How to Fix Games That Keep Crashing on Your Windows 11 PC

Games crashing on Windows 11 can result from damaged files, drivers, overlays, unstable hardware, overheating, Windows corruption, or power problems. This guide separates game-specific crashes from system failures and gives you a safe troubleshooting sequence, exact Windows paths, repair commands, log locations, and clear guidance on when to test hardware or reinstall Windows.

The right fix depends on what is actually failing. A single game that crashes to the desktop usually points to damaged files, mods, settings, an update, or a game-specific driver/API problem. Several games crashing suggests a graphics driver, overlay, unstable BIOS setting, RAM, heat, Windows corruption, storage, or power problem. A blue screen, restart, or instant power-off should be treated as a system-stability or hardware problem rather than a game-installation problem.

Use this order: classify the crash, restart and update, verify the game files, remove mods and overlays, test graphics settings, roll back or clean-install the GPU driver, perform a clean boot, repair Windows, and then test RAM, storage, temperatures, BIOS settings, and power. Make one change at a time and retest so you know which change mattered.

First identify what kind of crash you have

Before changing drivers, reinstalling a game, or resetting Windows, record the exact symptom. These clues narrow the search, but none of them is a diagnosis by itself.

Symptom Investigate these areas first
Only one game crashes Game files, mods, configuration files, a recent game patch, launcher problems, anti-cheat, or a game-specific driver/API issue.
Several games crash to the desktop GPU driver, overlays, recording software, an unstable overclock or undervolt, RAM, overheating, Windows corruption, or power delivery.
The game freezes but Windows remains usable The game engine, GPU timeout, display driver, overlay, shader compilation, a repeatable game trigger, or insufficient resources.
The screen goes black and then recovers A display-driver reset, GPU instability, a display cable or monitor issue, or a graphics configuration problem.
The PC shows a blue screen or restarts A driver, BIOS, RAM, CPU/GPU instability, power delivery, storage, or Windows kernel problem.
The PC instantly powers off Overheating, PSU protection, a motherboard fault, or another power problem. Reinstalling game files normally will not fix this.
The crash began immediately after an update Roll back or clean-install the changed graphics driver, consider a recent Windows update, and check the game developer’s known-issues page.
The crash happens after a predictable number of minutes Heat, power demand, memory exhaustion, a memory leak, or a repeatable in-game event.

A Kernel-Power event is a good example of why logs require interpretation. It commonly records that Windows did not shut down cleanly; it does not, by itself, prove that the power supply is defective.

Use this troubleshooting order

  1. Classify the failure as game-specific, system-wide, a freeze, a BSOD, a restart, or a power-off.
  2. Restart the PC, then update Windows, the game, and its launcher.
  3. Verify or repair the game installation and remove unofficial modifications.
  4. Test the correct GPU, lower-risk graphics changes, alternate rendering modes, and disabled overlays.
  5. Roll back or clean-install the GPU driver if the timing points to a driver change.
  6. Use a Windows clean boot to find background software conflicts.
  7. Run DISM and SFC, then inspect storage if Windows itself appears damaged.
  8. Return BIOS and tuning settings to stock, and test RAM, temperatures, storage, and power if multiple games or the whole PC are unstable.
  9. Use Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer to correlate the crash with an application, driver, or hardware event.
  10. Repair-reinstall the current Windows version before using Reset this PC or performing a clean installation.

Do not perform every step at once. After each change, reproduce the crash in the same way, preferably in the same game area or benchmark. That makes the result meaningful.

1. Try the low-risk checks first

Restart the PC completely

Close the game and restart Windows rather than simply launching the game again. A restart clears a stuck driver state and temporary resource exhaustion. If the PC froze, use the normal Windows restart when possible; hold the power button only when it is completely unresponsive.

Install Windows updates

Use Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If Windows offers updates, choose Download & install, restart when finished, and test again. This is Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 update path; see the Windows Update instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also update the game and launcher. Check the game developer’s support or known-issues page if the problem started after a patch. Do not assume that the newest Windows update or GPU driver is automatically compatible with every game.

Check the game’s requirements

Compare the PC with the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and operating-system requirements. A system can launch a game while still falling short of the recommended graphics memory or RAM needed for a particular area, resolution, ray-tracing mode, or texture setting.

