How to Fix High Ping on a Valheim Dedicated Server

Find the cause of high ping on a Valheim dedicated server: separate one-player Wi‑Fi problems from server-wide issues, configure Steam ports correctly, understand Crossplay relay trade-offs, and test the route from outside the host LAN.

Fixing high ping on a Valheim dedicated server starts with one question: does the delay affect one player or everyone? A single affected player usually has a local Wi‑Fi, VPN, upload, or ISP-routing problem. If every player sees delay at the same time, investigate the server machine, its internet uplink, the Steam or Crossplay backend, port and firewall configuration, and the server’s geographic location.

Do not treat every hitch as ping. Network delay, packet loss, and simulation or frame stutter can look similar in Valheim but require different fixes. Measure the pattern first, then change one variable at a time.

1. Identify what “high ping” means in your case

Valheim does not provide a universal published millisecond threshold at which a server becomes “high ping.” The useful evidence is the symptom’s scope, timing, and repeatability. Record what happens before changing settings:

  • Does one player experience delayed movement, late hits, rubber-banding, or missed interactions while others play normally?
  • Do all players experience the same delay simultaneously?
  • Is the problem constant, or does it arrive in bursts when someone uploads, streams, or enters a busy area?
  • Does the game freeze visually while voice chat and other network applications remain responsive?

A measured latency increase and a low frame rate are different problems. Network delay affects the time between your action and the server’s response. Simulation overload can make the world update slowly even when the network route is healthy. Keep those observations separate throughout troubleshooting.

When only one player is affected

Start with that player’s connection rather than rebuilding the server. Congested Wi‑Fi, a background upload, a VPN or proxy, and an unfavorable ISP route can add delay or packet loss for one person while everyone else remains fine. Have the player connect over Ethernet if possible, stop cloud synchronization and large uploads, disconnect the VPN temporarily, and try a different internet connection such as a phone hotspot. If the problem follows the player across networks, the cause is probably local to that device or account path; if it disappears on another network, involve the original ISP or network administrator.

When everyone is affected

Simultaneous delay points toward something shared: the host’s uplink, the server machine, the route to the host, backend selection, router or firewall behavior, or a host location far from most players. Check those items before asking each player to change their own settings. This is a diagnostic heuristic, not a rule published by Valheim’s developer, so confirm it by comparing players and testing from another network.

2. Confirm whether the server uses Steam or Crossplay

The launch arguments determine how players reach a dedicated server. Find the script, shortcut, service definition, or hosting-panel command that starts the server and look for -crossplay. If that argument is absent, the server is using the Steam backend; if it is present, it is using the Crossplay backend.

Steam backend: direct inbound connection

Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide states that Valheim uses the configured port and the next port: “Valheim uses the specified Port AND specified Port+1. Default Ports are 2456-2457.” A Steam-backend server therefore needs Internet traffic to reach the host through the router and the operating-system firewall. The configured base port must match the router rule.

Direct connectivity can provide a short path when the host and players are well located, but it exposes every NAT, firewall, and ISP-policy problem between them. A server that works for a player on the host’s LAN has not yet proved that remote Steam connectivity is healthy.

Crossplay backend: relay networking

Iron Gate states that when the Crossplay backend is enabled with -crossplay, router port forwarding is not required. Crossplay uses relay networking, which can solve inbound-NAT and unreachable-router problems. It is not automatically a latency improvement: relay geography, congestion, and the affected players’ routes determine the actual path.

Use measured results for the players who are experiencing delay. If Crossplay allows players behind carrier-grade NAT or a restrictive gateway to connect reliably, it may be the practical solution even if its relay route is not the shortest. If a direct Steam setup already has a clean route, switching backends may add an extra hop.

Decision point Steam backend Crossplay backend
Launch setting No -crossplay argument Includes -crossplay
Inbound router forwarding Required for Internet access Not required, according to Iron Gate
Connection model Direct reachability to the host Relay networking
Main failure points NAT, port rules, firewalls, blocked upstream networks Relay route, relay congestion, backend compatibility
Latency choice Keep it when external tests show a good direct route Prefer it when NAT or firewall restrictions prevent reliable direct access; verify latency with the players

3. Correct the Steam port and router configuration

Do this section only for a Steam-backend server. Crossplay does not need inbound router forwarding for the Valheim server connection.

