Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands crashes, will not start, or gets stuck loading on PS5, first identify whether the failure is a download or access problem, an installed-game crash, or a wider console issue. The game is listed as a PS4 title playable on PS5, not as a native PS5 release; that compatibility context is worth knowing, but it does not prove compatibility is causing your problem.
First, identify where Wildlands fails
Note the exact point of failure before changing anything. Does the game crash after gameplay begins, stop on a loading screen, fail before the title screen, or remain stuck downloading or installing? Record any error code or message. These symptoms point to different checks: an incomplete download is not the same problem as a crash in an installed game.

- Still downloading or installing: Let the download and installation finish before launching. Ubisoft cautions that starting a game or content before installation is complete can cause issues. See Ubisoft’s PlayStation 4 troubleshooting guidance.
- Padlock, purchase, or download error: Check account access, licenses, PlayStation service status, and download progress.
- Installed game crashes or hangs: Start with system updates and a full restart, then work through the less disruptive checks below.
What PS5 compatibility does—and does not—tell you
The US PlayStation Store lists Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition for PS4 and says it is playable on PS5. Sony warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5. Its backward-compatibility guidance also says some PS4 games may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. Those statements make compatibility relevant context, not a confirmed diagnosis of a Wildlands-specific PS5 bug. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5; the guidance page does not state a publication year for that figure. Read PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance.
The Store listing’s current US edition is called Definitive Edition. It identifies the game as a PS4 product and notes that all editions include the free Last Rites update, with a new story mission and other additions, including 4K and 60FPS availability. That update description does not make the game a native PS5 edition. Edition and availability details can vary by region and change; check the listing for your region at PlayStation Store.

Try low-risk checks first
1. Update the console and restart it fully
Install the latest PS5 system software, then turn the console off and restart it. Ubisoft’s general PS4 performance guidance begins with updating the system and power cycling. It is transferable troubleshooting advice for a PS4 game running on PS5, not a Wildlands-specific fix.
2. Check account access, licenses, and service status
If Wildlands shows a padlock, will not download, or reports an access problem, verify that you are using the account that owns the game. For subscription access, confirm that the subscription is still eligible. Check PlayStation service status and follow PlayStation’s game-download troubleshooting steps. Restoring licenses is also a reasonable next check when access is in question.

3. Test whether the problem depends on connecting online
If the failure appears during connection or sign-in, try launching once with the console offline. Ubisoft recommends an offline test in its PS4 troubleshooting guidance. Treat this only as a diagnostic: the Store says Wildlands online multiplayer and features require an internet connection, a Ubisoft Account, a PlayStation Network account, and PlayStation Plus. Offline play cannot provide those online functions.
4. Check installation status and free space
For a download or install problem, check available space under Settings > Storage, then resume or retry the download using PlayStation’s guidance. For an installed game that still fails, verify that the installation is complete. Ubisoft’s PS4 guidance suggests trying internal storage if a game is on an external drive; this is a troubleshooting option, not a promise that moving Wildlands between PS5 storage locations will fix a crash.

Use Safe Mode maintenance only if basic checks fail
PS5 Safe Mode provides several maintenance options that address different kinds of problems. They are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed Wildlands repairs. To enter Safe Mode, turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for three seconds. Once it is off, hold the power button again and release it after the second beep. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
- Repair Console Storage: Consider this for startup or storage issues. PlayStation says this option does not erase data; that assurance applies to this option specifically.
- Clear System Software Cache: PlayStation lists this for system-feature problems or performance drops.
- Rebuild Database: This scans the drive and recreates the content database, which may help with content or system organization problems.
See PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions for the available options and current steps. Do not treat Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as routine troubleshooting: PlayStation warns that these options delete user data.

Reinstall only after simpler steps
If the game may be corrupted or still fails after the checks above, deleting and reinstalling it is a reasonable later step supported by Ubisoft and PlayStation troubleshooting guidance. Before deleting it, make sure you can reinstall it from your library or disc and know the credentials for the account that owns it. A disc copy is not a remedy for a software, storage, or console fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Work out whether the issue is Wildlands or the PS5
Try another game on the same PS5. If other games and system features work normally while Wildlands alone fails, that helps narrow the issue to the game, its installation, or its access path; it does not identify which one. Ubisoft also suggests comparing with another console where possible. If several games or system features fail, or Wildlands remains broken after supported troubleshooting, contact PlayStation Support.