On a laptop, connect the AC adapter and select the manufacturer’s performance mode if one is provided. Temporarily disconnect unnecessary USB devices, especially newly added hubs, capture hardware, or peripherals with their own control software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify the game files before reinstalling

A damaged or incomplete game installation is one of the most common explanations when one title crashes while other games work. Use the launcher’s own repair function first.

Steam

  1. Restart Windows and open Steam.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Right-click the game, or open its library page and select the gear icon.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Steam recommends verification for missing content and crashes. Steam also notes that one or more files can fail verification because local configuration files may intentionally not be replaced. That result is not automatically evidence that the installation remains broken. Read Steam’s file-verification guidance and test the game after the process completes.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Go to Library.
  3. Select the three dots beside the game.
  4. Select Manage.
  5. Select Verify.

Wait for validation to finish before starting the game. Epic says verification repairs changed or damaged files without affecting saved data; its instructions are available in the Epic Games support article.

Other launchers

Look for the equivalent option named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, Validate, or Manage installation. Do not apply Steam’s menu path to another launcher as though the labels were identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If verification does not help

  • Remove unofficial mods, ReShade, custom DLLs, and injected overlays temporarily.
  • Reset the game’s graphics and configuration files using the developer’s instructions.
  • Test a new profile or clean save if the crash occurs only with one save.
  • Check whether the developer has acknowledged a current patch or anti-cheat problem.
  • Reinstall the game only after verification and game-specific checks fail.

Back up saves before deleting configuration folders. Do not delete arbitrary shader-cache or saved-game directories unless you know the exact path and what data will be lost.

3. Repair the launcher or Windows app

Microsoft Store and Xbox-related games may expose Windows repair controls. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the launcher or game, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options. If available, select Repair first. If that does not help, Reset the app.

Repair is the safer test. Reset can remove local app data, settings, or locally stored information, so confirm that saves are synchronized or backed up before using it. Not every traditional Win32 desktop game exposes these buttons; for those games, use the launcher’s verify or reinstall process. See Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs guidance.

4. Check the graphics driver and GPU selection

Identify the installed GPU

For basic information, use Settings > System > About. For the actual graphics adapter, open Device Manager > Display adapters. You can also run dxdiag or msinfo32 when collecting information for support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the laptop or prebuilt-PC manufacturer’s support page first. Laptop makers can customize graphics switching, power limits, mux behavior, and thermal controls. Intel specifically recommends the OEM graphics driver for laptops, Surface devices, built-in systems, and all-in-ones when one is available. A custom desktop can usually use the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver page for its GPU.

Update only when the timing supports it

Update the driver if it is old, the game lists a minimum driver, the OEM has issued a compatible package, or the release notes mention a fix for the affected game. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities; they can install an incorrect package and make rollback harder.

If you need an optional way to identify potentially missing or outdated Windows hardware drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, but verify any result against your PC or GPU manufacturer’s official package.

Roll back if the crash started after a driver update

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the GPU and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

Microsoft notes that reinstalling the previous driver can resolve problems that began after Windows Update. If the button is unavailable, download the previous known-stable driver from the OEM or GPU manufacturer’s official site rather than from a third-party mirror. The Microsoft driver guidance explains the Device Manager process.

NVIDIA: clean installation

  1. Download the appropriate Game Ready Driver from NVIDIA.
  2. Close games, browsers, GPU monitoring tools, tuning utilities, and other 3D applications.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.
  4. Choose Custom (Advanced).
  5. Select Perform a clean installation.
  6. Restart Windows when the installation finishes.

NVIDIA warns that background applications or Windows Update activity can interfere with installation. Follow its clean-install instructions. A clean installation is more appropriate than repeatedly installing the same package over a possibly damaged one.

AMD: return to stock and use Factory Reset when appropriate

AMD recommends returning the system to a stock configuration, disabling tuning utilities, and using the Factory Reset option during AMD Software installation when a corrupted or conflicting Radeon driver is suspected. Check the release notes; if the current driver has a known issue affecting the game, revert to a previously stable driver. See AMD’s stability and troubleshooting guidance.

