If GTA Online cannot find a session, loses the connection, or says Rockstar services are unavailable, check Rockstar’s live service status first, then confirm your internet connection works. If services are up, work through the checks for your platform: connection quality, NAT and router restrictions, and the relevant game and platform network ports. These steps help isolate likely causes; none guarantees a fix.
Start with the two checks that can save you time
Check Rockstar’s live service status
Open Rockstar Games Customer Support’s Service Status page and check GTA Online for your platform. The status snapshot dated September 25, 2026, at 7:21 PM UTC showed the service operational on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. That is a historical snapshot, not a statement about availability now; use the live page when troubleshooting.

If Rockstar reports an outage or scheduled maintenance, wait and check the status page again later. Changing DNS, opening router ports, or resetting network settings is unlikely to help with a service-side outage and can complicate diagnosis. If the service is operational, continue with your local connection and platform checks.
Confirm your internet connection works outside GTA Online
Check whether another device or app can reach the internet on the same home network. If nothing connects, troubleshoot the internet connection before changing GTA Online settings. If other devices work but the gaming device does not, focus on that device’s network connection. If only GTA Online is failing, continue below.

Rockstar’s PC connection guidance, last updated May 2, 2024, and Xbox One guidance, last updated January 7, 2025, list 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are Rockstar support targets, not guarantees against latency, packet loss, or failed sessions. A speed test that meets them does not rule out a connection-quality or NAT issue.
When checking your connection, look at whether it stays online over time, not only at one speed-test result. A brief test can miss intermittent drops. If possible, compare the gaming device with another device on the same network, and note whether the problem affects all internet use or only GTA Online. That distinction helps decide whether to troubleshoot the home connection, the gaming device, or the game’s access to online sessions.
Follow the branch for your error
“Rockstar Games services are unavailable”
First compare the message with the live service status. If GTA Online is down, wait. If it is listed as operational, check that general internet access works, then follow the connection and platform checks in this guide. Rockstar’s PC service-unavailable troubleshooting guidance, last updated July 18, 2024, also suggests testing another network, such as a mobile hotspot. Treat that as an isolation test: if GTA Online works on the alternate connection but not your usual one, the home router or internet service provider may be involved. It does not establish which one is responsible, and a hotspot is not necessarily a suitable permanent connection.

These errors concern reaching or matching with an online session. Check status first, then your connection and NAT. Rockstar says a restrictive NAT can limit which players you can connect with, so the problem may persist even when ordinary web browsing works. If you can test another network, compare whether the same account and device can locate a session there; that can help distinguish a home-network issue from a broader service problem.
A timeout does not, on its own, prove that the game servers are down or that the router needs a specific change. Use the sequence rather than jumping straight to port settings: verify status, check the connection, then review NAT and platform guidance. If the status page is operational and other online apps work, focus on whether the gaming device can establish the connections required for GTA Online.
“Session lost due to an unknown network error” or repeated kicks
When GTA Online repeatedly disconnects you, first determine whether the internet connection itself is dropping. If other apps also lose access, address the general connection. If they remain online, try a wired Ethernet connection if available, then check NAT, router restrictions, and the correct ports for your platform. The phrase “unknown network error” does not identify a single cause by itself.
Note when the disconnection occurs and whether it happens on more than one network. A problem that follows the same device and account across separate connections is different evidence from one that appears only on the home network. Neither result identifies the cause by itself, but it can keep you from repeatedly changing unrelated router settings.

Check Rockstar service status before changing local network settings. A failed save message is among the connection-related issues Rockstar’s guides address, but the wording alone does not prove whether the cause is a service interruption or a local connection problem. If services are available, confirm that your connection is stable and proceed through the platform checks. Do not assume that changing router settings will recover a save; avoid repeating network changes without checking whether the message or service status has changed.

