Fixing GTA 5 on PC starts with identifying the edition, launcher, failure point, and exact error message. Enhanced and Legacy have different hardware requirements, while errors such as ERR_GFX_STATE, D3DERR_DEVICELOST, and code 134 require different remedies. Follow the diagnostic order below: match your requirements, update the game and graphics driver, verify files, apply the error-specific fix, then isolate software conflicts before reinstalling.

- Whether you run Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced or Grand Theft Auto V Legacy.
- Whether the game starts through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games.
- When it fails: before the launcher opens, while loading, after entering Story Mode or GTA Online, or during play.
- The exact error code or wording, including punctuation. A screenshot is useful if the message disappears quickly.
This separates a graphics-driver failure from damaged game files, an outdated build, a launcher problem, or a performance conflict. The collection of this information is also what Rockstar requests when you open a support case.

Do not treat every crash as the same problem. A launch failure before the game window appears points you toward the launcher, prerequisites, permissions, or installation. A crash after changing the graphics API points more directly toward the driver or rendering path. A stutter that appears only while streaming the open world calls for a different test than a repeatable crash when entering GTA Online. Record what you were doing immediately before the failure so each test has a clear comparison.

Check the correct PC requirements
Do not compare your computer with the wrong edition. Rockstar’s PC requirements page, last updated December 10, 2025, lists the following baselines. These are compatibility requirements, not frame-rate guarantees; the page warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter them over time.
| Edition and tier | Operating system | Memory | Graphics hardware | Storage | CPU |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enhanced minimum | Windows 10 build 1909 or later | 8 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 1630 4 GB or Radeon RX 6400 4 GB | 105 GB SSD required | Not stated in the cited requirements row |
| Enhanced recommended | Windows 11 | 16 GB dual-channel RAM | GeForce RTX 3060 8 GB or Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB | 105 GB DirectStorage-compatible drive | Not stated in the cited requirements row |
| Legacy minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | 4 GB RAM | GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB or Radeon HD 4870 1 GB | 125 GB HDD | Not stated in the cited requirements row |
| Legacy recommended | Windows 10 64-bit | 8 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 660 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB | 125 GB HDD | Not stated in the cited requirements row |
Check the free space available, not just the drive’s advertised capacity. Rockstar says an “Installation failed” message is usually caused by insufficient room for the game, temporary extraction data, and prerequisite files. That installation-specific warning does not establish that low free space causes every crash or stutter, but a nearly full drive can prevent updates or file verification from completing.
How to interpret the comparison
Enhanced’s minimum row requires 8 GB of memory and a 105 GB SSD, while Legacy’s minimum row lists 4 GB and a 125 GB HDD. Those numbers are not interchangeable. Likewise, Enhanced’s recommended target is 16 GB of dual-channel memory and a DirectStorage-compatible drive; Legacy’s recommended row is 8 GB and a 125 GB HDD. If your PC falls below the row for the edition you actually launch, software changes may not make it stable. If it meets only the minimum, expect that the requirement is a floor rather than a promise of a particular frame rate or hitch-free streaming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare the operating system and graphics memory as well as the GPU model. A card with a similar name but less VRAM is not the same specification. Confirm the edition shown in your library before deciding that an upgrade is necessary, and remember that Rockstar says requirements can change as downloadable content and programming change.
Use this order before reinstalling
- Install the current game patch. Let the active launcher finish every pending update. An old executable can produce launch errors even when the hardware is adequate.
- Update the graphics driver. Use the driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer. If
ERR_GFX_STATEstarted immediately after a driver update, Rockstar specifically permits trying an earlier driver version instead. - Verify the installation. Use the launcher’s file-verification option before deleting or reinstalling anything. Verification replaces missing or altered files while preserving the rest of the installation.
- Confirm system software. Check that the edition’s Windows, memory, graphics, and storage requirements are met, and that DirectX and the Microsoft Visual C++ components required by the game are present.
- Temporarily remove conflicts. Close overlays, recording or sharing utilities, and other software that injects itself into games. Check security software and firewall rules as possible interference points.
- Re-test after one change at a time. A single change makes it possible to identify the cause and roll back a setting that does not help.
Reinstall only after the applicable checks above fail. A reinstall cannot correct an unsupported graphics card, a conflicting overlay, or a driver problem.
Make each test measurable
Use the same save, location, or activity for each comparison whenever possible. For example, test the same loading transition after verifying files, then repeat it after closing an overlay. Write down whether the failure disappeared, changed timing, or remained identical. This prevents several simultaneous changes from obscuring the cause and makes your eventual support report more useful.
Keep reversible changes separate from permanent ones. Temporarily closing a recorder or changing an API is an isolation test; it does not prove that the software is permanently incompatible. Restore security protections and other background tools after testing, then re-enable them individually if you need to locate a conflict.
Fix ERR_GFX_STATE
1. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE guidance starts with the graphics driver. Install the current driver for your GPU, restart Windows, and test the game. If the error remains and began after a driver change, test an earlier driver release rather than repeatedly installing the same package.
2. Change the graphics API
- Open GTA 5 and go to Settings > Graphics > Advanced Settings.
- Change the Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.
- Save the setting and return to the menu as Rockstar directs.
- Restart the game and test the same activity that produced the error.
This is an API compatibility test, not a promise that DirectX 12 is faster on every system. If the game cannot stay open long enough to change the option, use the launcher and configuration recovery options available for your edition, then apply the driver checks first.

