Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with a clean software baseline: install any SteamOS update, restart the Deck from Steam > Power > Restart, and close or disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode. Then check the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility label, test an appropriate Proton version, reduce rendering load, and move the game from microSD to internal storage if necessary. This order isolates the common causes without deleting files or changing several variables at once.
Use this order before changing advanced settings
A horror game that returns to the library, freezes during a loading screen, or crashes after reaching its menu can fail for different reasons. A title may need a different Windows-compatibility layer, exceed the Deck’s available rendering headroom, encounter a damaged installation or storage problem, or require an online check. Change one variable at a time and relaunch after each change so you know which step affected the result.

- Install SteamOS updates and restart. In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Power > Restart. Exit or disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode before testing again. Valve lists updating, restarting, and removing possible application conflicts as first steps for instability.
- Read the compatibility label. Open the game’s Steam Store page and find Steam Deck Compatibility. Record whether it is Verified, Playable, or Unsupported before forcing a tool or replacing storage.
- Test Proton deliberately. For a Windows game, or a game that fails with its default tool, use Library > select the game > Menu button > Properties > Compatibility. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version. If it fails, test another official Proton version and keep notes on the result.
- Lower the rendering load. If the game reaches a menu and crashes while loading a scene, reduce its graphics preset and individual graphics options, then repeat the same section of the game.
- Isolate storage. Move or reinstall a microSD-installed game on the internal storage and retest. A stability change makes the storage location a useful diagnostic clue.
- Check online dependencies. Test once while connected if the game uses a launcher, digital-rights check, or multiplayer service. Installed games generally work offline, but a title that requires an internet connection will not.
- Escalate with a complete report. If the crash remains, give Steam Support and the game developer the Deck model, SteamOS version, game build, Proton version, storage location, compatibility label, and exact failure point.
What the Steam Deck compatibility label actually tells you
The label is a starting point, not a permanent guarantee. Valve’s categories describe the expected level of configuration on Steam Deck, and ratings can change as SteamOS and Proton improve.
| Label | Meaning | What to expect when troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works by default on Steam Deck. | Begin with updates, a restart, and a clean test. A crash still warrants checking installation, storage, graphics load, or a service dependency; the label does not rule out a new regression. |
| Playable | The game works, but manual configuration may be required. | Expect to adjust controls, text-entry behavior, display settings, or the compatibility tool. Record each change so you can undo it. |
| Unsupported | Valve does not currently consider the title playable on Deck. | A workaround may exist, but there is no expectation of a complete, supported experience. Treat every Proton or settings change as an experiment rather than a guaranteed fix. |
Do not infer a universal result from another horror game. Two games can use different engines, launchers, anti-cheat systems, video codecs, or graphics features even when they appear to have similar system requirements. The label for the specific title and the behavior on your Deck are more useful than a general claim that one Proton release fixes every game.

How to change Proton without losing track of the working setup
When forcing Proton is appropriate
Use this branch when the game is a Windows title, when the default compatibility tool fails to launch it, or when an update appears to have changed its behavior. Valve specifically recommends trying the latest Proton version. Official Proton versions are the safest comparison because they are maintained as part of Steam’s compatibility tooling.
Exact Gaming Mode steps
- Highlight the game in your Library.
- Press the Menu button.
- Open Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available in the list and close the properties screen.
- Launch the game and test the same failure point. If it fails, return to the same menu and try another official Proton version.
Compare more than whether the first menu appears. A useful test checks launch completion, cutscenes, controller input, loading into a save, and whether the same scene crashes repeatedly. If a version works, write down its name and keep it selected until a game or SteamOS update gives you a reason to retest.
Forcing Proton has a specific pitfall: Valve warns that Steam may install the Windows version when a Linux version was previously installed. That can alter the files being tested and consume additional storage. Confirm which version Steam is installing before accepting a large download, and avoid changing the tool and storage location in the same test.

If the latest Proton version is worse
A newer tool is not automatically better for every title. Return to Properties > Compatibility, choose the previously working official version, and repeat the same test. The goal is a reproducible choice for this game, not a permanently “best” Proton version for the Deck as a whole.
Reduce graphics load when the game reaches a menu
A title that launches successfully but crashes while entering a level, loading a cutscene, or rendering a busy area may be exceeding its available graphics or memory headroom. Valve’s general stability guidance is to reduce graphics settings.
- Start with the game’s overall graphics preset, then lower individual options if the preset is too broad.
- Retest the same location or sequence after each change rather than judging stability from a different area.
- Keep a note of the settings that stop the crash; this makes it easier to restore quality gradually after an update.
- If lowering settings has no effect and the crash occurs at exactly the same loading step, move to the Proton, storage, and connectivity branches instead of continually reducing image quality.
Do not describe a graphics reduction as a permanent fix when it only avoids one scene. A stable menu is not proof that the entire game is stable; test a repeatable section that previously failed.

