0x800700 is not a complete Windows error code. It is a prefix; the missing hexadecimal suffix and the place where the message appears determine the repair. For example, 0x80070002 usually indicates a missing file, 0x80070005 means access is denied, 0x8007000D points to invalid data or damaged Windows Update files, and 0x80070057 means an invalid parameter. Capture the complete HRESULT before changing permissions, deleting caches, or editing the registry.
Start by identifying the complete error
Windows can show the prefix in a short notification while the full value appears in the detailed dialog, update history, setup log, or Store package information. Treating every message beginning with 0x800700 as the same failure can make a missing-file problem look like a permissions problem.

- Reopen the error and select More information, View details, or the equivalent link.
- For Windows Update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and select the failed update.
- For a Windows upgrade, copy the complete code from Setup or its compatibility report, including any extended value such as
0x80070002 0x20009. - For Microsoft Store, AppX, or MSIX installation, copy the package deployment details rather than only the brief toast notification.
- Write down what was being installed, the Windows edition and version, and whether the failure occurred during download, verification, or installation.
Do not assume that a message containing 0x800700 is 0x80070005 or 0x80070057. The suffix is the first diagnostic decision.
Use the suffix and installation context to choose a path
| Complete code or pattern | Typical meaning in Microsoft documentation | Where it commonly appears | First manual action |
|---|---|---|---|
0x80070002 |
A required file or path cannot be found | Windows Update, upgrade setup, AppX/MSIX | Check the relevant update or package files and logs for a missing path |
0x80070005 |
E_ACCESSDENIED; the operation lacks permission |
Windows Update and servicing operations | Review administrator and TrustedInstaller permissions and inspect CBS.log or WindowsUpdate.log |
0x8007000D |
Invalid data; Microsoft associates update cases with damaged update files or cache contents | Windows Update | Run the troubleshooter, then rebuild the update cache if required |
0x80070057 |
The parameter is incorrect | Windows Update and AppX/MSIX deployment | Check the command, package metadata, or update parameters instead of changing access rights |
0x80070070 variants |
Insufficient storage for setup | Windows upgrade or installation | Free space on the system drive and remove unnecessary external installation media |
0x800700B7 0x2000A |
Background-process interference during setup | Windows upgrade | Close or temporarily disable nonessential startup software and retry |
C1900101 variants |
Driver-related setup failure | Windows upgrade | Update or remove the problem device driver and disconnect nonessential hardware |
The same base suffix can require a different remedy depending on whether Windows Update, Setup, or an AppX/MSIX package produced it. Use both columns—the full code and the context—before proceeding.

Windows Update: ordered troubleshooting
1. Restart and retry once
Restart Windows, reconnect only the hardware you need, and try the update again. A restart can release a file held by a servicing process and establishes whether the failure was transient. If the same complete code returns, continue with the matching branch below rather than repeatedly clicking Retry.
2. Run the built-in troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- Choose System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters in Windows 11, or Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters in Windows 10.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run (or Run the troubleshooter), and apply each suggested repair.
- Restart when prompted, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
This is the appropriate first check for 0x80070002, 0x80070003, 0x8007000D, and 0x80070057 update failures. Record any additional message before closing the troubleshooter.
3. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
For a cache or update-file failure—especially 0x8007000D—recreate the download folders. You need an administrator Command Prompt.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Stop the services that may hold update files:
net stop wuauservnet stop bits - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. If Windows reports that a file is in use, confirm that both services stopped and close any update-related window. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and start the services:
net start wuauservnet start bits - Restart Windows, run the Windows Update troubleshooter again, and check for updates.
Deleting the contents removes downloaded update packages that Windows can obtain again; it does not remove your personal documents. If the command reports that a service is not running, continue with the cache step and start it afterward.
4. Interpret the result instead of repeating the same reset
- If the code changes to a storage-related 0x80070070 variant, free space on the system drive before another attempt.
- If the code remains 0x80070005, stop deleting caches and investigate permissions and servicing logs.
- If the error is 0x80070002 or 0x80070003 after the reset, inspect the update history and setup logs for the missing file or path named there.
- If 0x80070057 persists, look for an incorrect parameter or damaged update metadata; a cache reset alone may not address it.
Fixing 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)
Microsoft defines 0x80070005 as E_ACCESSDENIED. During servicing, the denied operation may involve the Windows Update folders, the component store, or a service account rather than your normal user account.
Check elevation and account scope
- Sign in with an administrator account or obtain administrator approval.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from an elevated session and retry the update.
- Temporarily close software that injects into installers or locks system files. Do not permanently remove security software solely because an update failed.
Inspect the logs
Open C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log for Component Based Servicing entries and generate or open WindowsUpdate.log using the Windows Update diagnostic tools available on your Windows version. Search around the timestamp of the failure for 0x80070005, Access denied, TrustedInstaller, WinSxS, or SoftwareDistribution. The first denied path is more useful than the final summary line.
Verify the servicing locations without broad permission changes
Microsoft identifies missing TrustedInstaller permissions on C:WindowsWinSxS or C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and incorrect permissions on the Component Based Servicing registry area, as possible causes. Compare the denied path in the log with those locations. Avoid granting Everyone full control, taking ownership of the entire Windows directory, or importing a registry file from an unknown source: broad changes can weaken servicing and create a second failure.