Check connection quality before changing router settings
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the console or PC is using Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection to the router when practical. Rockstar’s PC and PlayStation 5 connection guidance recommends trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be problematic. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: if the wired connection works more reliably, Wi-Fi conditions may be contributing; if the same problem remains, continue with NAT and platform-specific checks.
If you cannot connect the device directly to the router, do not buy new networking equipment solely on the assumption that it will resolve a particular GTA Online error. First use the checks available to you—service status, general internet access, and a connection comparison if possible—to narrow the issue. If you already have a suitable Ethernet cable and can safely route it to the router, it is a low-cost way to make this comparison; it is optional, not a universal remedy.
Use speed figures as thresholds, not a diagnosis
Rockstar’s published targets for PC and Xbox One are 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. Meeting those figures does not show that a connection is free of intermittent drops, latency, packet loss, or restrictions on peer connections. Conversely, a low result is a reason to investigate the connection, not proof that it is the only cause of a failed session.

These figures are support targets, not a promise that a connection at those speeds will always find or hold a session. Upload speed matters as well as download speed, and the minimum upload figure is not the same as Rockstar’s recommended upload figure. If results vary from one test to another, repeat the comparison under similar conditions and keep the result in context with whether other services are also losing access.
Check NAT and router restrictions
Understand the PC NAT categories
Rockstar’s PC NAT guidance, last updated January 23, 2026, describes the compatibility limits this way:

A restrictive NAT can reduce the players or sessions your network can connect to. On PC, use Rockstar’s official procedure for resolving strict NAT errors rather than guessing at router settings. On consoles, NAT labels and the way they are displayed vary by platform; use that platform’s network test and official troubleshooting instructions. Do not assume the PC categories map exactly to every console menu.
Change one router setting at a time
If the platform check points to a restrictive NAT or blocked network traffic, consult the official GTA Online and platform instructions for your router and network setup. Router menus differ, and the available evidence does not establish one universal sequence of menu selections. Record the existing settings before making changes, change only what the relevant official procedure calls for, and retest GTA Online before making another change. This makes it easier to reverse a change that does not help.
Do not open every port you find in a search result or copy instructions meant for a different console or game. The objective is to follow the applicable Rockstar and platform requirements, not to make broad changes to the router. If you cannot identify the setting described by the official procedure in your router’s interface, pause rather than guessing; a mistaken change can make it harder to determine what caused the original problem.

Use the right ports for the platform
Rockstar lists the following GTA Online UDP ports: 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Those are the GTA Online ports; they are not a complete, universal list for every gaming device. PlayStation Network and Xbox network support guidance lists additional platform ports, so use the instructions for the platform you actually play on rather than combining unrelated lists.

Only adjust port or firewall settings when your platform’s official instructions call for it. The same port list should not be copied indiscriminately across devices, and opening unrelated ports is not a reliable troubleshooting shortcut.
The distinction between game ports and platform network ports matters: a console needs to communicate with its network service as well as GTA Online. Rockstar’s listed GTA Online UDP ports do not replace PlayStation Network or Xbox network requirements. Use the platform’s current instructions for its additional requirements, because those are not interchangeable between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Platform-specific checks
PC
- Check Rockstar status and general internet access. If services are up and other internet use works, continue with the PC network checks.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If possible, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet and see whether the session problem changes.
- Check NAT. Use Rockstar’s PC NAT guidance. Open NAT is compatible with any type; Moderate with Open or Moderate; Strict only with Open.
- Check the game ports. Rockstar’s PC connection troubleshooting lists UDP 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Follow the official procedure for applying those requirements to your network.
- Use an alternate-network test if the issue remains. Rockstar’s PC unavailable-services guidance suggests trying a different network, such as a mobile hotspot. If the game works there, the usual router or ISP may be involved; the test does not distinguish between them.
On PC, the NAT compatibility guidance gives a reason to investigate a Strict result when session matching fails, but it does not mean every session error is caused by NAT. Keep the status check and connection comparison in the sequence. Apply the official strict-NAT procedure only when that diagnosis is relevant, and retest before moving on.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Use PlayStation network checks and the GTA Online instructions for your console generation. Rockstar’s PlayStation 5 connection troubleshooting guidance, last updated July 5, 2024, recommends testing a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be a problem. The GTA Online UDP ports Rockstar lists are 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458; PlayStation Network guidance includes additional platform ports. Do not apply Xbox-only cache or alternate-MAC steps to a PlayStation.
For PlayStation 4, use the instructions that apply to that console rather than assuming that every PS5 menu or procedure is identical. The GTA Online game-port list is consistent in the cited guidance, but network settings and platform checks belong to the PlayStation procedures for the device you are using.
Xbox One
Start with Xbox network and GTA Online connection checks for Xbox One. Rockstar’s Xbox One guidance, last updated January 7, 2025, gives the same connection targets stated above: 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. Rockstar also lists GTA Online UDP ports 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458, alongside separate Xbox network ports. Use Xbox One instructions for platform-level network checks; do not assume that steps documented for Xbox Series X|S have identical menus.