Intel graphics

For Intel graphics, update the game and graphics driver, preferably through the system manufacturer where applicable. Intel also recommends checking BIOS updates when relevant, testing lower graphics settings or windowed mode, disabling Game Bar recording and background capture, and performing a clean graphics-driver installation if necessary. Use Intel’s game-crash troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid registry edits intended to increase the graphics timeout, permanently disabling Windows security features, or repeatedly using advanced driver-removal tools without a recovery plan. These are not first-line fixes for an ordinary game crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test Windows 11 graphics settings

Windows can select a different GPU or apply special behavior to an individual game. To test it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Under Custom options for apps, select the game, choose Options, and test High performance if the PC has more than one GPU. Save the change and restart the game.

In the same per-app area, test Optimizations for windowed games for that specific game if the setting is present. Microsoft says this feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes and can interact with Auto HDR. The relevant controls are described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-games documentation.

Change one setting at a time:

  • Borderless windowed versus exclusive fullscreen.
  • Lower resolution or texture quality.
  • Disable ray tracing temporarily.
  • Disable frame generation temporarily.
  • Disable HDR or Auto HDR temporarily.
  • Cap the frame rate.
  • Switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 if the game officially supports both.
  • Reset the game’s graphics settings to their defaults.

These are diagnostic tests, not proof that low settings are the permanent answer. If DirectX 11 works while DirectX 12 crashes, the cause could be a game-specific API bug, shader compilation or cache behavior, a driver/API interaction, or GPU instability exposed by the heavier workload. Use the supported mode that works while checking for a game or driver fix.

Disable overlays and recording temporarily

Overlays inject themselves into the game and can conflict with an update, anti-cheat, fullscreen mode, or another overlay. Temporarily disable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam Overlay.
  • Xbox Game Bar overlay and background recording.
  • NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay.
  • AMD overlay.
  • Discord overlay.
  • MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays.
  • Motherboard, RGB, monitoring, capture, and tuning overlays.

Intel specifically includes disabling Game Bar recording and background capture among its game troubleshooting tests. Re-enable features one at a time after the game is stable so you can identify the conflict.

6. Install runtimes only when the error points to one

DirectX legacy components

Windows 11 includes modern DirectX, but older games may require legacy components such as older D3DX libraries. For errors such as d3dx9_*.dll is missing or xinput1_3.dll is missing, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime or the installer bundled with the game.

The legacy runtime adds older components; it does not upgrade the DirectX version already built into Windows. Do not reinstall DirectX as a universal response to every crash. Microsoft’s explanation is in How to install the latest version of DirectX.

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

If the game reports a missing MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or similar DLL, install the appropriate Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft or run the installer included with the game. Do not download individual DLL files from random DLL websites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s current supported v14 package covers applications built with Visual Studio 2017–2026, but older games may need older redistributables installed side by side. Match the package architecture to the application: many 32-bit games require the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. See Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

7. Find background software conflicts with a clean boot

If several games crash, or the game works after closing a collection of utilities, use a clean boot as a controlled test. It starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping isolate conflicts. It is a diagnostic mode, not a permanent gaming configuration.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Search for msconfig and open System Configuration.
  3. Open the Services tab.
  4. Check Hide all Microsoft services. Do this before disabling anything.
  5. Select Disable all.
  6. Open the Startup tab.
  7. Select Open Task Manager.
  8. Disable enabled startup items.
  9. Restart and test the game.

Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in How to perform a clean boot in Windows. Some Windows functionality may be temporarily unavailable in this state.

If the game stops crashing, restore normal startup and isolate the conflict:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open msconfig again and select Normal startup, or restore the disabled services and startup items as directed by Microsoft’s procedure.
  2. Re-enable a group of non-Microsoft services and startup applications.
  3. Restart and test.
  4. Divide the remaining group in half if the crash returns, repeating until the offending program is identified.

Likely categories include overlays, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, CPU/GPU tuning tools, third-party antivirus, capture software, virtualization tools, anti-cheat conflicts, peripheral software, and motherboard control centers.

Do not permanently disable antivirus or other security software. If a security product quarantined a game file, check its history and verify the file’s source and signature first. If a narrowly scoped exclusion is necessary for a trusted executable, use the smallest possible exclusion and remove it if it does not help. Steam explains the false-positive and file-corruption issue in its antivirus troubleshooting guidance.

