Jetpack cannot connect when WordPress.com cannot complete a request to your site. First verify that the site is publicly reachable, then test https://YOUR-DOMAIN/xmlrpc.php: a working endpoint displays exactly XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only. on one line. A 403, 404, timeout, blank response, or extra output identifies the type of block or server fault to fix before reconnecting Jetpack.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What the “site inaccessible” message means
Jetpack needs two-way communication with a publicly available WordPress installation. WordPress.com must be able to reach your site’s XML-RPC endpoint, while your server must also be able to make outbound HTTP and HTTPS requests to WordPress.com. A private site, maintenance page, password gate, DNS failure, invalid certificate, firewall rule, or overloaded server can break either direction.

The connection also depends on the WordPress REST API. Blocking XML-RPC or disabling the REST API can therefore produce the same broad Jetpack connection message even when the front page appears normal in a browser.

- The site resolves publicly to the current server and responds on its canonical HTTPS hostname.
- The certificate is valid for that hostname, includes a complete trust chain, and does not create a redirect loop.
/xmlrpc.phpexists at the actual WordPress installation path and runs PHP without warnings or fatal errors.- The JSON REST API is enabled and not replaced by a login page, maintenance page, or bot challenge.
- Firewalls, WAFs, CDNs, security plugins, and host policies permit legitimate WordPress.com requests.
- The web server can initiate outbound HTTP and HTTPS connections to WordPress.com.
- PHP has the XML extension enabled and enough workers, memory, and execution time to answer the request.
These checks also explain why a site can load normally for visitors yet remain inaccessible to Jetpack: a browser test covers only one path, while Jetpack tests specific endpoints and server-to-server traffic.
Fastest diagnostic sequence
- Check public availability. Open the canonical HTTPS address in an incognito window from a separate network if possible. Confirm that it resolves, presents the intended site, and does not show maintenance mode, a login wall, or a certificate warning.
- Check service status. Look at the official Automattic status page for an active Jetpack incident, then open the Jetpack Debug Tool and submit the complete site URL.
- Read Site Health. In WordPress, go to Tools → Site Health and inspect the connection tests and any details under failed WordPress.org or WordPress.com checks.
- Test XML-RPC directly. Visit
https://YOUR-DOMAIN/xmlrpc.phpin a browser. The successful response is exactlyXML-RPC server accepts POST requests only., with no blank line before it and no other characters after it. - Classify the failure. Record the HTTP status code, whether the XML-RPC response is exact, and whether the debugger reports an inbound block or an outbound connectivity failure.
Do not disconnect and reconnect Jetpack before these checks pass. Reauthentication cannot remove a host-level firewall rule, repair DNS, or make a missing endpoint appear.
Test and interpret xmlrpc.php
Expected result
A normal browser request to the endpoint returns one line: XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only. This is not an error. It means the file exists, PHP executed it, and the endpoint is waiting for an XML-RPC POST request from a client such as Jetpack.
Blank output or extra characters
A blank line, warning, notice, whitespace, HTML fragment, or other text can invalidate the handshake. Common sources include accidental output in wp-config.php, a plugin that prints diagnostics, a theme hook, PHP warnings, or a server rule that rewrites the request. Disable the suspected component temporarily and test again, while checking PHP and web-server logs for the first unexpected output.
404 or “Not Found”
A 404 means the request did not reach the expected XML-RPC file. The URL may use the wrong domain, protocol, or subdirectory; a rewrite rule may be intercepting it; a security product may be hiding it; or the WordPress files may be incomplete. Confirm the site’s exact installation path and canonical URL in WordPress settings before changing rewrite rules.
403 or another denial
A 403 generally means the web server, host, firewall, WAF, CDN, or security plugin deliberately refused the request. Inspect the blocking product’s event log and create a narrowly scoped exception for legitimate Jetpack and WordPress.com requests to xmlrpc.php. Avoid globally disabling security controls when an endpoint-specific rule will solve the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHTTP status codes and the next action
| Code | Typical meaning | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | Authentication, token, session, or allowlist rejection | Clear stale caches, verify authentication settings, and reauthenticate after access rules are corrected. |
| 403 | Permissions or a security rule refused XML-RPC | Review firewall, WAF, CDN, host, and security-plugin logs; allow the required Jetpack or WordPress.com request. |
| 404 | Endpoint missing, hidden, or addressed incorrectly | Confirm the domain, subdirectory, rewrite configuration, and WordPress files. |
| 408 | Request timed out while the network or server handled it | Ask the host about slow upstream services, DDoS handling, PHP concurrency, and request time limits. |
| 429 | Rate limit exceeded | Check host, WAF, CDN, and bot-protection thresholds and remove an overly aggressive rule. |
| 500 | Server-side, PHP, plugin, theme, or resource failure | Inspect PHP and web-server logs, then isolate plugins, themes, and resource exhaustion. |
| 502–504 | Gateway, upstream, overload, maintenance, or timeout fault | Involve the host and check upstream availability, proxy timeouts, and server load. |
The status code narrows the search but does not identify the exact product or rule responsible. Match it with the XML-RPC response and the time of the failure in your logs.