Find the base port

  1. Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
  2. Open the launch script or service command.
  3. Locate the -port argument. For example, -port 2456 sets the base port to 2456.
  4. Write down the exact value; do not assume the default if the script specifies another one.

The server uses that base port and the immediately following port. With the default base value, the pair is UDP 2456 and UDP 2457. If the script uses 2460, forward UDP 2460 and UDP 2461 instead.

Create the forwarding rule

  1. Sign in to the gateway or router that actually holds the public internet connection. A second router, mesh node, or modem-router combination can create another NAT layer.
  2. Give the server computer a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation or a static address configured according to the host operating system.
  3. Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
  4. Create a UDP rule for the base port and its successor, forwarding both to the server computer’s LAN address. You can enter them as one contiguous range if the router supports ranges, or as two individual rules.
  5. Save the configuration and restart the router only if its interface requires it.

Forward UDP, not only TCP. The rule’s external and internal port values should match unless your router documentation gives a specific reason to translate them. If the router reports that the WAN address is private or belongs to a carrier-grade NAT range, forwarding may not be possible from your home; ask the ISP for a public address or use Crossplay or another host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow the traffic through every firewall layer

A correct router rule can still fail if the server machine drops the packets. Check all layers that apply:

  • The operating-system firewall on the Valheim server must allow inbound UDP traffic for the configured pair.
  • The router’s own firewall or security profile must permit the forwarding rule.
  • A cloud or virtual private server must allow the same UDP ports in its provider security group or network ACL.
  • Security software must not be silently blocking the dedicated-server executable.

Steam’s support documentation warns that many university and business networks, as well as proxies, block ports required for Steam operation. If a player can join from a home connection but not from a campus, office, hotel, or managed VPN, the upstream network may be the cause. The player or network administrator—not the Valheim server—may need to change that policy.

4. Test from outside the host’s LAN

Ask an affected player on a different internet connection to join using the normal server address. Do not rely on a test from the same LAN as the server: some routers support NAT loopback and others do not, so a local result can hide an Internet-facing failure.

Use a simple comparison sequence:

  1. Have a local player connect and note whether the world loads.
  2. Have a remote player connect while the host watches the server console and router status.
  3. Repeat from a second remote network if possible.
  4. Compare connection success, join time, packet-loss symptoms, and in-game delay rather than looking only at whether the server appears in a list.

A local success with remote timeouts usually sends you back to the port, firewall, NAT, or upstream-network checks. A remote connection that succeeds but is slow for everyone points more toward geography, uplink saturation, relay or direct-route quality, or server load.

5. Apply player-side fixes when the scope is limited to one person

Replace congested Wi‑Fi

Test a wired Ethernet connection. If Ethernet is impossible, move closer to the access point, use the less congested band supported by the device, and avoid sharing the channel with large downloads or video uploads. A speed-test download number does not prove that Wi‑Fi has low latency; queueing and packet loss during an upload can create the delay Valheim exposes.

Stop competing traffic

Pause cloud-drive synchronization, game updates, livestream uploads, torrents, and security backups on the affected connection. Check other household devices as well. If ping improves immediately when an upload stops, configure bandwidth limits or quality-of-service rules on the gateway rather than changing Valheim’s server port.

Remove avoidable tunnels

Disconnect a VPN or proxy for a controlled test. A tunnel can send traffic through a distant exit location or a congested provider. If the VPN is required for the network, try another nearby exit region and compare the result; do not leave security controls disabled permanently without understanding the risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare another access network

Use a phone hotspot or another trusted connection briefly. If the same computer and game account perform normally there, collect the times and destinations of the bad sessions and contact the original ISP. If both networks show the problem, inspect the device, local software, and game installation before blaming the server route.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

6. Check the host’s uplink, machine, and location

Look for an overloaded home uplink

The host’s upload capacity matters because the server must send world and player-state updates to every connected player. A household upload saturating the upstream queue can increase latency for everyone, even when download speed appears ample. Stop backups and uploads during a test, then repeat the session. If the issue disappears, schedule those jobs outside play hours or apply an upload limit.

Separate CPU or simulation load from network delay

Observe whether the host machine is CPU-bound, swapping memory, or writing heavily to storage when the delay occurs. A crowded base, many active objects, or mod activity can slow simulation. Symptoms such as animation pauses, delayed world updates for every player, and a stable network route suggest a server-performance investigation rather than port forwarding. Lowering graphics settings on one client will not fix a server tick problem.

