Start by checking the laptop’s power state, Windows power mode, GPU assignment, background resource use, drivers, display settings, and temperature behavior—in that order. These checks separate a sustained performance limit from intermittent frame-pacing problems without promising an FPS increase that your hardware or game cannot deliver.

Use the same game scene, resolution, and settings while testing. Record whether the laptop is plugged in, which Windows version it runs, and whether the problem began after an update or configuration change. Change one thing at a time so you can identify the change that actually mattered.

First, identify what “low FPS” or “stuttering” means on your laptop

Low average FPS and stuttering are related but different symptoms. A game that renders slowly all the time may be limited by the laptop’s hardware, its power state, or game settings. A game that usually feels smooth but pauses, hitches, or varies sharply may be experiencing frame-pacing disruption from competing resources, a driver change, display configuration, or heat-related behavior.

Build a repeatable baseline

  1. Choose one repeatable scene, such as the same level, replay, benchmark section supplied by the game, or a fixed route through the map.
  2. Keep resolution, graphics settings, window mode, and other in-game options unchanged for the first comparison.
  3. Note whether the laptop is connected to its normal power adapter or running on battery.
  4. Write down the Windows version and whether the issue appeared after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, game update, or settings change.
  5. Play the same section long enough to observe both the usual frame rate and any recurring hitch. This is a comparison method, not a universal benchmark prescribed by Microsoft.

Do not compare a battery run in one scene with a plugged-in run in another. You would be changing several variables at once and could mistake a scene change for a fix.

Classify the symptom before changing settings

What you observe What it suggests First check
FPS is consistently low from the moment the game starts A sustained performance limit, power restriction, GPU selection, or demanding game configuration Power state and Windows graphics preference
Gameplay is normally smooth but hitches when another app opens or changes activity CPU, memory, or disk contention Task Manager while reproducing the hitch
The problem began immediately after a driver or Windows update A possible driver regression or changed configuration; timing alone does not prove causation Driver version and rollback availability
Stutter grows as the session continues and the chassis becomes warmer Heat may be contributing, but no universal temperature cutoff establishes throttling Model-specific diagnostics and airflow guidance
The game feels uneven despite an adequate rendered frame rate Refresh-rate, VRR, window-mode, or frame-pacing interaction Advanced display settings and the selected display

This classification prevents a common mistake: changing every setting when only one condition is responsible.

Check power before changing game settings

A laptop can perform differently on battery and on external power. Windows power modes trade efficiency, balanced operation, and performance. Microsoft describes Best performance as the mode that maximizes performance and may allow the processor to operate at higher levels when needed. It also increases power consumption, drains a laptop battery faster, and may make the device run warmer.

Use the normal power adapter for testing

Connect the adapter that the laptop normally uses for gaming, then wait for Windows to recognize external power. A battery test is still useful when battery gaming is your real use case, but label it separately. A result obtained while plugged in does not prove that the same FPS is possible on battery.

Select Best performance in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Power & battery.
  3. Open the available power-mode control and select Best performance.
  4. Restart the game and repeat the exact baseline scene.

Some PCs do not expose every mode, and custom power plans can change which choices appear. If the control is absent, record that fact rather than assuming another mode has the same behavior.

Understand the trade-offs

Power-mode choice When it is useful Trade-off to watch
Efficiency-oriented mode Battery life or lower heat matters more than maximum game performance May restrict performance headroom
Balanced operation General use when you want a compromise between responsiveness, battery use, and heat May not provide the maximum available performance
Best performance Plugged-in gaming when you need the laptop to prioritize performance Higher power use, faster battery drain if unplugged, and potentially more heat

There is no universal FPS gain from selecting Best performance. If the game does not improve after the controlled comparison, the cause may be elsewhere.

Make sure Windows is assigning the game to the intended GPU

Laptops with more than one graphics processor can run an application on different GPUs. Windows 11 provides a per-app graphics preference, including High performance. This setting is a check, not a guarantee: the game, driver, laptop firmware, and display path can still affect which processor does the work.

Set a game’s Windows graphics preference

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Display > Graphics.
  3. Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add its executable.
  4. Select the game and open its Options.
  5. Choose High performance, select Save, and close Settings.
  6. Exit and restart the game before comparing the baseline scene.

Apply the preference to the actual game executable, not merely to a launcher. If a launcher starts a separate game process, check the game entry as well.

