Fix most live-stream lighting problems by changing the light’s position before buying anything: put your main light in front of you, close to the camera’s direction, and avoid a bright window or lamp behind you. Then soften harsh shadows, check your camera’s exposure controls, and investigate flicker separately. The exact camera settings vary by model.
Start with the light’s position
Move an existing desk lamp so it illuminates your face from near the webcam’s direction. A bright source behind you can make your face look dark or silhouetted; reduce its dominance or move your main light to the camera side of your face.
For its C922 webcam, Logitech advises placing lighting behind the webcam rather than behind the presenter and keeping backlighting to a minimum. The placement principle is useful broadly, but Logitech’s other numeric guidance is specific to that webcam: it recommends an environment lighting level above 300 lux for best C922 results. Fix harsh shadows without overcomplicating the setup
If one lamp creates a hard shadow across your face, soften or diffuse its beam if possible. If the shadow remains distracting, add a softer, secondary fill light on the shadowed side. Logitech describes a key light plus a softer fill light in its C922 guidance; it is an option, not a requirement to buy a two-light kit. A controllable LED key light is a reasonable purchase only if repositioning existing lights is not enough.

Check exposure when the image is dim or keeps changing
If your face remains dim after repositioning lights, inspect the camera’s exposure and low-light compensation controls. Automatic exposure can help when illumination changes during a stream, such as when daylight through a window shifts. But camera controls and menu labels depend on the model and its software.
Elgato says automatic exposure may suit changing light on Facecam. Its Camera Hub guidance suggests considering more light if Facecam ISO rises above 1000. That threshold applies to Facecam guidance; do not treat it as a rule for other cameras. Elgato Facecam Camera Hub settings

Stop flicker, ripples, or horizontal bands
Flicker and rolling bands can happen when artificial lighting’s refresh frequency conflicts with camera shutter or exposure timing. TP-Link describes the problem for VIGI cameras as a mismatch between the light source’s refresh frequency and the camera’s shutter or exposure settings. Its instructions, updated September 20, 2026, are to set the power-line frequency to match local electricity supply—50 Hz or 60 Hz—then adjust exposure; enable anti-flicker if the problem persists. Other cameras may offer similar controls under different names. Logitech documents an Anti-flicker setting in Tune for BRIO 500/501, while Elgato lists anti-flicker in Camera Hub for Facecam. If the video still looks pixelated
Once lighting and exposure are corrected, do not keep changing the lamps if the picture remains pixelated. Streamlabs lists bandwidth, encoder settings, and computer processing among other possible causes. Check those independently from lighting; an image problem can have more than one source. - Dark face or uneven shadows: Move the main light in front of you near the camera’s direction. Soften it or try a softer fill light if a hard shadow remains.
- Silhouette or bright background: Reduce the brightness of the source behind you or move the main light to the camera side.
- Dim image or changing brightness: Check your camera’s exposure and low-light controls. Use model-specific advice; Facecam’s ISO guidance does not automatically apply to other cameras.
- Flicker, ripples, or bands: Check whether your camera offers a local 50 Hz or 60 Hz power-frequency setting and an anti-flicker control. Follow your camera’s model-specific instructions.
- Pixelation after lighting is fixed: Investigate bandwidth, encoder configuration, and computer processing rather than repeatedly adjusting the lights.
