If your laptop camera or microphone is missing, blocked, or not working in a game or app, check the laptop’s physical controls first, then test another app, review system and app permissions, and confirm the correct device is selected. These checks help isolate whether the problem is a setting, an app, a driver, or the hardware.
Start with the laptop and the capture device
Before changing software settings, check whether the camera or microphone is physically disabled. Some laptops have a camera shutter, side switch, or dedicated camera key; the control may be a function-key combination. Check the laptop’s labels or manual if the control is not obvious. For a headset microphone, make sure its mute switch is off and that the headset is connected properly. Chromebook models may also have physical camera or microphone switches.
If you are troubleshooting an external USB webcam or microphone, unplug and reconnect it, try another port if available, and test it on another device. A device that works elsewhere may point to a laptop port, driver, or settings issue rather than a fault in the accessory.
Find out whether the problem affects one app or the whole laptop
Test the camera in Windows
Open Start > Camera. If the built-in camera works in the Camera app but not in a game, browser, or meeting app, focus on that app’s selected device and permissions rather than treating the camera as universally broken. Microsoft recommends this distinction in its Windows camera troubleshooting guidance.

Check the selected device in the app or browser
An app can be allowed to use a camera or microphone but still be set to use the wrong one. Open the app’s audio or video settings and select the laptop’s intended camera and microphone. In Chrome, check the camera or microphone selected for the site as well as whether the site is allowed. After changing browser permissions, reload the page or restart Chrome.
Allow access in the operating system
Windows camera permissions
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera.
- If the affected software is a desktop program, also enable Let desktop apps access your camera. Store apps may have individual access toggles.
- Reopen the affected app and test again.
If a permission setting is greyed out or says it is managed, your school or workplace administrator may control it. Ask that administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy. For further steps, see Microsoft’s camera guidance.

Windows microphone permissions and input test
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Enable device access and app access; enable desktop-app access when the affected program is a desktop app.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended input device.
- Use the input test to check whether Windows receives sound. Check the headset’s mute switch and connection if the level stays inactive.
Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting instructions also recommend checking drivers if Windows does not detect the input device.
Chrome site permissions
- In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
- Choose Camera or Microphone, then allow the affected site.
- Confirm that Chrome has the intended device selected and that Windows or macOS also allows access.
- Reload the site or restart Chrome and test again.
Browser permissions are separate from operating-system permissions, so both must allow access. Work or school Chrome settings may be managed by an administrator. See Google Chrome Help for Chrome’s camera and microphone controls.

Check macOS or Chromebook settings
Mac camera
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow the affected app.
- Check Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Restrictions for camera restrictions.
- If macOS asks you to quit and reopen an app after changing access, do so. Install available macOS updates and test again.
Apple says Apple silicon users should restart if the built-in camera is not working. Persistent camera failure or a flashing green camera indicator may require service. Apple’s support page, published March 27, 2026, gives additional steps: If the built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac.
Chromebook camera and microphone
- Open Settings > Privacy and security > Privacy controls.
- Enable device access for the camera or microphone and allow the individual app.
- For a website, check its Chrome site permission; for an Android app, check the app permission.
- Refresh the page or app after changing access.
A Chromebook’s device-wide privacy control can block access even when an individual app is allowed. Google explains the separate controls in Chromebook camera, microphone, and location settings.

If the camera or microphone is still not detected
- Restart the laptop. This can clear a temporary device or app failure.
- Check for driver updates. On Windows, update the camera or audio driver; if Windows still does not detect the microphone, Microsoft documents driver reinstallation as a later step.
- Check security software. A security product may block camera access. Review its camera or privacy controls.
- Update macOS. Apple recommends keeping software current when resolving built-in camera problems.
- Escalate when the failure crosses apps. If the built-in device remains absent after permissions, restart, and relevant software or driver steps, contact the laptop manufacturer or an authorized service provider. On a Mac, follow Apple’s service guidance if the camera remains unavailable.
Choose a workaround or pursue a permanent repair
If you need to record or join a call immediately, a compatible external USB webcam or microphone may work as a separate capture source. Compatibility depends on the laptop’s available ports and operating-system support; test the accessory before relying on it. If the built-in camera remains unavailable, manufacturer or authorized service support is the path to diagnose and repair the laptop itself. The right choice depends on whether you need an immediate workaround or a permanent fix.
