If Google Earth Pro fails to download or install with error 0x80070057, replace the small web installer with Google’s official full Windows installer. Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit build that matches Windows, download it again, and run it with administrator access. If that still fails, work through the Windows checks below for permissions, damaged files, disk space, Windows Update components, date and time, and security-software interference.

What error 0x80070057 means during a Google Earth Pro install

Microsoft labels 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” In Windows installation and Windows Update guidance, the code can be associated with corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration. Those categories describe possible Windows-side conditions; they do not identify one unique cause for every Google Earth Pro failure.

For this particular download problem, the most useful first distinction is the installer type. A small web installer has to fetch additional files while it runs. Google also provides a complete Windows installer, which can avoid a failed download step or a problem with the web installer’s handoff to Windows. A Google Earth Community discussion about this exact code reports success after users downloaded the full installer, but that is user experience rather than a guaranteed fix.

Before changing Windows, identify the installer and your system architecture

Web installer versus full installer

Option What it does When to use it
Small web installer Starts a download during setup and then installs the program. Convenient when the download and setup handoff work normally.
Official full/direct installer Downloads the larger installation package first, then runs setup from that file. Preferred for error 0x80070057 because it removes the web installer’s download step from the retry.

Use Google’s Update Google Earth Pro page rather than a third-party download mirror. Google lists Windows installers there and identifies versions 7.1.7 and earlier as no longer supported.

Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select System, then About. In Windows 10, select System, then About.
  3. Read System type. It will indicate whether the installed operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Return to Google’s download page and select the installer with the matching architecture.

Do not assume that a 64-bit processor means a 64-bit Windows installation. The installer must match the operating system shown in System type. Google’s page lists version 7.3.7 Windows installers in both architecture choices.

Fix 0x80070057 with the official direct installer

  1. Open Google’s Update Google Earth Pro page.
  2. Select the Windows 32-bit or 64-bit full/direct installer that matches your system type.
  3. Save the installer locally instead of launching a temporary browser download. The Downloads folder is fine if it has enough space.
  4. When the download finishes, close the browser window that started it. This prevents the old web-installer process from remaining active.
  5. Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt with an administrator account.
  6. Allow setup to finish without putting the computer to sleep or ending the process. If the installer opens normally, complete the installation and launch Google Earth Pro from the Start menu.

If the direct package installs successfully, no Windows repair is required. If it returns 0x80070057 again, continue in order rather than repeatedly downloading the same web installer.

Restart and retry with a clean setup attempt

A restart clears a setup process that is still holding a file or installer component open. Choose Start, select Power, and choose Restart. After Windows loads, do not open other installers or system-cleanup utilities. Run the saved direct installer again with Run as administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If more than one Google Earth Pro installer is in Downloads, use the newest file you obtained from Google’s page and remove only clearly incomplete duplicate downloads. Do not delete Windows folders or registry entries to resolve this code.

Check storage and the target drive

Confirm free space

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click the drive where Windows and the installation are located, normally Local Disk (C:), and select Properties.
  3. Check the free-space figure on the General tab. If the drive is nearly full, empty the Recycle Bin and remove files you can identify safely, or choose another location for the downloaded installer.
  4. Download the direct installer again after space has been made available, then retry setup as administrator.

Check for a drive problem

In the same drive Properties window, open the Tools tab and use Windows’ built-in error-checking option if it is offered. Let the check complete before attempting installation again. A failing or inconsistent target drive can prevent an installer from creating or updating files, so persistent errors on the same drive warrant professional Windows support or hardware diagnostics rather than repeated setup attempts.

Run Windows’ installation or update troubleshooter

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance treats 0x80070057 as a Windows installation or update symptom, so use the built-in troubleshooter appropriate to your edition.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Run the available troubleshooter related to Windows Update or installing applications.
  4. Apply a recommended repair, restart Windows if requested, and retry the Google Earth Pro direct installer.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Run the Windows Update or installation-related troubleshooter shown on your system.
  4. Restart when prompted, then run the direct installer with administrator access.

Labels can differ slightly after Windows updates. If a listed troubleshooter is unavailable, continue with the manual checks below instead of downloading an unverified troubleshooting program.