8. Repair Windows system files

If multiple games fail, Windows utilities are crashing, or logs suggest system corruption, run DISM followed by System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

If DISM and SFC do not resolve broader Windows errors, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional way to check for common repair and stability issues before you consider a reset; it is not a replacement for backups or hardware testing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to complete, then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent. Microsoft says DISM repairs the Windows component store and should be run before SFC; SFC then checks protected system files and replaces corrupted files where possible. See Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions.

What the SFC result means

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected system-file corruption was found.
  • Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and retest the game.
  • Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: inspect the CBS log if needed and move toward Windows repair; do not casually replace system DLLs manually.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode or move to the repair-reinstall path.

Repair-reinstall the current Windows version

On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet.

Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. It is a useful middle step before Reset this PC and is often omitted from generic gaming guides. The option may not appear on every edition, managed PC, or installation. See Microsoft’s current-version repair-reinstall documentation.

9. Check the game drive and Windows storage

Start with a non-destructive online NTFS scan. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk C: /scan

If Windows reports file-system errors, use:

chkdsk C: /f

Because the system drive is in use, Windows may schedule the repair for the next restart. Microsoft’s CHKDSK documentation distinguishes /scan, which performs an online NTFS scan, from /f, which fixes errors. Do not routinely use /r for every SSD-related game crash; it is a much more extensive operation.

  • The SSD manufacturer’s health and firmware utility.
  • Free space on both the game drive and the Windows system drive.
  • Windows critical storage warnings.
  • Event Viewer for disk, NTFS, and storage-controller events.

If a drive reports a critical warning, back up important files before attempting repairs. Microsoft specifically recommends backing up data when a storage device reports a critical warning; see what to do about a critical storage warning.

10. Test RAM, temperatures, BIOS settings, and power

Return the PC to a stock configuration

Temporarily disable CPU overclocking, GPU overclocking, undervolting, XMP or EXPO memory profiles, motherboard enhanced-turbo modes, automatic performance modes, and third-party tuning profiles. A setting can appear stable in ordinary desktop use but fail under a particular game’s combined CPU, GPU, and memory workload.

AMD lists unstable overclocking, overheating, unsupported memory configuration, outdated BIOS, and faulty hardware among possible causes of system stability problems. Its advice includes testing at stock settings and checking RAM, cooling, and hardware compatibility; see AMD’s system-stability troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter mdsched.
  3. Select Restart now and check for problems.
  4. Let the test complete.
  5. If necessary, press F1 during the test and select the Extended test mix.
  6. After Windows restarts, review the result.

Microsoft documents this procedure and says the result can be found in Event Viewer under the MemoryDiagnostics-Results log. A clean Windows memory test does not prove that intermittent RAM, memory-controller, motherboard-slot, or XMP/EXPO instability is impossible. If crashes continue, test with the system at default memory settings and use a longer, dedicated memory test according to the hardware maker’s guidance. Microsoft’s basic procedure is described here.

Watch temperatures and clocks while reproducing the crash

Monitor CPU and GPU temperature, clocks, fan behavior, and power limits while the game is running. Do not apply one universal temperature limit: safe limits vary by processor, graphics card, firmware, laptop design, and workload.

Important patterns include:

  • The crash appears only after the system heats up.
  • A fan stops, vents are blocked, or a laptop is being used on a surface that restricts airflow.
  • GPU clocks collapse before the screen goes black.
  • The display disappears and then recovers.
  • The PC instantly powers off under high load.
  • The crash disappears when the frame rate or power demand is reduced.

An instant power-off or load-related restart deserves investigation of the PSU, motherboard, cooling, connectors, and power delivery. It is not a reason to keep reinstalling the game.

