The quickest fix is a controlled check: play another title, test Hulu on another device or network, compare your sustained speed with Hulu’s requirements, then refresh the app or browser. Those results tell you whether to clear data, update hardware, replace an unsupported device, or contact Hulu.

What Hulu error P-DEV313 actually tells you
Hulu does not publish a single root-cause definition or guaranteed remedy for P-DEV313. Hulu’s general troubleshooting guidance places this kind of message under “Buffering and other playback issues” and asks viewers to choose the behavior that best matches what they see. That guidance was published on November 28, 2025.

A third-party technical reference describes P-DEV313 as a playback failure that can involve the program, device, network, browser or app state, or Hulu’s service. Treat those as possibilities to test rather than as a diagnosis. Reinstalling the app immediately can waste time if only one episode is affected or if every device on your home connection fails.

Record what happens during each test. Whether the code follows one title, one device, or one network is more useful than the code by itself.
Start with a five-minute isolation test
- Play a different Hulu title. Use another episode or movie, preferably one in the same type of service you normally watch. Note whether it starts and continues playing.
- Try another device. Test a phone, tablet, computer, game console, smart TV, or supported streaming player. You only need one working comparison device.
- Try another network. If possible, connect the test device to a phone hotspot rather than your home Wi-Fi. A hotspot test uses mobile data, so stop playback when the comparison is complete.
- Write down the pattern. Mark the problem as title-specific, device-specific, home-network-specific, or broad across devices and networks.
Do not run every repair at once. A restart, cache clear, reinstall, and hardware replacement performed together removes the evidence that would have identified the original fault.
Use the result pattern to choose the next fix

Hulu also says viewers may be able to stream at reduced quality with 1.5 Mbps. That is a fallback condition, not a target for stable high-quality playback. A speed test showing a brief peak does not prove that the connection remains above the threshold during an entire program.

How to test and improve the connection
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls, and other streams on the same connection.
- Run a download test from the device that displays P-DEV313. If possible, repeat it at the time the error occurs.
- Compare the sustained result with 3 Mbps for the Streaming Library, 8 Mbps for live streams, or 16 Mbps for 4K.
- Power-cycle the modem and router: turn them off, wait briefly for the equipment to shut down, power them back on, and wait until the connection is restored.
- Run the test again. If results remain below Hulu’s target or fluctuate sharply, ask your internet provider to investigate the line, congestion, or equipment.
A connection can meet a speed target and still fail because of packet loss, wireless interference, or congestion. That is why the hotspot comparison matters: it changes the network path without changing the Hulu title or account.
Refresh Hulu on any platform
Close, reopen, and update
- Exit the Hulu player and fully close the Hulu app or browser tab. On a television or streaming device, return to the home screen rather than leaving the app suspended.
- Open Hulu again and retry the affected title.
- Install any pending Hulu update from the device’s app store.
- Install pending operating-system or firmware updates for the TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, console, or computer.
A suspended app can preserve a failed playback session. A current app running on outdated device software can also behave differently from a fresh session, so update both layers before reinstalling.
Clear cache where the platform provides that control
Cache labels differ by operating system. Use the device’s application-management screen and choose Hulu, then use a control labelled Clear cache or equivalent. Cache clearing should remove temporary files without changing your subscription. If the platform offers only a data-reset option, read its warning first because it may sign you out or remove local settings.

Uninstall Hulu, restart the device, reinstall Hulu from the official app store, sign in again, and test one title before changing other settings. Reinstallation is more disruptive than a restart or cache clear, and it cannot make an unsupported model compatible.

