League of Legends FPS drops usually come from a small set of causes: the PC is below the current requirements, graphics software is outdated or misconfigured, another process is competing for resources, the game is running on an integrated GPU, or settings are too demanding for the moment. Work through those causes in order. First determine whether frames drop inside a match or whether only the Riot client is slow; the fixes are different.
For an in-game drop, confirm DirectX or Metal support, update the operating system and graphics driver, remove overlays and background competition, select the dedicated GPU, reset vendor profiles, then test Riot’s low graphics baseline in a custom game. For client-only lag, use Low Spec Mode. If normal configuration files prevent the game from loading correctly, a MinConfig reset restores minimum settings without buying hardware.

Why does League of Legends FPS drop?
“FPS” is the number of rendered frames per second. A drop can be constant, appear only when champions and effects fill the screen, begin after a patch, or happen while the game client is open but no match is running. Those patterns point to different causes.
Separate client lag from in-game FPS drops
The client is the pre-match interface used for the store, collection, lobby and queue. The game process renders the actual match. A slow client can show delayed menus or animations while match FPS remains normal. Conversely, the client can feel fine while the match stutters.

Check whether your computer and graphics API are supported
Riot’s requirements page, updated September 22, 2026, lists Windows and macOS as the only supported operating systems. Windows now requires hardware that exposes DirectX 11 feature level 11_0; a generic “DirectX 11 installed” message is not enough. macOS requires a Metal-capable GPU.
| Platform and tier | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows minimum | Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-4100 | 2 GB RAM | 1 GB VRAM; DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 hardware | 16 GB HDD | 1024×768 |
| Windows recommended | Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 | 4 GB RAM | 2 GB VRAM; DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 hardware | 16 GB SSD | 1920×1080 |
| macOS minimum and recommended configurations listed by Riot | Apple M1 | 8 GB unified memory | Metal-capable GPU | 40 GB | Not stated |
The named figures are Riot Games Player Support’s 2026 requirements: 2 GB RAM minimum and 4 GB recommended; 1 GB VRAM minimum and 2 GB recommended; 16 GB of Windows storage; and 8 GB unified memory with 40 GB storage for macOS. A machine that merely meets the minimum can still lose frames during a busy fight, especially when other programs are active.

Verify the graphics API on Windows
- Press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the Display or Render tabs, check that the adapter supports DirectX 11 feature level
11_0or higher. - If the feature level is lower, the system does not meet the current Windows graphics requirement; settings changes cannot add the missing hardware capability.
On a Mac, confirm that the model uses a Metal-capable GPU and macOS 12 or later, as specified by Riot’s current list.
Apply the evidence-backed fix sequence
1. Update the operating system and graphics driver
Install pending Windows or macOS updates, then install the current driver offered for the graphics adapter. Riot notes that outdated graphics software and operating systems can create hardware-interaction problems. Restart after each update so the new driver is actually loaded.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, record the driver version and test the previous stable driver supplied by the adapter manufacturer rather than installing several versions at once. Keep one change at a time so a custom-game test can identify the cause.

2. Remove overlays and competing applications
Close browsers with video or many tabs, recording tools, chat overlays, launchers and other unused applications before starting a match. Overlays can hook into the rendering process even when their windows are hidden.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn Windows, use a clean boot when ordinary closing does not reveal the conflict:
- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and open System Configuration. - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining third-party services.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab, disable remaining startup items, apply the changes and restart Windows.
- Play a custom game. If the drop disappears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups until the conflicting program is identified.
A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent requirement. Restore normal startup after testing if it does not change FPS.
3. Make sure League uses the dedicated GPU
Laptops and hybrid-GPU desktops often contain an integrated GPU plus a more powerful dedicated adapter. Windows or the vendor utility can route the game to the integrated chip, causing low or unstable FPS even when the computer has capable hardware.
- Open the operating system’s graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s application.
- Add the League game executable if it is not listed.
- Set its preference to the high-performance or dedicated GPU.
- Apply the setting, restart the client and verify the result in a custom game.
Do this before changing many quality options. A routing error can make every setting appear ineffective.
4. Reset NVIDIA or AMD application profiles
Vendor control-panel overrides can conflict with the game’s own settings. Open the League profile in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD graphics software and choose its Restore Defaults or Reset option. Remove forced overrides for latency, synchronization, sharpening, anti-aliasing or image quality while troubleshooting, then let the game control those options.

Apply the reset to the League profile rather than changing unrelated global profiles. Restart the game after saving it.
5. Use Riot’s low graphics baseline
Riot’s baseline for isolating a performance problem is intentionally conservative:
| Setting | Temporary test value | Reason for the test |
|---|---|---|
| Character quality | Very Low | Reduces model detail and rendering work. |
| Environment quality | Very Low | Reduces map and scene detail. |
| Effects quality | Very Low | Reduces spell and combat-effect load during team fights. |
| Shadows | Disabled | Removes an expensive secondary rendering pass. |
| Frame-rate cap | 60 FPS | Creates a fixed target for comparison between tests. |
| VSync | Unchecked | Avoids synchronization behavior masking the underlying frame rate. |
| Anti-aliasing | Unchecked | Removes another variable while diagnosing. |
| HUD animations, target-frame display, line-missile display and attack-range display | Disabled while testing | Reduces extra interface and indicator work. |
Riot’s Wolf wrote on October 28, 2025: “Even if your system has got the muscle according to the recommended specs, cranking everything to max can still slow it down. If the fight feels choppy, dial back your graphics settings to the lowest.” Use the baseline to establish whether performance is graphics-load related; you can raise one option at a time after a stable test.