Targeted Intel desktop exception

Intel’s July 21, 2026 guidance for affected 13th- and 14th-generation Core desktop processors says to install the motherboard vendor’s latest BIOS containing microcode 0x12F or later and use Intel Default Settings. This is a targeted stability measure for certain desktop systems, not a general Windows 11 fix and not a recommendation for all Intel CPUs or laptops. Check Intel’s current guidance and your motherboard manufacturer’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BIOS updates require a higher bar

A BIOS update can resolve CPU, memory, compatibility, and stability problems, but it is riskier than verifying game files or changing a graphics setting. Before flashing:

  • Confirm the exact motherboard or laptop model and BIOS package.
  • Use the manufacturer’s instructions, not a generic file.
  • Connect reliable power and avoid interrupting the update.
  • Back up important data.
  • Return overclocks and tuning profiles to default first.

Do not update the BIOS solely because one game crashes if the rest of the system is stable and there is no relevant manufacturer fix.

11. Use Windows logs to find evidence

Reliability Monitor

Press Win + R, enter:

perfmon /rel

Reliability Monitor displays a timeline of application and hardware failures. Look for a red X at the exact time of the crash and open the details. Record the game executable, Hardware error, LiveKernelEvent, driver installation, or Windows update that occurred around the same time. Microsoft documents the /rel switch in its Perfmon command reference.

Event Viewer

Open Event Viewer and inspect only the time window surrounding the failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Logs > Application for game crashes.
  • Windows Logs > System for driver, WHEA, power, disk, and unexpected-shutdown events.
  • Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results for the memory test.

In the Application log, Event ID 1000 from the Application Error source is the actual application crash event. It may show the faulting application, faulting module, and exception code. Event ID 1001 may contain additional Windows Error Reporting information. Microsoft’s application-crash guidance explains how to read these events.

A faulting module is a clue, not automatic proof of the guilty component. A graphics DLL can be the place where an earlier driver, overlay, memory error, or game bug finally becomes visible. Record:

  • Faulting application name.
  • Faulting module name.
  • Exception code.
  • Display-driver reset messages.
  • WHEA hardware errors.
  • Disk or storage errors.
  • BSOD stop code.
  • Exact crash time.
  • What changed immediately before the issue began.

Compare the timestamp with the game launch, driver update, Windows update, temperature spike, or power event. Do not treat every warning in Event Viewer as related merely because it is marked Error.

Watch temperatures, fan operation, clocks, RAM use, and GPU memory use while reproducing the problem. Test at stock BIOS settings, cap the frame rate, lower demanding settings, and remove overlays. A predictable delay can indicate heat, power demand, memory exhaustion, a leak, or a repeatable game event.

The screen goes black but Windows recovers

This pattern is consistent with a display-driver reset, GPU instability, a cable or monitor issue, or a graphics-mode conflict. Try the OEM or official GPU driver, roll back if the issue followed an update, disable overlays and HDR temporarily, test borderless versus fullscreen, and try another display cable or monitor if available. If the screen loss occurs across several games, investigate GPU temperature, stock settings, and power.

The game reports a DirectX error

Verify files, update or roll back the GPU driver based on timing, test the game’s supported DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 mode, reset graphics settings, and temporarily disable HDR, ray tracing, frame generation, and overlays. Install the DirectX End-User Runtime only for a legacy-component error such as a missing D3DX or XInput DLL; it does not upgrade modern DirectX.

The game reports out of memory

First restart Windows and verify the game. Remove mods, close unnecessary background applications, lower texture quality and resolution, disable high-memory features such as ray tracing or frame generation for testing, and monitor system RAM and GPU memory while reproducing the error. Check the game’s requirements and whether the problem occurs in one area or save. A single out-of-memory error does not automatically prove that physical RAM is faulty, but repeated failures across games justify memory, driver, temperature, and stability testing.

The PC shows a BSOD

Record the stop code and exact time. Treat the incident as a system failure: remove overclocks and undervolts, test RAM, update or roll back the relevant driver, check BIOS and storage, and inspect Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer, and WHEA entries. If blue screens occur outside games, game-file verification is unlikely to be the underlying fix.

The PC restarts or powers off

An unexpected restart can result from a driver, BIOS, RAM, overheating, storage, or power-delivery issue. An instant power-off under load is especially important: check cooling, GPU and motherboard power connections, PSU capacity and health, and the system’s stock configuration. Event ID 41 can confirm that Windows did not shut down cleanly, but it cannot identify the PSU on its own.

