First, identify when Hardspace: Shipbreaker crashes
The point of failure helps narrow the next test. These are starting points, not diagnoses: the same symptom can have more than one cause.

Check the official PC requirements
Steam lists the following requirements for the Windows PC version. They are the store’s stated minimum and recommended specifications, not a guarantee that every system meeting them will be stable.

Steam’s Hardspace: Shipbreaker listing gives the full requirements. The game-specific known-issues discussion says the CPU must support SSE 4.2, and that Windows emulators such as Wine are unsupported. If the processor lacks SSE 4.2, a graphics setting or reinstall will not add that hardware capability. On a laptop, also confirm Windows is launching the game on the dedicated GPU; integrated graphics may not meet the listed graphics requirement, though the available information does not establish a universal ban on integrated graphics. The game’s known-issues discussion documents the CPU and emulator caveats.

Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Hardspace: Shipbreaker and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and try launching the game.
Verification can replace missing or damaged installation files. It does not normally fix unsupported hardware, a faulty graphics driver, an unstable overclock, or a damaged personal configuration or save. Steam’s technical-issue support page for the game lists its support route.
Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Download the current driver from the manufacturer for your GPU: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart after the driver installation and test the game again.
If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, try the previous stable driver or use the manufacturer’s clean-install option. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities; the GPU vendor is the direct source for its driver.
Disable overlays, mods, and monitoring utilities
Temporarily turn off software that draws over the game, injects graphics effects, records gameplay, or monitors hardware. This is a diagnostic isolation step, not a confirmed Shipbreaker-specific fix.

- Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlay, and Xbox Game Bar.
- MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, RGB utilities, and hardware-monitoring tools.
- ReShade or other injectors, mods, custom ships, save editors, and trainers.
Launch the unmodified game. If it becomes stable, re-enable one item at a time and test again to identify a conflict. This does not mean that all mods cause crashes: Blackbird Interactive’s contact FAQ describes its personal-use mod policy and restrictions.

Try VSync or a 60-FPS limit for an early launch crash
If the game closes before its window appears, add a per-game profile for Hardspace: Shipbreaker in your graphics-card control panel. Enable VSync or set the frame-rate limit to 60 FPS, then launch again. The game’s known-issues discussion records reports from players who improved immediate launch crashes this way; it is a community-documented workaround, not a universal or guaranteed fix. Test windowed mode and one monitor
If the game opens but crashes around a display change, black screen, or fullscreen transition, test one variable at a time:

- Temporarily disconnect or disable secondary monitors, then launch on the primary display.
- If you can reach the settings, choose windowed or borderless mode and a standard resolution. Lower resolution, shadows, or detail as a test.
- Avoid dragging or resizing the game window while it is running. Close it normally after setting a stable display mode.
- Reconnect the second monitor and test again.
The known-issues discussion describes a launch problem associated with changing the game window during a previous session on some multi-monitor setups. This is a targeted test, not evidence that multi-monitor use is generally unsupported. Read the game-specific discussion.
Back up and reset graphics configuration
If the crash started after changing resolution, fullscreen mode, monitor selection, or graphics settings, reset configuration before considering more destructive steps. Close the game and Steam, then back up the game’s user-data folder if present. Rename the configuration file or folder rather than deleting it; relaunch to let the game create fresh settings, then reapply changes gradually. User-data locations can vary, so do not assume a particular folder exists.

The report mentioning Player.log is community evidence, so treat the path as a likely location rather than a guarantee. A separate player-reported edit to SkipSplashScreen in config.ini is an unverified fallback, not a first-line fix; back up the file before considering it. See the configuration-edit report.
Protect your career and test another save
If the crash happens only while loading a particular ship or career, do not assume the whole installation is broken. If the game still opens, end the shift by returning to the HAB before troubleshooting; the game’s known-issues discussion says this saves career-mode data. Then close the game and back up its save and configuration folder to another location.

- Try a different career, freeplay session, or save if available.
- If another session works, focus on the affected save or modded content rather than deleting all user data.
- Only after making a backup should you reset configuration or consider reinstalling.
Do not assume Steam Cloud can recover every damaged save; synchronization can also copy an unwanted state. The known-issues discussion includes the HAB save advice.
Check whether the PC is unstable outside the game
If other games also crash—or this game causes a freeze, blue screen, or reboot—treat it as a system-level investigation. These checks are general PC diagnostics, not confirmed Shipbreaker-specific fixes.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures while playing; stop testing if temperatures are unsafe for the hardware.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic or a trusted memory test.
- Review Windows Event Viewer for display-driver or hardware errors around the crash time.
- Confirm the installation drive has adequate free space, and test without background recording, browser hardware acceleration, or aggressive power-saving modes.
To collect system details, press Win + R, enter dxdiag or msinfo32, and save the report. These tools describe the PC; they do not repair the game.
When to contact support
Contact the support route listed on Steam’s technical-issue page when the crash persists after the relevant checks. Include:
