What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First work out whether “lag” means delayed actions, rubber-banding or disconnections—or whether the image itself stutters or freezes. For connection symptoms, check PlayStation service status, test the PS5 connection, compare Wi-Fi with wired LAN if possible, then restart the router and check for game and system updates. These checks help narrow down the cause; none is a guaranteed fix for every kind of lag.
Identify what “lag” looks like
Different symptoms call for different checks. Note what happens before changing settings:

- Network delay: actions take a while to register, or players appear to jump or rubber-band. Check the connection path first.
- Disconnection: the game loses the session or a player drops out. Check PlayStation service status and the console’s connection.
- Stuttering or freezing: the picture pauses or runs unevenly, even if actions are not visibly delayed. This may be a game or system performance issue rather than network latency.
These are clues, not diagnoses. A wired connection test, comparisons with other online services, and details from other squad members can help narrow things down.
Check PlayStation services and the PS5 connection
- Check service status. Look at PlayStation Network service status before making changes to your setup.
- Run the console’s connection test. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. If a connection problem appears, PlayStation’s PS5 connection error guidance offers troubleshooting options, including trying a wired connection for certain errors.
- If you use Wi-Fi, try a wired comparison if practical. PlayStation documents this setup path: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi is a factor; it cannot establish that the game server or your internet provider is problem-free. PlayStation also suggests moving the console closer to the router or reducing obstructions when troubleshooting Wi-Fi.
An Ethernet cable is optional if you need one to make the comparison. Treat it as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed Helldivers 2 repair.

Try Arrowhead’s basic PS5 troubleshooting
Arrowhead Game Studios’ PS5 troubleshooting guide recommends turning the router off for 5–7 minutes before turning it back on, and checking for Helldivers 2 and PS5 system software updates. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a promise that they will resolve every multiplayer delay.
Make one change at a time where possible, then try to reproduce the same symptom. That makes it easier to tell whether anything changed.

Separate a Helldivers 2 issue from a broader connection problem
Compare what happens across a few conditions rather than assuming one cause:
- Check whether other online services work and whether PlayStation has a reported service issue.
- Note whether the lag occurs in every mission or only particular missions.
- Ask whether squadmates notice the same delay, stuttering, or disconnect.
- Record whether the PS5 is using Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
These comparisons can provide useful context, but no single one proves where the fault lies. Helldivers 2 requires online play, supports up to four players, and has cross-play between PS5 and PC, according to PlayStation’s game information.

What Arrowhead’s current notices do—and don’t—say
Arrowhead Game Studios Support’s known-issues page, updated October 8, 2026, says: “Most crashes, performance, and connectivity problems are ongoing issues that are always being worked on and are not listed here.” The page also lists a specific case in which a Helldiver may die after landing on an Automaton fabricator when a player has high latency. The absence of a general PS5-lag entry therefore does not establish that a reported problem is caused by the player or is unknown to the studio. See the Arrowhead known-issues list.
Arrowhead’s version 7.1.0 patch notes, updated October 7, 2026, mention a rare case where a player could become unable to be reinforced under poor network conditions, and a fixed crash or network disconnect on levels with bunker caches. Those are specific reported bugs; the notes do not identify a universal cause of multiplayer lag or say that every PS5 report has the same source.

Use deeper system steps only when the symptoms fit
Arrowhead’s PS5 guide also covers Safe Mode cache and database operations, reinstalling the game, ventilation, and disconnecting external devices in the context of technical problems and crashes. Those steps are more relevant to crashes or freezing than to ordinary delayed network responses. If the picture freezes or the game crashes, consult the guide and follow its instructions; avoid starting with a reinstall for connection delay alone.
Report a persistent, reproducible problem
If the issue continues, report it through Arrowhead Support. Arrowhead asks players to provide as much information as possible, says screenshots and especially video are useful, and recommends clear reproduction steps for issues that happen more than once.