3. Run the executable with the compatibility options Rockstar specifies
If the driver and API change do not help, follow Rockstar’s launcher-specific instructions to locate GTAV.exe. Open its file properties, enable Run this program as an administrator, and disable Fullscreen optimizations on the Compatibility tab. Use the path that matches Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games rather than applying a shortcut to a different installation.
Apply these options to the executable belonging to the active installation. Changing an old shortcut or a second copy of the game will not test the failing installation and can make the results confusing.

Rockstar says this error is usually associated with a graphics-driver issue or a conflict involving DirectX 3D and the display driver. The first remedy is therefore the driver, not a blind game reinstall.
- Install the current graphics driver for your card.
- If the installer offers it, choose a clean installation so older driver components do not remain active.
- Restart Windows and test the game before changing several graphics options at once.
Use the clean-install procedure supplied by your graphics vendor. If the error appeared after a driver update, an earlier driver can be tested, but keep a record of the version so you can reverse the change. If the error persists unchanged, collect the diagnostic files rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
Fix GTA 5 error code 134
Rockstar associates code 134 with a game version that has not been updated. Start with the launcher that owns the installation.
Rockstar Games Launcher
Open the launcher, select GTA 5, and use its option to check for updates or verify the game files. Allow the process to finish before starting the game again.
Recommended Free Tools
Steam
Use Steam’s installed-game properties and its Verify integrity of game files command. Rockstar’s general PC guidance also refers to verifying the Steam cache. Wait for the scan and any replacement downloads to complete.
Epic Games
Open the game’s menu in Epic Games Launcher and choose Manage > Verify. The launcher compares local files with the current version and downloads replacements where necessary.
If verification does not resolve code 134
For Steam and Epic installations, Rockstar’s code-134 guidance describes reinstalling after verification fails. Record your saves and note any custom files before removing the installation. Reinstall through the same store that owns the game; mixing launchers can leave an installation that the active account cannot validate.