Use internal storage to diagnose microSD-related crashes
The diagnostic move
If the game is installed on a microSD card, move it to the Deck’s internal storage or reinstall it there, then run the same test. iFixit notes that moving games from microSD to internal storage may improve stability. If the crash disappears or becomes less frequent on internal storage, the common storage location points to either the microSD card or the internal storage as a potential fault.
This is an isolation test, not proof that every microSD card is unreliable. Keep the game files, Proton selection, graphics settings, and test sequence otherwise unchanged. A different result on internal storage is meaningful because the storage path was the variable you changed.
Replacing or preparing a card
Valve supports any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card for Steam Deck. Before installing games on a replacement or newly selected card, format it through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. Use the same game and repeat the test after installation; a card swap cannot repair unsupported Proton features or a game-specific compatibility limitation.

| Storage test | What changes | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| Original microSD | Baseline installation and current crash behavior | Record when and where the failure occurs. |
| Internal SSD | Storage medium and path | Improved stability points toward the original card or storage path; no change points back to Proton, graphics, connectivity, or the game itself. |
| Different supported microSD | Card, while retaining removable-storage use | Improvement implicates the original card more than the game’s compatibility settings. |
If both internal and replacement-card installations fail at the identical point, stop treating the card as the leading explanation and preserve the observations for support.
Check launchers, DRM, and offline behavior
Once installed, a game can generally be played offline unless it requires an internet connection. Some horror games still involve a separate launcher, a digital-rights check, account authentication, or multiplayer service. If the title immediately closes before its main menu, connect the Deck to the internet and launch it once. This determines whether an online dependency is involved; it is not a universal offline-mode fix.
- If it launches online but not offline, identify the required service and plan for that connection whenever you play.
- If it fails in both conditions, return to the compatibility and storage tests rather than repeatedly toggling offline mode.
- If a launcher window appears and disappears, capture that exact behavior in your support report instead of describing it only as “crashing.”
When a game worked before an update
An update can change the game build, its launcher, required codecs, or how it interacts with Proton. First establish whether SteamOS, the game, or the compatibility tool changed around the same time. Install pending SteamOS updates, restart, and retest with third-party Desktop Mode applications disabled before making deeper changes. Then check the current compatibility label and the Proton version selected for the title.

If the default tool now fails, test the latest Proton version and one other official version as separate trials. If the crash occurs only after entering a demanding scene, reduce graphics settings. If the title is on microSD, perform the internal-storage test. These steps do not identify which update caused a regression by themselves, but they provide a controlled comparison that support teams can act on.
Do not delete compatibility data, reinstall the operating system, or repeatedly reinstall the game as a first response when the failure began after an update. Those actions change several variables and can remove useful evidence. Escalate once the controlled tests are complete.
Match the symptom to the next test
| Observed symptom | Most informative next action | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| No window appears; Steam returns to the library | Check the compatibility label, then test the latest Proton version for a Windows title. | Whether the game was ever able to launch and which tool was selected. |
| Menu appears, then the game crashes while loading | Lower graphics settings and repeat the same loading sequence. | The exact menu or scene and whether the failure is repeatable. |
| Only the microSD installation crashes | Move or reinstall on internal storage. | Storage location, card used, and behavior on internal storage. |
| Launch fails only offline | Launch once while online and check for a launcher, DRM, or multiplayer requirement. | Network state and any authentication prompt. |
| Failure started after an update | Update SteamOS, restart, disable third-party Desktop Mode applications, then compare Proton versions. | Approximate timing, game build, SteamOS version, and selected tool. |
Prepare a useful Steam Support report
When the documented fixes do not resolve the crash, a precise report prevents support from having to ask for the same basics. Include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Deck model: LCD or OLED.
- SteamOS version.
- Game build or version shown by Steam.
- Steam Deck Compatibility label at the time of testing.
- Proton version selected, including whether the default tool was used.
- Installation location: internal storage or microSD, and whether moving it changed the result.
- Network state during the test.
- The exact failure point: before a window, at a launcher, at the main menu, during a cutscene, or in a particular level.
- Which steps you performed and the result of each one.
Send that information to Steam Support and the game’s developer. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to Steam Support when the documented steps do not solve the problem. Keep the working or failing Proton selection unchanged while support reviews the report unless you need to perform one clearly documented additional test.
A compact decision framework
Use the following rule when deciding what to do next:
- Never reaches a window: compatibility label, Proton tool, and online dependency are the highest-value checks.
- Reaches the menu but fails under load: lower graphics settings, then compare the storage location.
- Fails only from microSD: test internal storage and, if needed, a supported UHS-I class 3 or better card.
- Fails after a recent change: return to a clean baseline, record versions, and compare one official Proton version at a time.
- Still fails after controlled tests: stop cycling through random settings and escalate with the complete evidence list.
This process cannot make an Unsupported title fully playable, and a replacement card cannot supply missing Proton features. Its purpose is to distinguish a temporary software state, a compatibility-tool mismatch, excessive rendering load, a storage fault, and an online requirement so the next action is based on evidence rather than guesswork.
