How to Fix Ghosting, Flickering, and Blurry Details with DLSS

A step-by-step way to identify which DLSS feature is causing blur, flicker, ghosting, or unstable UI—and what you can and cannot fix in game settings.

To troubleshoot DLSS artifacts, first identify which feature is active—Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, or Frame Generation—then compare the game with that feature off and on while keeping other settings unchanged. Some problems can be reduced with in-game or NVIDIA app options; others come from how a game supplies rendering data to DLSS and need a developer fix.

Identify the DLSS feature before changing settings

DLSS is a family of features, not one image-quality switch. The distinction matters because each feature processes different parts of the frame and has different likely causes for artifacts.

  • Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution input.
  • Ray Reconstruction reconstructs ray-traced or path-traced effects and replaces traditional hand-tuned denoisers.
  • Frame Generation synthesizes additional frames between rendered frames.

Support also varies by GPU generation. NVIDIA lists Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction for GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series, while standard Frame Generation support is listed for RTX 40 and 50 Series. Check compatibility for the specific feature and game in NVIDIA’s DLSS overview; having a compatible GPU does not, by itself, prevent artifacts.

Run a controlled A/B check

Before adjusting multiple graphics options, record the game, GPU, driver and NVIDIA app versions, resolution, active DLSS component, selected mode or preset, and whether Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation is enabled. That makes the issue easier to reproduce and gives a developer useful details if the cause is in the game.

  1. In the game’s graphics or video settings, turn off the feature associated with the symptom, if the game allows it. Capture the same scene or movement.
  2. Turn that feature back on without changing resolution or other graphics settings, then compare the same scene. Change only one DLSS component at a time.
  3. If the artifact returns, test available modes or related settings for that component using the symptom-specific checks below.
  4. If turning the feature off makes no difference, test the other active DLSS components individually rather than assuming DLSS is responsible.

This comparison helps narrow the trigger; it does not establish the underlying cause or mean that disabling the feature is the best permanent choice.

Fix soft or blurry fine detail

Compare Super Resolution scaling options

When fine detail looks soft, compare the Super Resolution modes supported by the game. NVIDIA’s app also provides per-game DLSS model overrides and Super Resolution scaling customization in supported titles. Options vary with the title, in-game setting, app or driver version, and hardware, so a particular control or label may not be available in every setup. See NVIDIA’s NVIDIA app DLSS override guidance.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

A higher input resolution may preserve more detail, but it also uses more performance headroom. Compare image quality and performance on your system rather than assuming one mode is universally best.

Check Ray Reconstruction separately

In a ray-traced or path-traced game, compare the image with Ray Reconstruction disabled and enabled, if the game exposes that option. Its results depend on the game’s implementation. NVIDIA announced a DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction model in 2026, describing it as having 35% more compute capability than the prior model and processing 20% more parameters while maintaining similar performance. Those figures are NVIDIA’s model comparison, not a promise of a particular game’s sharpness or speed; see the 2026 announcement.

  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Recognize when blur may be a game integration issue

NVIDIA’s developer guidance identifies missing mip-map bias under Ray Reconstruction as a possible reason textures look blurry, smudged, or low-resolution. Mip-map bias is part of the game’s rendering integration, not typically a player-facing setting. If the blur occurs only in one title and remains after testing available options, report the specific scene and settings to that game’s developer rather than looking for an engine-level control in the graphics menu. NVIDIA explains this in its Ray Reconstruction integration guidance.

Diagnose flickering

Test whether flickering appears with Super Resolution alone or only when Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation is active. Toggle one component at a time, using the same scene and otherwise unchanged settings. This helps distinguish a feature-specific trigger from a symptom that persists across configurations.

NVIDIA’s Streamline developer guidance states: “Incorrect or missing jitter can lead to poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering.” Jitter is rendering data supplied as part of a game’s integration. A player can test available settings, but generally cannot correct a game’s jitter implementation. If the problem is limited to one game after the A/B checks, include that observation in a report to its developer. See NVIDIA’s Streamline integration article.

Reduce ghost trails and unstable moving objects

First isolate Frame Generation: compare the same moving scene with it off and on, then test motion blur separately. NVIDIA’s Frame Generation integration checklist notes that inaccurate inputs can increase ghosting; missing or incorrect inputs can also contribute to blurry objects, flickering, and unstable HUD or UI elements. The checklist also warns that excessive motion blur can produce image-quality artifacts with generated frames. These are possible integration-related causes, not proof that every trail or moving-object artifact has the same explanation.

If reducing motion blur helps, you can keep it lower as a workaround. If the artifact persists only with Frame Generation in one title, record that behavior for the developer. NVIDIA’s Frame Generation integration checklist describes the rendering inputs developers need to provide.

When settings do not fix it

Game engines supply data such as motion vectors, jitter, exposure, mip bias, and other buffers used by DLSS features. NVIDIA’s developer documents describe how incorrect or missing inputs can produce visual problems, but they cannot identify the cause in a particular player’s game. Players usually cannot edit or replace those engine inputs through normal graphics settings.

If a clean A/B comparison leaves the artifact tied to one title or feature, send the game developer a short clip and the details you recorded: GPU, game and driver/app versions, resolution, DLSS component and mode, relevant toggles, and steps to reproduce the scene. This gives the developer a reproducible report without assuming the root cause.
