If a Japanese Android game crashes, freezes, or will not open, restart your phone and update Android and the game first. If the trouble is limited to one game, check its device and OS requirements, then try force stopping it and clearing its cache. Before clearing data or reinstalling, verify that your save is backed up: either action can remove locally stored game data.
Start with a restart and updates
- Restart your Android phone, then try opening the game again.
- Check for an Android system update in your phone’s Settings. The exact menu path varies by device and Android version.
- Open the game’s Google Play listing and install an available update. Test the game after each step so you can tell whether anything changed. Google Play Help recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step: Fix an installed Android app that isn’t working.
Find out whether it is one game or a phone-wide problem
Open another app you use regularly. If several apps are crashing or unresponsive, focus on the phone and its system updates, and contact the device maker if the problem continues. If other apps work and only one Japanese game fails, prioritize that game’s compatibility information and publisher support. Google recommends contacting the developer when a problem affects one app but not others (Google Play Help).

Check compatibility and country availability separately
When the game says your device is incompatible
Open the game’s Google Play listing and check its supported devices and required Android OS information. Google says app compatibility is determined by each developer, not by Google Play: Can’t find an app. For a game distributed through a publisher’s own channel, check that publisher’s support page instead. Capcom’s general Android FAQ advises players to meet the specific game’s device and OS requirements and notes that operation outside them is not guaranteed: Capcom Android support FAQ.

When the game is unavailable in your country
Google Play country settings affect which apps and content appear in the store. That can help explain why you cannot find or install a Japanese game, but it is an access issue—not an established fix for a game that is already installed and crashing. Google explains country-based availability in its app availability guidance.

Try low-risk app resets
Force stop, then reopen
In Android Settings, find the game in the app list and choose Force stop. Reopen it and check whether the symptom has changed. Settings names and paths vary across phone makers.
Clear the cache
If force stopping does not help, return to the game’s app information in Settings and choose Storage or the equivalent option, then clear its cache. Cache clearing temporarily frees storage; cached files can accumulate again. Google’s instructions are in Fix an installed Android app that isn’t working.

Protect your save before clearing data or reinstalling
Clearing app data or uninstalling the game can erase locally stored information. Before either step, confirm that your save is linked to the correct account or backed up through the game’s cloud-save system, and make sure you know the login details needed to restore it. If you cannot confirm the save is recoverable, contact the publisher before proceeding. Google warns that uninstalling erases data saved in the app (Google Play Help).
Check connection and storage when the failure points that way
- Freeze during sign-in or online play: test a stable internet connection. An offline or interrupted service may affect online-dependent parts of a game.
- Download or update stalls: check that the phone has free internal storage and that the connection is stable.
- Play Store downloads or app updates fail: check Android and Google Play system updates as well. Android’s Japan guidance covers connection, storage, and system-update checks; its steps may differ by device and Android version. Know what Android 15 targeting policy does—and does not—mean
Google Play Console Help says existing mobile apps must target Android 15 (API level 35) or higher by August 31, 2026, to remain discoverable to new users on newer Android versions. This is a Play distribution and discovery requirement; it does not establish why an installed game crashes or prove that your phone is incompatible. Check the current Google Play target API requirements for policy details.

Contact the game publisher if one game still fails
If the problem remains after the relevant checks and other apps work, report it through the game’s official support page. Include enough detail to distinguish a device, compatibility, account, or service issue:
- Exact game title and version
- Phone manufacturer and model, plus Android version
- Your country or Google Play country, if availability or access may be involved
- What you were doing when it failed—for example, opening the game, loading a save, signing in, downloading data, or starting online play
- Any error text and the troubleshooting steps already tried
Google directs users to the app developer when a single app has trouble while other apps work (Google Play Help). A publisher can confirm game-specific requirements or whether a particular issue is known; general Android steps cannot determine that for every Japanese game.