Evaluate geography

Physical distance and the number of network hops influence round-trip time. If most players live in one region and the host is on another continent, compare a server location nearer the player majority. This is a hosting decision, not a guaranteed reduction: an apparently nearby facility can still have a poor route or congested transit provider. Measure the affected players’ latency before and after any move.

7. Decide between home hosting and a managed server

Self-hosting gives you control over the launch arguments, world files, updates, backups, and network rules. It also leaves you responsible for public addressing, router configuration, firewall maintenance, power, and the quality of the home uplink. A managed Valheim host shifts those operational tasks to a provider and may offer a region closer to your group, but it introduces a recurring fee and provider-dependent limits.

Factor Home or self-hosted machine Managed hosting
Geographic placement Fixed to your home or chosen server facility Choose from the provider’s available regions
Network control Direct control of router, firewall, and uplink Provider controls perimeter networking; you use its panel and policies
Maintenance Updates, reboots, mod files, and recovery are your responsibility Some maintenance is automated, subject to the service’s terms
Backups You must create and test them Availability, retention, and restore process vary by provider
Cost Uses existing hardware and internet service, with their ongoing costs Recurring monthly charge; exact pricing is provider- and region-specific
Best fit Owners who need control and have a reliable public connection Groups blocked by ISP NAT, weak uplink, inconvenient geography, or maintenance burden

Before moving, verify the provider’s region coverage, version support, backup and restore controls, uptime terms, mod policy, player limits, and total recurring cost. Relocation can improve a route, but it cannot compensate for an incompatible game version or an unmaintained world backup.

8. Treat mods and extra ports as a separate investigation

Vanilla Valheim’s Steam requirement is the configured UDP port plus the next port. Community deployment documentation notes that some mods using remote procedure calls may need another port, such as the game port plus two. That is not a vanilla Valheim requirement.

For a modded server:

  1. Reproduce the delay with all client and server mods disabled, if the world can be backed up safely.
  2. If vanilla performance is normal, re-enable mods in groups until the problem returns.
  3. Read the specific mod’s documentation for required ports, synchronization settings, and matching client versions.
  4. Forward only documented ports and allow them through the same firewall layers; do not open broad port ranges as a guess.

Keep a separate backup before changing a modded world. A networking fix cannot repair a mod that creates excessive simulation work or incompatible state updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Use this symptom-to-action decision tree

  • Only one player lags: test Ethernet, stop uploads, disable the VPN for comparison, and try another network.
  • Everyone lags, including the host: check host uplink saturation and server CPU or simulation load, then inspect route geography.
  • Remote players time out but LAN players connect: verify Steam versus Crossplay, the base-port pair, router forwarding, and every firewall or security-group rule.
  • Crossplay connects but feels slow: compare relay performance with the players’ measured direct route; relay networking solves reachability, not every latency problem.
  • Only a campus, office, hotel, or proxy connection fails: ask that network administrator about Steam traffic restrictions.
  • Vanilla works but the modded server lags: isolate mods and follow the mod author’s port and performance requirements.
  • The screen stutters but ping is unchanged: investigate client frame rate or server simulation instead of changing router ports.

10. A safe order for making changes

  1. Record who is affected, when it happens, and whether the symptom is delay, packet loss, or visual stutter.
  2. Compare at least two players and, if possible, two independent networks.
  3. Confirm the launch backend and save a copy of the current launch command.
  4. For Steam, match -port to UDP forwarding of that port and the next one; for Crossplay, remove unnecessary inbound-forwarding assumptions.
  5. Check the host firewall, router firewall, and cloud security group.
  6. Run a remote test from outside the host LAN.
  7. Remove competing uploads and inspect host CPU, memory, storage, and simulation load.
  8. Only then compare a different region or managed host, measuring the same players and the same time of day.

Change one item per test and keep the result. That prevents a backend switch, router edit, and Wi‑Fi change from being mistaken for a single proven cure.

What the evidence can—and cannot—promise

Iron Gate documents the Steam port pair and the fact that Crossplay does not require router forwarding. Steam documents that managed networks can block required game traffic. Those facts explain why configuration and reachability failures are common, but they do not establish a universal “bad ping” number or promise a specific millisecond saving from a cable, router, backend, or hosting move. The correct fix is the one that improves the affected players’ measured route without introducing a new bottleneck.