Remove firewall, WAF, CDN, and security-plugin blocks
Jetpack’s documented blocked-request notice says that WordPress.com requests to the site are being blocked, usually by a firewall or security rule. Typical interception points are a host’s network firewall, a web-application firewall, CDN bot protection, XML-RPC lockdown settings, country or IP restrictions, login-protection rules, and rate limits.
Use logs instead of guesswork
- Record the timestamp and your site’s canonical hostname from the debugger.
- Search WAF, CDN, web-server, and security-plugin events for that request time and the
xmlrpc.phppath. - Identify the rule ID, action, and reason before changing anything.
- Allow only the required Jetpack or WordPress.com traffic and keep unrelated protections enabled.
- Retest the endpoint and rerun the Jetpack Debug Tool after the rule is changed.
If the host or security provider manages the rule, send them the exact URL, status code, timestamp, and the request-block message. Reconnecting Jetpack does not repair a block. After the block is removed, Jetpack’s check normally clears within about a day, although the direct endpoint test should reflect the change sooner.
CDN caching and bot protection
Do not cache an error response for xmlrpc.php. Exclude the endpoint from page caching where your provider requires it, and ensure bot challenges are not presented to server-to-server requests. A challenge page can look like a successful HTTP response to a browser while still preventing Jetpack from completing its request.

Fix outbound HTTP and HTTPS failures
Inbound access can be healthy while the server is unable to contact WordPress.com. The debugger may identify this with labels such as failed_test__outbound_http or failed_test__outbound_https. This is a host-network problem, not an XML-RPC response problem.
- Give the host the exact failed-test label and the time it occurred.
- Ask whether outbound TCP connections for HTTP and HTTPS are permitted from the web server.
- Have the host check egress firewall rules, DNS resolution from the server, proxy requirements, and certificate inspection.
- Ask whether an abuse-prevention policy, request quota, or temporary block is affecting WordPress.com destinations.
- After the host confirms egress access, update Jetpack if an update is available, rerun the debugger, and inspect the Site Health details for any remaining “Could not reach WordPress.org” message.
Do not assume that allowing visitors into the site also allows the server to make outbound connections; many hosting environments control those directions separately.
Check DNS, HTTPS, PHP, and server capacity
DNS and canonical URL
Verify that the domain resolves to the current server from public DNS and that both the site URL and WordPress address use the intended hostname and scheme. A recent migration, changed nameserver, stale record, or incorrect subdirectory can send Jetpack to an old or nonexistent installation.
SSL certificate and HTTPS redirects
The certificate must be valid, complete, and issued for the hostname Jetpack uses. Check the entire chain, expiration, hostname coverage, and redirect behavior. A redirect loop between HTTP and HTTPS, or a certificate that works only in one browser, can prevent server-to-server verification.