If the log shows a damaged or manually altered component-permission configuration that you cannot restore confidently, stop before editing the registry and use Windows’ supported repair or upgrade recovery options. Preserve the CBS.log and WindowsUpdate.log for a technician or Microsoft support case.

Windows upgrade or Setup failures
Setup errors often include an extended code after the base HRESULT. Use the complete pair, not just 0x800700, in the installation error table and in searches within the setup logs.
Insufficient space: 0x80070070 variants
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review the available space on the Windows system drive.
- Remove temporary files through Storage > Temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall applications you no longer need.
- Disconnect removable drives that Setup is not using and ensure the installation media or download has room to complete.
- Restart and run Setup again. If the code changes, follow the new code rather than assuming the storage issue is still the only cause.
Missing setup files: 0x80070002 0x20009
This extended value indicates a missing file during a particular upgrade phase. Recreate or redownload the installation media, keep the media connected throughout Setup, and check the setup log for the exact path. Do not copy random DLLs into the Windows directory; the missing item may belong to the installation source, not the running system.
Background interference: 0x800700B7 0x2000A
Close installers, hardware utilities, backup jobs, and other nonessential programs. In Task Manager > Startup apps, disable nonessential startup entries, restart, and run Setup before re-enabling them. If the upgrade succeeds, restore startup entries one at a time so the interfering process can be identified.
Driver-related C1900101 variants
Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, storage adapters, and printers. In Device Manager, look for warning icons, install the current driver supplied for the exact Windows version and hardware, restart, and retry. A driver branch is different from a permissions branch; do not alter TrustedInstaller rights to solve a C1900101 failure.
Microsoft Store, AppX, and MSIX installations
Package deployment has its own interpretation of the suffix. Microsoft’s MSIX documentation maps 0x80070002 to a file or path that is not found and 0x80070057 to invalid arguments.
When the code is 0x80070002
- Confirm that the package source still exists and that the account running the installation can read it.
- If the package is on removable or network storage, copy it to a local folder and retry.
- Check the package deployment details for the missing path; a missing dependency or renamed file must be corrected in the package source.
- Do not substitute a similarly named file. Package manifests use exact names, paths, and versions.
When the code is 0x80070057
Review the package command, manifest values, architecture, and dependency arguments. An invalid parameter is not repaired by granting broad folder access. If the Microsoft Store itself is the front end, close it, restart Windows, and retry; retain the full deployment error for the package publisher if the same argument failure returns.
Checks that prevent a wrong repair
- Capture evidence first: save the full code, timestamp, update name or package name, and the relevant log excerpt.
- Separate missing files from denied access: 0x80070002 calls for path and source checks; 0x80070005 calls for permission and servicing checks.
- Do not edit the registry as a first response: registry permission changes are justified only when logs identify the Component Based Servicing permission as the cause.
- Do not use a generic cleaner or registry utility: deleting unknown servicing files can remove information Setup needs.
- Keep one change per attempt: restarting, resetting the cache, and changing permissions all at once makes the result impossible to interpret.
When the error still returns
After the context-specific procedure, retry once and compare the new complete code with the original. If it changes, follow the new branch. If it is unchanged, preserve the logs and note the exact step at which Setup or Update stops. A persistent 0x80070005 with a clearly identified denied path needs a permissions-focused repair; a persistent 0x80070002 needs a verified source or package; and a persistent 0x80070057 needs the invalid parameter or package metadata corrected. These distinctions are more useful than repeating a universal reset.
