That does not mean every crash in a modded game is caused by a mod. A failure may instead involve the base game, the platform, graphics drivers, or another issue. The most useful first question is whether you can reproduce the same failure with mods disabled. That controlled comparison gives you a better direction than changing several settings at once.
Think of the diagnosis as two comparisons. First, did something change shortly before the problem began—such as a game update or newly installed mod? Second, does the problem still happen when mods are disabled? The first comparison helps identify a likely trigger; the second helps distinguish a mod-related problem from one that also affects the unmodded game. Neither test alone identifies every cause, but together they help you choose the next step without making unrelated changes.

Start by recording what changed
Before removing anything, note what happened just before the problem began and when the failure occurs. A short record helps you compare tests and give useful details to a mod author or game support.
- What changed: a game update, mod update, newly installed mod, changed load order, or different save or profile.
- Which versions: the game version and, where available, each relevant mod’s version.
- Where the failure occurs: at startup, while loading a save, or in a particular area or activity.
- What reproduces it: the action or sequence immediately before the crash, error, black screen, or other problem.
Change one variable at a time where possible. If you simultaneously update drivers, remove several mods, and repair game files, you may resolve the symptom without learning which change mattered. Record the current state before testing so you can retrace your steps.
A useful note can be brief: “Game version ___; platform ___; last change ___; crash occurs while ___; active mods ___; result with mods disabled ___.” Add the exact wording of an error if one appears. If the game or mod system provides a relevant log, keep it available for a support request; do not assume that every game exposes the same log or that a log is required for every diagnosis.

Recording the symptom precisely makes it easier to repeat the same test and avoids comparing, for example, a startup failure in one run with a save-loading failure in another.
Check mod compatibility before changing other settings
If the problem began after a game update, check whether each affected mod has been updated or declared compatible with that exact game version and platform. Read the mod’s description, update notes, and listed requirements. A mod may need a dependency that is missing or updated separately; two individually working mods may also conflict when used together.
Do not assume that a mod that worked yesterday still works after the game changes. Creators may need time to adapt their mods. Bethesda’s Skyrim guidance specifically warns about outdated mods, and Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance notes that updates and dependencies or conflicts can affect how mods function. Larian summarizes the issue this way: “Changes to the game, such as a new update, or mods with certain dependencies or conflicts, can impact how supported mods function.”
- Compare the mod’s compatibility information with the version of the game you are actually running.
- Check whether required dependencies are installed and whether their versions match the mod’s instructions.
- Look for a known-conflicts section or recent update note before changing unrelated game settings.
- If compatibility is unclear, treat the mod as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is safe for the current version.
Check the platform as well as the game version. Instructions or a mod build intended for one platform may not apply to another, and a creator’s compatibility note may be limited to a particular version or mod system. Do not infer that a mod is compatible merely because it appears in a manager or was previously enabled.

If a game update is the apparent trigger, avoid trying to solve the problem by changing many unrelated settings first. Find out whether the mod creator has posted an update or compatibility notice. If not, you may need to leave that mod disabled until its status is clear. The relevant comparison is not simply “old mod versus new mod,” but whether the specific version of the mod supports the version and platform you are using.
Protect your save before disabling or removing mods
Keep an unmodded save or backup separate from the modded setup before making changes. If the game supports separate profiles, or lets you make a copy of a save, use that as your test environment. Do not assume that removing a mod from an existing save is harmless: the result depends on the game and the mod.
Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance explicitly advises keeping unmodded saves available so you can revert if modded gameplay causes trouble. That is a prudent safeguard, not a guarantee that every game will handle removed mods in the same way. Follow the instructions for your particular game and mod system, and avoid overwriting the only copy of a save you want to keep.
Keep the distinction between disabling a mod for a diagnostic test and deciding to remove it permanently. The test is meant to determine whether the failure changes when that content is inactive. It does not establish that an existing modded save can safely continue without that mod. If you want to return to the modded setup, use the game’s supported process and the copy or profile you kept intact.

It depends on the game and mod; preserve an unmodded save and check the relevant game-specific instructions before changing a save you care about.
Disable mods and repeat the same test
Use the game’s mod manager or the documented removal method for that game. There is no universal folder path, load-order rule, or removal procedure that applies to every title and platform. After disabling or removing mods, restart the game if its instructions call for it, then repeat the same action that previously caused the failure. Use the same save or test conditions when that is safe to do.
- Preserve the original state. Keep your unmodded save or backup, and make a note of the active mods and their order if the game uses one.
- Disable or remove mods using the supported method. Consult the official instructions for your game, platform, and mod system rather than deleting files based on a guide for another title.
- Restart if appropriate. Some games or mod systems require a restart before changes take effect; follow the title’s own instructions.
- Reproduce the failure. Retry the same startup, save load, location, or action that caused the crash.
- Record the result. Note whether the issue still occurs and any error message or changed behavior.
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 support page recommends unchecking mods and checking whether the issue persists. Its instruction is direct: “With the mods disabled, see if the issue persists.” Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance recommends uninstalling a recently added Creation or mod and reloading to confirm whether it is related. These are game-specific examples of the same diagnostic idea: compare the failing setup with one in which the relevant mods are disabled.