Why launcher ownership matters
Verification must be performed by the service that manages your copy. A Steam installation should be checked in Steam, an Epic installation in Epic Games Launcher, and a Rockstar installation in Rockstar Games Launcher. Running a different launcher or pointing it at another folder can lead you to repair the wrong files. Before reinstalling, note where the working installation lives and which account owns it.
When GTA 5 crashes on startup without a code
Confirm the edition and launcher
Enhanced and Legacy are separate PC editions with separate requirements. A computer that meets Legacy’s 4 GB minimum memory and 125 GB hard-drive specification is not automatically suitable for Enhanced, whose minimum is 8 GB RAM, a 105 GB SSD, and the newer graphics baseline shown above.
Check files before changing Windows permissions
Run the launcher’s verification function, then restart Windows. Verification is safer than deleting individual files because it restores the expected version without guessing which component is damaged.
Check DirectX and C++ components
Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting list includes confirming DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ components. Repair or reinstall those prerequisites only from the installer associated with the game or Windows, and restart before testing again.
Check security software and launcher integrity
Security software or firewall rules can block launcher communication or game components. Review blocked-event logs and create an exception only when you understand what was blocked. Re-enable any protection that you temporarily disable for diagnosis.
Try administrator execution and fullscreen-optimization changes
For graphics-related launch failures, use Rockstar’s launcher-specific path to GTAV.exe, then enable administrator execution and disable fullscreen optimizations in the executable’s Compatibility properties. Apply this to the actual installed executable, not an old desktop shortcut.
Separate local crashes from service or entitlement problems
Note whether the launcher itself opens and whether the failure occurs before sign-in, during game loading, or only when entering an online session. That distinction tells support whether to investigate the local executable, launcher communication, or the game session. Do not assume that a crash in one mode proves every mode is broken.
Reduce stuttering and uneven frame delivery
Stuttering has several possible causes, and Rockstar’s support material presents these as checks rather than a single confirmed cure. Make one reversible change, test a repeatable location or activity, and restore the prior setting if it has no effect.
Check the storage location
Rockstar recommends an internally connected drive for optimal data speed and cautions that an external drive may provide less consistent access. This is especially relevant when the game is streaming world data. Move or reinstall only after confirming that the destination has enough free space for the full installation and temporary update files.

Close overlays and capture tools
Disable in-game overlays, recording, streaming, and screen-sharing software for a diagnostic run. These tools can interfere with communication between game components and the graphics driver. If the hitching disappears, re-enable tools individually to identify the conflict instead of leaving all security or accessibility software disabled.
Check background resource use
Close unnecessary applications and inspect Windows resource use while the game runs. A system that is paging heavily or saturating its storage can stutter even when the average frame rate appears acceptable. Do not treat lowering every setting as proof of a GTA 5-specific fix; use it as an isolation test and change settings back one at a time.
Use Safe Mode when available
Rockstar’s general advice discusses testing game settings through Safe Mode when the game offers that option. Safe Mode can determine whether a previous graphics configuration is preventing stable startup. After a successful test, restore settings gradually so the first setting that reintroduces the hitch can be identified.
Keep the driver and game version aligned
Install the current game patch and graphics driver before judging performance. If stuttering began with a driver update, test the previous driver as Rockstar allows for ERR_GFX_STATE; document the version and change only one variable at a time.
Do not confuse minimum specs with smooth delivery
Minimum requirements establish a compatibility floor, not a frame-time target. A system can launch the game and still hitch when it streams data, especially if it is close to the memory, graphics, or storage baseline. Compare your configuration with the correct edition first, then use overlays, storage, and background-load tests to isolate the source before considering hardware changes.

| Symptom | First action | Next action if it persists |
|---|---|---|
| Code 134 or an outdated-version message | Update and verify through the owning launcher | For Steam or Epic, follow Rockstar’s reinstall procedure after verification fails |
| ERR_GFX_STATE | Update or roll back the driver; switch Vulkan to DirectX 12 | Use the GTAV.exe administrator and fullscreen-optimization settings |
| D3DERR_DEVICELOST | Update or clean-install the graphics driver | Collect diagnostics if the driver change does not resolve it |
| Crash with no code | Match edition requirements, patch the game, verify files | Check prerequisites, overlays, security software, and launcher logs |
| Intermittent stutter | Update software and test without overlays or recording tools | Check internal storage, background resource use, and Safe Mode settings |
Use the table as a branching guide, not as proof of a single cause. If a first action changes the symptom, keep that result in your notes. If nothing changes, move to the next branch instead of repeating the same reinstall.