Use Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S connection troubleshooting guidance, last updated September 18, 2025, for console network checks and port requirements. That guidance includes clearing the console cache and clearing the alternate MAC address as console-specific cleanup steps. Follow the current Xbox procedure for those operations; they are not steps for PC or PlayStation, and clearing them is not a guaranteed fix. Keep these Xbox Series X|S cleanup actions distinct from router changes. They apply to the console and should be performed using Xbox’s current procedure; they do not replace checking service status, the connection, or the platform’s network settings. If they do not change the result, return to the decision sequence rather than repeating them without new evidence.
Try later diagnostics carefully
Restart the router only after checking for an outage
Rockstar suggests restarting the router in its connection troubleshooting. Do this only after checking that Rockstar services are available, since a router restart cannot resolve maintenance or a service outage. If you restart it, allow the connection to return fully before testing GTA Online again. Avoid combining a router restart with several settings changes; otherwise, you will not know which action affected the result.
Change DNS only when the platform instructions call for it
Rockstar also suggests DNS changes as a later troubleshooting option. DNS settings are not the same thing as a fix for every session error, and changing them can make it harder to compare against your original setup. Record your current DNS settings before changing anything and follow the instructions for your platform. If the change does not help, restore the previous settings before trying another diagnostic.
Use another network to isolate the likely source
When available, testing with a separate connection can help distinguish a problem on the usual home network from one that persists across networks. Rockstar’s PC service-unavailable guidance specifically gives a mobile hotspot as an example. If the game works on the alternate connection, the usual router or ISP may be implicated; this result alone does not identify the exact fault. Treat the test as temporary diagnosis, not a recommendation to use a hotspot for regular play.
Make the comparison as controlled as practical: use the same gaming device and account, change only the network, and note whether the error changes. If the game fails on both networks, the hotspot result has not isolated the home network as the cause. If it works only on the alternate connection, focus next on the usual router or ISP and use their applicable support procedures rather than treating the temporary connection as a permanent fix.

This sequence separates a service-side problem from a local access problem and then narrows the local checks. It also prevents a common troubleshooting trap: treating “services unavailable,” “timed out locating session,” and repeated disconnects as proof of the same underlying fault. The exact message is useful context, but status, network behavior, platform, and the result of one-at-a-time tests are more informative than the wording alone.
When the error continues
Keep a short record of the exact error text, platform, whether Rockstar status showed an outage, and which checks changed the result. That information helps avoid repeating steps and makes a support request more specific. If the problem persists while Rockstar lists services as operational and other internet use works, use the official Rockstar and platform troubleshooting procedure for your device, especially before making additional router changes.
When contacting support, include whether the issue affects one game or all online activity on the device, whether Ethernet changed the result, and whether the same device could connect through another network. Include the relevant platform and the exact message rather than a general description such as “online is broken.” These observations do not diagnose the cause, but they make the troubleshooting history clearer.