Fixing P-DEV313 on Amazon Fire TV
Hulu lists Amazon Fire TV among supported TV-connected device families, but support depends on the exact model and generation. Hulu’s supported-device article, published October 2, 2026, states: “Fire TV Stick (1st Gen) is no longer supported.” If that is your model, replacement with a currently supported player is the appropriate path; repeated reinstalls will not restore official compatibility.
Recommended Fire TV sequence
- Open Fire TV settings and check for device software updates. Install any available update and allow the stick to restart.
- Open the applications management screen, select Hulu, and choose Clear cache.
- Choose Force stop, confirm, and launch Hulu again.
- Retry the same title and then test a different title.
- If the error remains, uninstall Hulu, restart the Fire TV Stick, reinstall Hulu, and sign in again.
The labels can vary slightly by Fire OS version. An Amazon Staff response in a March 30, 2024 forum case involving Fire TV Stick 4K Max (first- and second-generation models) gave the same practical order: update the stick, clear Hulu’s cache, force-stop the app, and reinstall it.
A supported Fire TV Stick 4K Max may be a reasonable replacement when testing confirms that an aging, unsupported, or failing Fire TV device is the problem. It is not a universal P-DEV313 cure, and buying hardware before checking the title and network can solve the wrong problem.

When the error appears on a smart TV or game console
First identify whether the TV or console is the only device that fails. If Hulu works on a phone over the same home Wi-Fi, the account and network are less likely to be the immediate cause. Update the TV or console firmware, update Hulu, power-cycle the hardware, and clear the app cache if the platform exposes that option.

Check Hulu’s current supported-device list using the exact manufacturer, model number, and operating-system version. “Smart TV” is not one compatibility category; two televisions from the same brand can have different app support. If the model is no longer supported, use a supported external player or another supported screen rather than relying on repeated app resets.
When the error appears on a laptop or desktop browser
- Close all Hulu tabs and reopen one fresh tab.
- Install pending updates for the browser and operating system.
- Temporarily disable extensions that alter video playback, scripts, privacy controls, or network requests, then test again.
- Clear Hulu site data or browser cache using the browser’s privacy settings. This may sign you out.
- Try a second supported browser. If only one browser fails, the issue is likely local to that browser session or its settings.
Keep the comparison controlled: test the same title, on the same network, with the same account. If every browser and device fails only on the home connection, return to the network checks rather than repeatedly deleting browser data.

Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data for one short test. If Hulu works on cellular but not Wi-Fi, investigate the home network. If it fails only on the phone or tablet, update the operating system and Hulu, force-close the app, clear its cache where available, and reinstall it as a last app-level step.
Keep the device charged during testing and avoid judging the result while another app is consuming the connection. A successful short clip does not prove that a long live stream or 4K program will remain stable, so test the content type that originally failed.

Check whether the failure is title-specific
If one movie or episode triggers P-DEV313 while several other titles play normally, record the exact program, season, episode, and approximate time. Try that title on another supported device. A failure that follows the title is different from a failure that follows your television or home network.
Do not infer that your subscription is broken solely from one title. The available evidence does not establish that P-DEV313 always represents an account problem, and the code itself is not a statement that a title has been removed.
How to escalate to Hulu efficiently
After the controlled tests, use Hulu’s Help Center playback flow. Include details that let support reproduce the pattern:

- The exact code: P-DEV313.
- The title, season, and episode or live channel affected.
- Device manufacturer, exact model, and operating-system or firmware version.
- Hulu app version or browser name and version.
- Whether another title plays on the same device.
- Whether another device works on the same home network.
- Whether a phone hotspot or other network works.
- Your measured sustained download speed and whether the test was on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular.
- Which actions you already completed: restart, update, cache clear, force-stop, reinstall, and network power cycle.
This information separates a reproducible title problem from a device-only failure and prevents support from sending you through steps you have already completed.
A practical decision checklist
- One title only: test that title elsewhere and report the exact episode if it continues to fail.
- One device only: update the device and Hulu, clear cache, then reinstall.
- Home Wi-Fi only: run a sustained speed test, reduce traffic, power-cycle networking equipment, and contact the ISP if the result remains below Hulu’s target.
- Unsupported model: move to a supported device; software resets cannot add support.
- All titles, devices, and networks: collect the comparison details and contact Hulu because a broader service or account condition remains possible.
The code is most useful as the starting label for this process. The decisive evidence is where playback succeeds and where it fails.