If the match itself is smooth but menus or the lobby crawl, enable Low Spec Mode in the client and restore the client window to 1280×720. These changes target client rendering and do not replace the in-game graphics test.
If the match is the problem, enable Close Client During Game. This removes the client from the background while the game is running and is especially useful on systems close to the minimum memory or processor requirements.
7. Reset broken settings with MinConfig
Use MinConfig when the game cannot load normally, settings are corrupted, or a bad configuration prevents you from reaching the graphics menu. This procedure replaces current in-game settings, so record any values you want to restore later.

Create a repeatable custom-game test: use the same map and a similar camera position, trigger the area where frames normally dip, and note the frame-rate behavior. Change only one variable between runs. This distinguishes a driver or background-process fix from a setting that merely changes how the problem feels.

FPS drops during team fights
Team fights combine many champions, particles, shadows and interface indicators. Start with Very Low character, environment and effects quality, disabled shadows, anti-aliasing and VSync, and a 60 FPS cap. Disable the listed HUD and range displays while testing. If the dip remains at this baseline, check dedicated-GPU routing, driver profiles and background processes; lowering another cosmetic option will not correct a routing or resource conflict.
Low FPS after a patch
A post-patch change can coincide with an outdated driver, operating-system update, reset graphics profile or altered configuration. First restart the computer, verify the driver and OS are current, and compare a custom game at the low baseline. If the problem occurs only in the live game but not in a controlled custom test, capture the conditions and avoid assuming that the patch alone is responsible.
Stutter on a “good” PC
Recommended specifications do not guarantee maximum settings at every moment. Riot’s 2025 statement explicitly warns that maxed settings can slow even a system meeting recommended specifications. Reset vendor overrides, confirm the dedicated GPU, close overlays and test the low baseline before considering hardware. A clean boot can reveal a recorder, overlay or utility that consumes resources only during gameplay.
Consistently low FPS on a laptop
Check both power state and GPU routing. Run the test while connected to the normal performance power source, select the dedicated GPU for League, and use Close Client During Game. If the machine still performs at the minimum baseline, compare its CPU, memory, VRAM and API support with Riot’s table rather than judging it by the laptop’s marketing name.

Client is slow but the match is fine
Do not lower in-game quality for a client problem. Enable Low Spec Mode and set the client window to 1280×720. Keep the match settings unchanged, then verify that entering a custom game does not introduce a separate frame-rate drop.
When should you consider hardware?
Hardware is the last step, not the first recommendation. Measure a specific shortfall: less than 2 GB of RAM or 1 GB of VRAM compared with Riot’s Windows minimum, failure to expose DirectX 11 feature level 11_0, a Mac below the listed M1/Metal/macOS 12/8 GB/40 GB configuration, or a processor that remains saturated after software conflicts are removed.
Do not buy a GPU, CPU, RAM kit, SSD, cooling pad or optimization utility solely from the phrase “League FPS drop.” A custom-game comparison at the low baseline, with overlays closed and the correct GPU selected, should show whether the bottleneck is graphics load, routing, memory, background software or unsupported hardware. Upgrading the wrong component will not fix a driver-profile conflict or client-only lag.

How to escalate a persistent drop to Riot
If the issue survives the requirements check, updates, clean-boot test, GPU routing check, profile reset, low baseline and MinConfig reset, gather diagnostics instead of repeatedly changing settings. Submit a Player Support ticket and attach the r3d log, a DirectX Diagnostic report and a process list. Include the platform, whether the drop is client-only or in-game, the trigger (constant, team fight or post-patch), the settings used, and the result of the custom-game comparison.
Those details let support compare a reproducible rendering problem with a background-process conflict. Keep the original log files from the session that demonstrated the drop, and state exactly which fixes were already tested.
Decision guide: choose the fix that matches the evidence
| Observed scope or trigger | First action | What a successful test tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Client menus only | Low Spec Mode and 1280×720 client window | The bottleneck is in the client rather than match rendering. |
| Match drops while client remains open | Close Client During Game | Background client work was competing with the game. |
| Team-fight dips | Riot low graphics baseline and custom-game test | Improvement implicates rendering load or an expensive effect. |
| Low FPS on a hybrid laptop | Select the dedicated GPU | Improvement confirms incorrect GPU routing. |
| Problem begins after a driver or OS change | Update fully, then reset the vendor profile | Improvement implicates software state rather than game hardware. |
| Game will not load usable settings | MinConfig reset | A corrupted or overly demanding configuration was blocking normal play. |
| No improvement after all controlled tests | Attach logs to a Riot Player Support ticket | Support receives reproducible evidence instead of a guess. |
Use the reversible software and configuration steps first. Only after a measured test identifies an actual hardware shortfall should replacement hardware enter the decision.
