the Library for updates.
  • Standalone launcher: update through that launcher.

Mods, test builds, alternate launchers, DRM changes, and publisher updates can change the executable or settings format that NVIDIA expects. Do not rename the executable to force detection: that can break updates, DRM, launchers, or anti-cheat systems.

2. Run the game once after installation or a major update

Start the game from its usual launcher, reach the main menu, allow it to finish any first-run setup, and close it. This can create the configuration files NVIDIA App needs. A reinstalled game may be present on disk but still lack those files.

3. Rescan or add the game’s directory

If NVIDIA App does not list the game:

  1. Open NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
  2. Open the menu for managing or adding program directories.
  3. Add the folder containing the game executable.
  4. Rescan the library.
  5. Select the title and try again.

The executable may be inside a Binaries, Win64, or launcher subfolder. A desktop shortcut may point to a bootstrap launcher rather than the actual game. Games on disconnected external drives, encrypted volumes, or drives unavailable at startup may also be missed.

Manual directory scanning can help detection, but it cannot create a profile for an unsupported title or build. NVIDIA documents adding program directories and managing entries through the Graphics interface in its NVIDIA App feature overview.

4. Update the NVIDIA driver

Open the Drivers section in NVIDIA App and install the current driver offered for your GPU. A driver update can resolve profile compatibility or app integration problems, but it cannot create support for a game NVIDIA does not profile.

On a laptop, check whether the manufacturer supplies a customized driver or requires a particular release policy. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use NVIDIA App’s available reinstall or rollback options before attempting more aggressive repairs. NVIDIA’s product documentation describes driver management in the app.

5. Assign the game to the high-performance GPU in Windows

On laptops and some hybrid systems, Windows may run a game on integrated graphics instead of the NVIDIA GPU. This can affect actual performance and GPU selection, although it may not remove the NVIDIA App message.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Display > Graphics.
  3. Add the game’s executable if it is not listed.
  4. Select the game and choose Options.
  5. Select High performance.
  6. Choose Save, then restart the game.

Use the actual game executable rather than assuming the launcher is the program that renders the game. Microsoft documents these per-app graphics preferences in its guide to Windows 11 windowed-game and graphics optimizations.

For laptops, test while plugged in and use the manufacturer’s performance mode when appropriate. Forcing the discrete GPU can increase heat, fan noise, and battery consumption, so it is not automatically the best choice for every situation.

6. Check Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization separately

Windows 11 has a feature with a similar name, but it is not NVIDIA App’s Optimize function. For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Restart the game.

Microsoft says this changes the presentation path for supported games and can enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on compatible hardware. It does not download or apply an NVIDIA game profile. It also does not apply identically to every game.

If a particular title becomes unstable, select it under Graphics > Options and disable the feature for that game, then restart. Microsoft notes that Auto HDR can automatically enable this feature; disable Auto HDR first if Windows will not let you turn off windowed-game optimizations. See Microsoft’s support documentation.

7. Reset NVIDIA App’s local cache carefully

Legacy GeForce Experience troubleshooting often recommends clearing a cache, sometimes called CefCache. This is a third-party troubleshooting procedure, not a universal official NVIDIA fix, and current NVIDIA App folder names may differ.

If you can identify the correct cache safely:

  1. Exit NVIDIA App.
  2. Open Task Manager and close remaining NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience processes.
  3. Press Win + R, enter %localappdata%, and press Enter.
  4. Locate the NVIDIA App or legacy GeForce Experience data folder.
  5. Back up the folder before removing a cache directory.
  6. Delete only the clearly identified cache, not unrelated NVIDIA folders or game data.
  7. Restart Windows and let NVIDIA App rescan.

Do not delete game saves or configuration files by mistake. Folder structures vary, so if you cannot identify the cache confidently, skip this step and repair or reinstall the app instead. A dated example of the legacy procedure is documented by The Geek Page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Repair or reinstall NVIDIA App

Reinstalling is especially reasonable if every detected game fails, the app says it cannot retrieve settings, it crashes, it forgets scan directories, or the issue began during an incomplete migration or update.

  1. Download the current installer from NVIDIA’s official site.
  2. Update or reinstall NVIDIA App.
  3. Restart Windows after installation.
  4. Launch one game once and reach its main menu.
  5. Rescan its directory.
  6. Test one known-supported title before checking the entire library.