For the comparison to be useful, keep the test as consistent as you safely can. If the original problem happened while loading a particular save, test that same situation only if doing so will not put your sole save copy at risk. If it happened at startup, test startup rather than a different part of the game. If the failure only appeared in one area, use that same area when possible. A different test may produce a different result for reasons unrelated to the mod change.

If the game’s documented process says to remove a recently added mod and reload, follow those instructions for that game. Do not substitute an internet guide’s file deletion steps, copy a path from another title, or change the load order simply because one game uses a particular arrangement. The correct method depends on the game, platform, and mod system.
If the problem disappears, isolate the mod or combination
When the game works with mods disabled, that makes a mod-related cause more likely, but it does not yet identify the culprit. The failure could come from one mod, a missing or outdated dependency, or an interaction among several mods. Re-enable mods in small groups and repeat the same test after each change. When a group brings the problem back, reduce that group until you can identify the mod or combination associated with the failure.
This gradual re-enabling method is a practical way to narrow the cause based on the official disable-and-retest guidance; it is not a universal procedure prescribed by those support pages. Keep notes about each test, including which mods were active and whether the failure returned. If testing a group is inconclusive, try a smaller group or individual mods rather than drawing a conclusion from a single inconsistent result.
A practical sequence is to begin with the clean test, then enable a small group and repeat the original action. If the issue returns, disable that group again to check whether the clean result returns. Then test smaller subsets, or one mod at a time, while keeping the rest of the conditions steady. This is not a guarantee that every conflict will be easy to reproduce; it is a way to reduce the number of possibilities methodically.
- One mod repeatedly triggers the failure: check its compatibility notes, requirements, and recent updates. If it remains reproducible, contact its creator with the details of the test.
- The failure occurs only with a particular combination: inspect the mods’ dependency and conflict information. The issue may be their interaction rather than either mod alone.
- A mod works alone but fails after a game update: recheck version compatibility; the old combination may no longer be supported.
- The result changes between attempts: repeat the comparison under the same conditions before attributing the crash to a mod.
Do not treat a working single-mod test as proof that the same mod is compatible with every other mod. A mod can work on its own yet contribute to a conflict in a combination. Conversely, if a group fails, that does not show that every mod in the group is faulty. Continue narrowing the group until the result is repeatable, and check dependency and compatibility information before concluding that one creator’s mod is the only cause.
Keep the original mod list and any load-order information the game provides in your notes. That record makes it possible to restore the prior arrangement using the game’s supported method and helps you describe the exact combination that reproduces the problem. Avoid changing the order, updating several mods, and enabling a new set all at once during the same test; those changes make it harder to tell what brought the issue back.

If the crash continues with mods disabled
A failure that persists in a clean mod test is not proof that a mod played no part, but it shifts attention toward the base game, platform, drivers, or another cause. At that point, follow the official support instructions for your game and launcher. Do not apply a repair step simply because it appears in instructions for another title.
Bethesda’s Skyrim PC guidance includes checking whether the system meets requirements, closing additional programs, updating graphics drivers, and verifying Steam game files. Its Starfield PC crash guidance also discusses requirements, performance settings, drivers, and file repair. These are examples for those games, not a universal checklist or menu path for every platform.

- After a repair or other change, repeat the same test so you can tell whether the problem changed.

Use the symptom and platform to decide which official instructions apply. Bethesda’s examples concern PC troubleshooting for Skyrim and Starfield; they do not establish that the same file-verification option, driver step, or performance setting exists on a console or in another launcher. Check the instructions for the actual title and platform rather than assuming that a menu or repair option has the same name everywhere.
If the unmodded test works only on a clean save or different profile, note that distinction. It may help narrow the problem to the original save or profile, but it does not by itself explain why that save behaves differently. Include the game and mod versions, platform, steps that reproduce the issue, and any relevant error message or log the game makes available. A concise comparison—whether the issue occurs with mods disabled and which mod or combination brings it back—is more useful than saying only that the game crashes.
Official game support can still help with the base game and its supported troubleshooting process, but may not be able to fix user-created content. Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods; Bethesda likewise directs mod-specific issues toward the creators. Use the game’s official support documentation for game or platform problems and the mod’s own support channel for a reproducible mod-specific problem.
When asking for help, report what you tested rather than only the final symptom.
