If a Halo 3 mod will not load or MCC crashes after you install it, first launch MCC with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) disabled. Then check that the mod is meant for Halo 3, follow its own launch instructions, and confirm any manual files are in the Halo 3 folder. If the problem began after an MCC update, check whether the mod supports your current build. These steps narrow down common causes; no single fix is guaranteed for every mod or crash.
1. Check what the mod is for and how it launches
Open the mod’s Steam Workshop page and confirm that it targets Halo 3, not another MCC game. Check whether it is intended for Campaign, Multiplayer, or Firefight. Some mods are launched from a particular mission or menu rather than appearing as a general game option. Follow the creator’s setup and launch directions; Halo Support also advises players to consult each mod’s description for its specific instructions: Halo Support: How to install and play MCC mods.
2. Launch MCC with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled
Halo Support states that mods will not work with EAC enabled. Choose the anti-cheat-disabled launch option before testing the mod:
- Steam: When prompted, select “Play Halo: MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services).”
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: Search Windows for and launch the anti-cheat-disabled MCC shortcut.
This launch mode supports modded Campaign and Custom Games, but disables public matchmaking. To play public matchmaking again, launch MCC in its normal EAC-enabled mode. See Halo Support’s EAC launch instructions.

3. If you installed files manually, check the game folder
Make sure the files are for Halo 3 and were copied into Halo 3’s folder, not another title’s folder within MCC. A community installation guide identifies the Halo 3 folder as halo3 and lists a wrong game folder as a possible cause of a crash after manual installation. That is a troubleshooting possibility, not proof of the cause in every case. Follow the mod creator’s exact file and subfolder instructions; do not assume all mods use the same layout. 4. Check compatibility with your current MCC build
If the mod stopped appearing or working after an MCC update, read the mod’s latest update notes and compare them with your installed game version. MCC updates can require creators to update mod metadata. For example, Halo Support’s July 2023 patch notes said creators needed to update a mod’s Max Game Version using Excession for it to appear on build 1.3251.0.0. That version is a historical example for that 2023 release, not the current MCC version or a value to copy into a mod now. See Halo Support’s July 2023 MCC patch notes.

5. Restore or verify the base game files
If MCC became unstable after changing or adding mod files, restore the original files before testing again. Halo Support recommends backing up core files before changing them and restoring the game files to their original state when mod-related problems arise. On Steam, use the installed game’s file-verification option:
- Open your Steam Library and right-click Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
Steam may replace or reacquire files it finds missing or changed. After verification, test MCC without the modded files first; then reinstall or resubscribe to the mod using its instructions. Halo Support’s guidance is at its EAC and mod troubleshooting article.

6. Gather details before asking for help
Halo Support says it does not troubleshoot mods and directs mod discussion to the MCC Steam modding forum. When asking the creator or community for help, include details that distinguish a launch-mode problem from an install or compatibility issue:
- Mod name and its Workshop page or other source
- Install method: Workshop subscription, Nexus, or manual files
- Platform: Steam, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app
- Your current MCC game build and the mod’s latest stated compatibility
- Exact error message, if any
- Whether MCC crashes before the mod appears, or after it loads
- Whether the problem persists with original game files and no mod installed
Use the MCC Steam modding forum for mod-specific discussion. Avoid assuming that a crash has the same cause as another player’s: the mod, install method, platform, game build, and timing of the crash all matter.