Do not begin by deleting every NVIDIA folder, using a registry cleaner, or permanently disabling antivirus software. If security software is suspected, use only a narrowly scoped temporary test where appropriate and restore protection immediately.

9. Reserve clean driver installation for persistent corruption

A clean driver installation or a display-driver uninstaller is an advanced recovery measure for persistent driver corruption. It is not the normal solution to a missing game profile and should come after updating, rescanning, repairing NVIDIA App, and checking the game itself.

Before using an advanced driver-removal tool, download the correct driver, understand that custom display settings may be reset, and follow the GPU or laptop manufacturer’s guidance. A clean installation still cannot make an unsupported game optimizable.

When the button works but the result is poor

NVIDIA’s recommendation targets a balance between visual quality and performance. It may not match your preferred resolution, refresh rate, latency, image quality, or frame-rate target. High-resolution and ultrawide displays, ray tracing, VR, mods, CPU bottlenecks, shader-compilation stutter, and battery-powered laptops can all make a general recommendation unsuitable.

Compare the game’s settings before and after clicking Optimize. If performance becomes worse, restore the previous settings or select the game’s default preset.

Manual settings when no profile exists

You do not need NVIDIA App’s profile to make a game playable. Start with this practical order:

  1. Choose the game’s Recommended, Auto, or Default preset.
  2. Set the monitor’s native resolution, unless you deliberately want to use an upscaler.
  3. Choose fullscreen or borderless based on the game’s stability and latency behavior.
  4. Set a frame-rate cap appropriate to the display and your consistency target.
  5. Lower ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, view distance, and crowd or simulation density in that order as needed.
  6. Enable DLSS, FSR, or another supported upscaler when it suits your GPU and the game.
  7. Change one setting at a time and test the same scene.

Judge results by frame-time consistency as well as average FPS. A lower but stable frame rate can feel better than a higher average interrupted by stutter. Windows power modes can also affect laptops: Microsoft warns that higher-performance modes increase power use and may make a laptop warmer or drain its battery faster. See Microsoft’s PC performance guidance.

What to do based on the symptom

Symptom Most likely explanation Best next action
Only one game fails Missing profile, unsupported build, launcher, mods, or missing configuration Update, launch once, rescan, then configure manually
Every game fails App state, permissions, driver mismatch, or damaged installation Test a known-supported game, update the driver, then repair or reinstall NVIDIA App
The game is not listed Executable or installation folder was not detected Add the correct program directory and rescan
Optimize changes nothing Settings already match, or the game cannot write the configuration Compare settings before and after; check launchers, permissions, and mods
Performance worsened The preset does not suit your hardware or target Restore previous settings and tune manually

When to stop troubleshooting

If the game is fully updated, has been launched once, is detected correctly, and still has no usable profile, the remaining issue may simply be NVIDIA support for that title or build. The message does not prove the game is defective or unplayable. Submit feedback through NVIDIA App if the problem persists, as NVIDIA recommends, then use the game’s own settings and performance tools.

FAQ

Does this mean my GPU is unsupported?

No. It can mean that the game or its current build has no compatible NVIDIA profile, that detection failed, or that its configuration files are missing. Check the game on a known-supported installation before drawing conclusions about the GPU.

Will Windows 11 Game Mode fix the message?

Usually not. Game Mode and Windows graphics preferences are separate from NVIDIA App’s profile system. They may affect gaming behavior, but they do not create an NVIDIA optimization profile.

Should I reinstall the game?

Not as the first step. Update it, launch it once, and rescan its directory first. Reinstalling is worth considering only when the game itself has damaged or missing files and the launcher’s repair or verification tools cannot correct them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I force NVIDIA App to optimize an unsupported game?

There is no safe, universal way to force a profile that NVIDIA does not provide. Do not rename executables or modify launcher files. Use the game’s own presets and manual settings instead.

Will clearing the NVIDIA cache delete my saves?

A correctly identified app cache should not contain game saves, but folder names and locations vary. Back up first and delete only the clearly identified cache directory. Never remove all NVIDIA or game-data folders indiscriminately.

Should I use DDU?

Only as an advanced last resort for persistent driver corruption after normal app repair and driver-reinstall steps fail. DDU is not a routine fix for an absent game profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