Repair Windows system files with System File Checker

Corrupted Windows files are one of the conditions Microsoft associates with this error family. System File Checker (SFC) can check protected system files and repair problems it is able to correct.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. At the elevated prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
  2. Read the result. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart Windows and retry the Google Earth Pro installer. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, move to the next check. If it cannot complete, record the message and seek Windows support before making more invasive changes.

SFC is a Windows repair operation, not a Google Earth-specific uninstall or download tool. Running it from a non-elevated Command Prompt will not provide the permissions it needs.

Refresh Windows Update components if setup is using them

Some installation workflows depend on Windows Update components. Microsoft’s guidance includes stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution cache, and starting the service again. This resets cached update files; it does not remove your personal documents.

  1. Save your work and close Windows Update, Settings, and other installers.
  2. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. Find Windows Update in the Services list, right-click it, and choose Stop. Keep the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  5. Delete the contents inside that folder, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and close any remaining update window.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  7. Restart Windows, download the official direct installer again, and run it as administrator.

Do not use this step while another Windows update is actively installing. If the service will not stop or start, leave the cache unchanged and contact Windows support rather than deleting additional system folders.

Verify automatic date, time, and time zone

An incorrect clock can interfere with downloads, update validation, and installer communications. Windows can correct it automatically.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, go to Time & language > Date & time. In Windows 10, go to Time & Language > Date & time.
  3. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are available.
  4. Use Sync now if Windows provides it, then restart the installer.

If the computer belongs to an organization that controls these settings, do not override its policy; ask the administrator to correct the clock.

Check antivirus and firewall interference safely

Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting includes security software as a possible source of interference. If you use a third-party antivirus or firewall, pause its protection only for the time needed to retry the installer, and only if you understand how to restore it.

  1. Save the direct installer from Google before pausing protection.
  2. Open the third-party security application and use its temporary pause or maintenance option. Do not remove the program.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and observe whether the same code appears.
  4. Immediately re-enable antivirus and firewall protection after the test, whether setup succeeds or fails.

If the installation works only while protection is paused, add no permanent exception until you have confirmed the installer came from Google. Ask the security vendor or your organization’s administrator for a safe allow-list procedure instead. Never leave protection disabled as a workaround.

Close background programs and try a clean boot

Another installer, updater, backup process, or monitoring utility can lock files or change permissions while Google Earth Pro is being installed. Close unnecessary applications from the taskbar and notification area, restart Windows, and try once more before changing system settings.

If the failure continues, a Windows clean boot can help determine whether a startup service is interfering. Use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version, disable non-Microsoft startup items and services for the test, restart, and run the direct installer. Record what you changed. After the test, return Windows to normal startup and re-enable items in groups so you can identify a conflict. If this process is unfamiliar or the computer is managed by an employer or school, ask Windows support to guide it.

Choose the right escalation when the error remains

What you observe Most useful next action
The web installer fails, but the full package has not been tried. Download the official direct installer matching 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and run it as administrator.
The direct package fails immediately with 0x80070057. Restart, check administrator access, free disk space, and run the installation troubleshooter.
SFC reports repaired files. Restart Windows and retry the direct installer once.
Windows Update service or cache operations fail. Stop changing system folders and seek Windows support, especially on a managed PC.
The installer works only when security software is paused. Restore protection and obtain an approved allow-list instruction from the security vendor or administrator.
Every installer fails on the same drive. Check the drive and obtain professional Windows or hardware diagnostics.

When contacting support, provide the exact code, Windows edition and system type, the Google Earth Pro version shown on the download page, whether you used the full installer, and the point at which setup stopped. Do not send passwords or unrelated personal files.

Versions and compatibility points to remember

  • Google lists Windows version 7.3.7 installers on its Update Google Earth Pro page.
  • Google states that versions 7.1.7 and earlier are no longer supported; an old installer should not be your fallback.
  • The 32-bit and 64-bit choices refer to the installed Windows architecture, not simply the processor model.
  • Error 0x80070057 is a general Windows parameter or configuration error. It is not proof that Google Earth Pro itself is damaged, and it is not proof of malware.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

If the manual checks do not resolve the installation failure, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional Windows diagnostic and repair shortcut that can address some broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, settings and temporary-file problems; it complements antivirus protection, does not replace it, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
