There is no confirmed universal fix for Knock on the Coffin Lid crashing on PC. What to try depends on when it fails: wait through an unusually long first launch, check for current guidance after an update, and protect your local game data before changing settings or save files. The reported fixes are individual player experiences, not guaranteed solutions.

First, identify when the crash happens

  • First launch or “Please stand by” screen: give the game time to load without repeatedly clicking. A developer said in an August 2024 Steam Community reply that the very first launch may take longer than usual and advised players not to press buttons. That guidance applies to a slow initial load, not repeated crashes on later launches. Read the discussion.
  • It began after an update: check RedBoon’s current announcements or support guidance before changing versions or files. A crash following a patch may need a developer fix rather than a local setting change.
  • It crashes while loading a campaign or after prior successful launches: save and settings data may be worth investigating, but back up the local folder first. Player reports of changing local data are anecdotal.

Try low-risk steps before changing local data

1. Let a slow first launch finish

If this is the first time the game has launched, wait at the loading screen instead of clicking repeatedly. If the game has crashed on several launches, this historical first-launch advice is unlikely to explain the recurring failure.

2. Check the game files through Steam

In your Steam Library, right-click Knock on the Coffin Lid, open Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. This checks the installation for damaged or missing files. It is a reasonable diagnostic step, but one player in a Steam discussion said file verification did not stop their crashes, so do not treat it as a proven fix.

3. Check for current post-update instructions

In October 2024, RedBoon responded to a post-update failure by saying it was investigating and asking affected players to send game files and logs from C:Users(your PC name)AppDataLocalLowRedBoonKnock. The developer also described a temporary Steam Beta rollback to version 1.0973 for that specific incident. That is historical guidance: the available report does not establish that this beta remains available or is appropriate for current crashes. Do not switch to an older version unless RedBoon currently recommends it for your issue. Read the October 2024 discussion.

Back up saves before testing local settings

One player reported that moving the entire local game-data folder aside allowed the game to launch; another said removing volume entries from DefaultSettings.json helped. These are separate player observations, not developer-confirmed causes or generally safe fixes. Moving or editing files can reset settings or put local progress at risk.

  1. Close the game and Steam.
  2. Open File Explorer and enter %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowRedBoon in the address bar.
  3. Copy the Knock folder to a separate safe location, such as your Desktop or an external backup. Keep the original backup untouched.
  4. Only then, if you choose to test the reported workaround, rename the original Knock folder (for example, to Knock-backup) and try launching the game. This may cause the game to create fresh local data; it is not a guaranteed fix.
  5. If the test does not help, close the game and restore the original folder name and contents. Avoid deleting the backup or overwriting it with newly generated files.

If you are unsure which files contain your saves, do not delete or edit them. Ask RedBoon for instructions and include the symptoms and logs rather than experimenting with individual files.

Compare your PC with Steam’s listed minimum requirements

Steam lists these minimum Windows requirements for the game: the Steam store page.

Component Steam-listed minimum
Processor and operating system 64-bit processor and operating system
Memory 4 GB RAM
Graphics Graphics card with DX10 support
DirectX Version 10
Storage 13 GB available space

These are the game’s listed minimums, not a crash diagnosis. Meeting them does not rule out a software or game-data problem, while falling short does not identify which component is responsible. Steam separately notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024; do not interpret an older OS listed for a game as confirmation that the current Steam client supports it.

Send RedBoon useful crash details

If the crash continues, use the game’s bug-report option when available, or follow the support contact shown on the current Steam listing. Include when the crash occurs, whether it started after an update, what troubleshooting steps you tried, and the LocalLow game files/logs if requested. RedBoon asked players in its October 2024 response to provide files from the Knock folder; check current developer guidance before sending data or using an email address from an older discussion.

Useful details to include:

  • Whether this is the first launch or a recurring failure.
  • The screen or action immediately before the crash, such as “Please stand by” or loading a campaign.
  • Whether the problem started after a game update.
  • Your Windows version and whether your PC meets the Steam-listed minimums.
  • Any steps already tried, plus logs or files requested by the developer.

What the reports do—and do not—establish

A Steam Community report describes Windows 10 crashes with Knock.exe and UnityPlayer.dll named in the Windows fault report. The player said verifying files, disabling the Steam overlay and cloud, and changing window mode did not resolve the issue; moving the local game-data folder reportedly did. A separate player reported that editing volume entries helped. Those accounts can suggest what to investigate, but they do not prove a root cause or show that the same steps will work for other players. See the player reports and developer reply.