PHP and XML support
Confirm that the PHP XML extension is enabled and that the site is running a supported PHP configuration for its WordPress version and plugins. Review the PHP error log for fatal errors, memory exhaustion, or warnings emitted before the XML-RPC response.
Capacity and concurrency
Slow 408 responses and 502–504 errors often appear when PHP workers, CPU, memory, database connections, or upstream proxy limits are exhausted. Ask the host whether PHP concurrency limits, DDoS handling, or process queues affected the request time. A temporary increase in capacity may restore access, but the underlying load or plugin fault still needs investigation.
Compare similar-looking causes
When two explanations seem plausible, compare these six observations rather than changing several settings at once:
- HTTP code: 403 and 429 point toward policy enforcement, while 500 and 502–504 point toward application or upstream capacity.
- Endpoint body: the exact one-line XML-RPC response indicates a functioning endpoint; blank, HTML, or warning output indicates interference.
- Direction: a failed inbound XML-RPC request requires WAF or endpoint investigation; a failed outbound test requires host egress investigation.
- Scope: if only Jetpack fails, inspect endpoint rules; if the front page and REST API also fail, start with DNS, TLS, and hosting availability.
- Recent changes: migrations, DNS edits, certificate renewals, plugin updates, and new CDN rules often identify the starting point.
- Timing: intermittent failures suggest rate limits, PHP worker exhaustion, scheduled maintenance, or proxy timeouts rather than a permanently missing file.
Temporarily isolate plugins and themes
Security, maintenance-mode, minification, authentication, and XML-RPC-blocking plugins can alter or deny the endpoint. A theme or custom drop-in can also emit output before WordPress handles the request.

- Record the active plugins, theme, and recent changes so they can be restored accurately.
- Temporarily disable the suspected security, maintenance, optimization, or XML-RPC-related plugin.
- Retest
/xmlrpc.phpand the Jetpack debugger. - If the problem remains, test with a default WordPress theme and check for must-use plugins or host-level rules that ordinary plugin deactivation does not disable.
- Re-enable components one at a time, testing after each change, until the offending rule or component is identified.
Use a staging copy when possible. If the production site must be used, make one controlled change at a time and keep a rollback path.
Keep the REST API available
Jetpack uses both XML-RPC and the WordPress JSON REST API. A site can return the correct XML-RPC line and still fail if the REST API is disabled, restricted to logged-in users, or blocked by an authentication policy.
Check whether a security plugin, server rule, or custom authentication layer denies REST requests. If authentication is enforced, follow Jetpack’s documented namespace allowlist rather than opening every API route. Test the API after applying the allowlist and confirm that no maintenance or challenge page replaces its JSON response.

Clear stale caches and tokens
After correcting the endpoint, security, DNS, or network fault, purge page, object, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches that may still contain a 401, 403, or maintenance response. A missing-secret or stale-token message can persist until cached connection data is removed.