What not to assume
- Meeting a minimum requirement does not promise a particular frame rate or eliminate stutter.
- Changing graphics settings cannot compensate for an edition whose operating-system, memory, GPU, or storage requirement is not met.
- Disabling security software, overlays, or firewall protection is a temporary diagnostic step, not a permanent recommendation.
- A reinstall is not automatically better than verification and can waste time when the underlying issue is a driver, launcher account, or compatibility conflict.
- Enhanced and Legacy figures must not be mixed when deciding whether an upgrade is necessary.
- Trying several fixes simultaneously makes it impossible to know which change helped or introduced a new problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does GTA 5 keep crashing on PC?
First identify whether you use Enhanced or Legacy, which launcher owns the installation, when the crash occurs, and the exact message. Then match the edition’s requirements, install the current game patch and graphics driver, verify files, and test without overlays or recording software. A graphics-specific code needs the driver and API steps described above.
How do I fix GTA 5 crashing on startup?
Verify the installation through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games, confirm DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ components, and check security or firewall blocks. For a graphics-related failure, locate the correct GTAV.exe, enable administrator execution, and disable fullscreen optimizations as Rockstar directs. Apply changes to the active installation, not an old shortcut.
How do I fix GTA 5 error code 134?
Code 134 can indicate that the game has not been updated. Update and verify files through the launcher that owns the game. If verification fails on Steam or Epic, Rockstar’s instructions describe reinstalling through that same store.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do I fix ERR_GFX_STATE?
Update the graphics driver, or test an earlier driver if the problem began after an update. In GTA 5, open Settings > Graphics > Advanced Settings and change Vulkan to DirectX 12, then save and restart. If it persists, use Rockstar’s administrator and fullscreen-optimization settings for the correct executable.
What causes D3DERR_DEVICELOST?
Rockstar associates it mainly with a graphics-driver issue or a conflict involving DirectX 3D and the display driver. Update the driver or perform a clean installation, restart Windows, and test before changing several other settings.
Why is GTA 5 stuttering even though it runs?
Stutter can have multiple causes. Confirm the correct edition requirements, install current patches and drivers, test on an internal drive, close overlays and capture tools, and check background resource use. Use Safe Mode when available and change one reversible setting at a time; minimum requirements are not a guarantee of smooth frame delivery.
Should I reinstall GTA 5 to stop crashes?
Not first. Patch the game, update or test the graphics driver, verify files, confirm prerequisites, and isolate overlays or security software. Reinstall only when those applicable checks fail, and use the same launcher or store that owns the installation.
What files does Rockstar need for a crash report?
Provide a DXDiag export made with dxdiag, an MSInfo export made with msinfo32, the relevant launcher.log (or prelauncher.log if Rockstar Games Launcher will not start), and the exact error or a screenshot. Also state your edition, launcher, Windows version, and when the failure happens.
Are Enhanced and Legacy PC requirements interchangeable?
No. Enhanced minimums list Windows 10 build 1909 or later, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB, and a 105 GB SSD. Legacy minimums list Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, older 1 GB graphics cards, and 125 GB HDD. Always compare the row for the edition you launch.
The Bottom Line
Use a measured sequence: identify Enhanced or Legacy and the owning launcher, compare the matching requirements, update the game and driver, verify files, then apply the specific ERR_GFX_STATE, D3DERR_DEVICELOST, or code-134 remedy. Test overlays, storage, prerequisites, and Safe Mode one at a time before reinstalling. If the crash or stutter remains, send Rockstar the exact error, DXDiag, MSInfo, and launcher logs so the next diagnosis starts with evidence.
