To show an animated GIF when someone tips your stream, configure the tip alert with the service that receives the tip, add that service’s alert widget to the scene you broadcast, then save and test it. In Streamlabs, for example, choose the Tips alert, select a GIF, add the Alert Box to Streamlabs Desktop or another program as a browser source, and trigger a test before going live.
Set up a donation GIF with Streamlabs
Streamlabs calls these viewer payments “tips” in its alert settings. Its Alert Box supports GIF images, and the alert must be both configured in Streamlabs and present in the scene your streaming software sends out. Labels can change, so use the current Alert Box settings if your interface differs.
- Connect the account and open Alert Box settings. Sign in to Streamlabs, link the streaming platform or account needed for the events you want, and open the Alert Box configuration. Streamlabs’ alert setup guide describes the available event and widget workflow.
- Choose the Tips event and customize it. Select the tip alert, then set its image to your GIF and adjust the alert text, sound, and other available options. The documented image formats include .gif, PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, WebM, and MP4. The documentation does not establish a universal maximum GIF size or duration, so check the current service limits for your account.
- Save the settings. Do not leave the configuration page without saving your changes.
- Add a variation if you want different GIFs for different tip amounts. Create an alert variation, set a condition such as a minimum tip amount, and assign the GIF and other settings for that variation. Streamlabs’ guide illustrates an alert for tips of $10 or more; that is an example, not a required threshold.
- Put the Alert Box in the scene. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box source. In other compatible streaming software, copy the Streamlabs widget URL and add it as a Browser Source. Place and size it where it will be visible without covering important game or stream content.
- Test the alert in the scene you will broadcast. Use the dashboard’s test alert and check the animation, text, audio, timing, and placement. Confirm the widget is visible in the active scene—not merely in a scene you are not using.
Streamlabs’ example guide describes assigning a GIF to a $10-and-up tip variation with the line: “Now when someone tips $10 or more, my viewers will see a gif of my dog holding some money.” It is an illustrative configuration, not a promise about every account or platform.
Make sure the alert matches the way viewers tip
For Streamlabs tip alerts, viewers need to use your Streamlabs donation link. Streamlabs documents that donations made through a different route may not trigger those alerts. Share the matching link if you want tips to arrive through that workflow, and consult Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance if an expected tip does not appear.

Tips or donations are not interchangeable with Twitch Bits, YouTube Super Chats, subscriptions, or charity fundraising. These are distinct event types in provider settings. Choose the event that matches what viewers are actually doing, and check current platform and payment availability for your region and account.

Keep the payment destination and alert source consistent: StreamElements tips should use the StreamElements tipping route and its alertbox; Streamlabs tips should use the Streamlabs route and Alert Box. Do not assume one provider’s donation link will trigger another provider’s alerts.
Fix donation GIFs that do not show
- No alert appears at all: Check that the Alert Box or browser source exists in the scene currently being broadcast and is not hidden. Confirm the right provider account or channel is connected and that the Tips event is enabled.
- A Streamlabs tip does not trigger an alert: Confirm the viewer used your Streamlabs donation link. That link dependency is specific to Streamlabs tip alerts.
- The old GIF or settings still appear: Save the latest configuration, reload or refresh the widget if it appears stale, and run another test.
- The wrong animation appears for a tip amount: Review the variation conditions. A tip below a minimum threshold may use the default alert or another matching variation.
- The alert appears but looks or sounds wrong: Recheck the selected asset, text, audio, duration, and placement, then test again in the active scene.
- The test works but a real payment does not: Verify the event type and payment route, then check the provider’s current account and platform settings. Test alerts confirm the widget configuration, but do not prove that every payment route or platform event is connected.