Only one game is affected

Focus on the game patch, known issues, file verification, mods, configuration reset, anti-cheat, launcher repair, runtimes, and the game’s supported graphics API. Avoid BIOS updates, aggressive hardware testing, or a Windows reset unless other evidence points beyond the game.

Every game is affected

Prioritize a GPU-driver rollback or clean installation, disabled overlays, a clean boot, stock BIOS and memory settings, temperatures, RAM, power, storage, DISM/SFC, and Windows logs. A system-wide pattern is evidence against a single damaged game installation.

When to roll back, repair Windows, or seek hardware help

Use the least destructive option that matches the evidence:

  1. Repair the game: verify files, remove modifications, reset settings, and use launcher repair.
  2. Roll back an update: if the crash began immediately after a GPU driver update, try the previous driver. If it began after a Windows update, record the KB number and use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates only when the timing and evidence support it.
  3. Repair the current Windows installation: use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when the option is available.
  4. Use System Restore: where an appropriate restore point exists and the problem followed a system change.
  5. Reset this PC while keeping files: consider this only after backups and after less destructive repair options fail. Apps and settings may be removed, and local saves can be at risk.
  6. Perform a clean Windows installation: reserve this for serious Windows corruption or a last-resort software diagnosis after backing up data, saves, licenses, and authentication information.

Microsoft distinguishes System Restore, update rollback, repair reinstall, Reset this PC, and installation-media reinstall in its Windows recovery options.

Seek professional or manufacturer support when the PC repeatedly powers off, fails memory or storage tests, shows persistent WHEA errors, cannot remain stable at stock settings, develops display artifacts, or crashes outside games. Hardware diagnosis is also justified when the problem follows the GPU or RAM into another known-good system, or when a laptop has unexplained thermal or power behavior.

Fixes that should not be your first move

  • Reinstalling Windows immediately: it can erase evidence and does not repair a failing PSU, GPU, RAM module, or overheating system.
  • Permanently disabling antivirus or Windows security: this creates a security risk. Test narrowly and briefly instead.
  • Disabling Memory Integrity for gaming: do not weaken a security feature without a specific, documented compatibility reason and a clear way to restore it.
  • Increasing the TDR timeout in the registry: this can hide a graphics stability problem rather than fix it.
  • Deleting every shader cache: do not delete unknown folders or saved-game directories without identifying the exact location and consequences.
  • Using driver-booster utilities: obtain drivers from the OEM or GPU manufacturer.
  • Forcing maximum-performance power mode on every PC: it can increase heat and power demand and is not a universal fix.
  • Running every game as administrator: use this only for a documented permissions-specific problem or when the developer recommends it. It can alter where files are written and create inconsistent permissions.
  • Assuming a faulting DLL is the root cause: it identifies where the crash surfaced, not necessarily what caused it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Event ID 41 prove that my power supply is bad?

No. Kernel-Power Event ID 41 records that Windows did not shut down cleanly. It can accompany a PSU or motherboard problem, overheating, a hard lock, or another failure, so compare its timestamp with temperatures, WHEA errors, driver events, and the actual symptom.

Should I always install the newest graphics driver?

No. Use the OEM driver first on laptops and prebuilt systems, and consider the newest driver when its release notes address your game. If the crash started immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous stable driver is often the more useful test.

Will reinstalling DirectX fix every game crash?

No. Windows 11 already includes modern DirectX. The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime is useful when an older game reports a missing component such as a D3DX or XInput DLL, but it does not upgrade the DirectX version and will not fix unrelated crashes.

When should I stop troubleshooting software and test hardware?

Move to hardware testing when multiple games fail, the PC crashes outside games, it blue-screens, restarts, instantly powers off, shows display artifacts, reports WHEA or storage errors, or remains unstable with all overclocks and memory profiles disabled.

The Bottom Line

Start with the symptom, not a favorite fix. Verify one game’s files and configuration when only that game fails; investigate drivers, overlays, stock BIOS settings, RAM, heat, storage, Windows, and power when every game or the whole PC is unstable. Use Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer to preserve evidence, repair the current Windows installation before resetting it, and treat repeated restarts, power-offs, failed hardware tests, and persistent BSODs as reasons for hardware or professional diagnosis.