Use the symptom to choose the right branch
- Front page fails in an incognito window: resolve DNS, HTTPS, hosting, maintenance mode, or server availability before examining Jetpack.
- Front page works but XML-RPC is 403: investigate WAF, CDN, host, and security-plugin rules.
- XML-RPC is 404: verify the exact domain and subdirectory, rewrites, and WordPress files.
- XML-RPC shows blank or extra output: inspect
wp-config.php, PHP warnings, plugins, themes, and custom code. - XML-RPC is correct but outbound tests fail: ask the host to permit server egress over HTTP and HTTPS.
- Intermittent 408, 429, or 5xx responses: correlate timestamps with rate limits, PHP worker usage, resource graphs, proxy logs, and scheduled maintenance.
- Everything passes but Jetpack remains disconnected: clear stale caches or tokens, then perform one clean disconnect and reconnect.
What to send your host or security provider
A precise escalation avoids a generic “Jetpack is broken” response. Include:
- The complete canonical HTTPS site URL and the exact
/xmlrpc.phpURL tested. - The observed HTTP status code and the complete response text, including whether it was blank or contained extra output.
- The Jetpack Debug Tool result and any Site Health error labels.
- The UTC timestamp of each test and whether the request was made before or after a rule change.
- Whether a CDN, WAF, firewall, security plugin, maintenance mode, recent migration, DNS change, or SSL renewal is involved.
- For outbound failures, the labels
failed_test__outbound_httporfailed_test__outbound_httpswhen shown.
Ask the provider to verify both directions: acceptance of legitimate WordPress.com requests to XML-RPC and outbound HTTP/HTTPS access from the server to WordPress.com. Request the blocking rule ID or log entry if they deny that a block exists. Managed WordPress hosting or a provider with WordPress firewall support can handle these checks when you do not control the WAF or server network.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Do not treat the normal “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” line as a failure.
- Do not whitelist every visitor or disable the entire firewall when an endpoint-specific exception is sufficient.
- Do not test only the home page; endpoint and outbound checks can fail independently.
- Do not leave a maintenance mode, password gate, bot challenge, or cached error active while testing.
- Do not reconnect repeatedly; repeated attempts can trigger rate limits and obscure the original event.
- Do not edit rewrite rules or configuration files without a backup and a rollback plan.
Prevent a repeat failure
- Keep WordPress, Jetpack, plugins, themes, PHP, and the host’s certificate configuration current.
- Document any XML-RPC, REST, bot-protection, rate-limit, or country-restriction rules before changing them.
- Exclude connection endpoints from inappropriate page caching and challenge pages.
- Monitor certificate expiration, DNS changes, server resource limits, and outbound firewall policies.
- After a migration or domain change, test the canonical HTTPS URL, XML-RPC response, REST API, and outbound connectivity before reconnecting integrations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can Jetpack not connect when my website opens normally?
A browser only proves that the front page is reachable. Jetpack also needs XML-RPC, the REST API, valid HTTPS, and outbound server access to WordPress.com. A WAF, security plugin, DNS mismatch, or blocked egress connection can affect Jetpack alone.
What should /xmlrpc.php display?
Open the canonical HTTPS URL for the endpoint. A healthy response is exactly “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” on one line, with no blank lines, warnings, HTML, or other characters.
Is a 403 always caused by Jetpack?
No. A 403 is usually issued by a host firewall, WAF, CDN, security plugin, permissions rule, or rate-protection policy. Check the product’s event log and create a narrow exception for legitimate WordPress.com requests.

What does a 404 on xmlrpc.php mean?
The endpoint is missing, hidden, rewritten, or addressed with the wrong domain, protocol, or subdirectory. Verify the canonical URL, installation path, rewrite rules, and WordPress files.
How do I fix failed_test__outbound_http or failed_test__outbound_https?
Ask your host to permit outbound HTTP and HTTPS from the web server to WordPress.com. Have them check egress firewalls, DNS resolution, proxy requirements, certificate inspection, quotas, and abuse-prevention policies.
Should I disable my security plugin to reconnect Jetpack?
Only temporarily and with a rollback plan. First identify the blocking rule in logs; an endpoint-specific allowlist is safer than disabling all security controls. Re-enable the plugin and test after each change.
Why does reconnecting Jetpack not solve the error?
Reconnection refreshes authentication but cannot repair DNS, SSL, a missing endpoint, a WAF block, disabled REST API, or blocked outbound traffic. Correct those conditions first, then disconnect once and reconnect.
How long does Jetpack take to recognize a removed block?
The direct XML-RPC test should change as soon as the block is removed. Jetpack’s blocked-request check normally clears within about a day, so rerun the debugger after the provider confirms the rule change.
The Bottom Line
Make the site publicly reachable, confirm the exact XML-RPC response, keep the REST API enabled, and determine whether the failure is inbound or outbound. Use the HTTP code and logs to correct WAF, CDN, DNS, SSL, PHP, capacity, or host-network problems. Purge stale caches, then reconnect Jetpack once all checks pass.