Windowed-game optimization

Windows 11 also offers Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. If you change this option, restart the game before judging the result. Compatibility depends on the game and mode, so an option being present does not establish that it will improve every title.

Find background processes that compete with the game

A game can stutter when another process temporarily consumes CPU time, memory, or disk activity. Windows Task Manager provides a way to see whether that is happening while the symptom is visible.

Inspect usage with Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, look for applications with unusually high CPU, memory, or disk use.
  3. On Performance, watch the corresponding CPU, memory, and disk graphs while reproducing the hitch.
  4. Close applications you do not need for the session, then repeat the same game scene.

Close only software you recognize and do not need. Do not indiscriminately disable security software, system services, or drivers. If the system remains unusually busy after unnecessary applications are closed, restart Windows and open only the game and required services for a controlled comparison.

Interpret the result

  • If a background application’s activity rises at the same moment as each hitch and the hitch disappears when that application is closed, keep that application out of the test session and investigate its own settings.
  • If CPU, memory, and disk activity remain ordinary while the game still stutters, background contention is less likely to be the immediate cause.
  • If memory pressure remains high after closing unused programs, restarting can clear accumulated activity, but it does not prove a permanent resource problem.

Handle graphics-driver changes according to timing

Driver troubleshooting is most useful when tied to a specific change. Microsoft documents updating a display driver, uninstalling it for troubleshooting, and rolling it back when a recent update preceded the symptom. The cited Microsoft guidance addresses flickering or scrambled display behavior, so applying those steps to game stutter is a troubleshooting inference rather than proof that a driver caused the stutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem began after an update

  1. Record which update or driver version preceded the change.
  2. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  3. Open the affected adapter’s properties and inspect the Driver tab.
  4. If Roll Back Driver is available and the timing strongly matches the update, use the rollback option and restart Windows.
  5. Repeat the baseline scene. If the issue remains, the update timing was not sufficient evidence that the driver was the cause.

If there was no recent update

Use the laptop maker’s or graphics-adapter maker’s support page for the exact laptop model and operating-system version where possible. A driver intended for a different model can be unsuitable even when the GPU family name looks similar. Updating or reinstalling can help when the installed driver is damaged, but neither action guarantees an FPS increase.

When to stop changing drivers

Do not cycle through unrelated driver packages without recording each version and result. If the game behaves the same after a correctly matched driver update or rollback, return to power, GPU assignment, resource use, display configuration, and model-specific diagnostics instead of treating drivers as the default explanation.

Verify refresh rate and variable refresh support

Rendered FPS and display refresh rate are different quantities. The game may render frames at one rate while the display refreshes at another. A high refresh-rate setting cannot create frames that the game or laptop does not render.

Check the selected display in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Display > Advanced display.
  3. Confirm which display is selected if the laptop is connected to an external monitor.
  4. Review the current refresh rate and the rates Windows offers.
  5. Check whether Windows reports support for variable refresh rate (VRR).

Available rates depend on the display’s capabilities and connection. Some games can use VRR dynamically, while others may not. If you change the refresh rate or a windowed-game optimization, restart the game and repeat the same scene.

Use the result correctly

  • If Windows is using a lower rate than the display supports, selecting a supported higher rate may make motion appear smoother, but it does not raise rendered FPS.
  • If VRR is not reported, do not assume the display can synchronize dynamically.
  • If an external monitor is involved, repeat the test on the laptop panel and the external display separately; they are different display paths.

Investigate heat without guessing a temperature limit

Best performance can make a laptop run warmer. That observation alone does not prove thermal throttling. The available Windows guidance does not establish a universal temperature cutoff, a guaranteed cooling-pad benefit, or a particular accessory that fixes stutter on every model.

Look for a repeatable heat-related pattern

  1. Start from a cool, consistent state and run the same game scene.
  2. Note whether stutter appears only after sustained play and whether the chassis becomes noticeably warmer.
  3. Repeat after allowing the laptop to return to its normal idle temperature.
  4. Compare the behavior with the laptop positioned according to the manufacturer’s airflow instructions.

A pattern that returns after sustained use makes heat worth investigating, but it still does not identify a failed component or a universal threshold. Check the manufacturer’s diagnostics, firmware guidance, and ventilation instructions for the exact model. Avoid blocking intake or exhaust openings.

Decide whether an accessory is justified

Consider a ventilated stand or cooling pad only after heat has been identified as a plausible contributor and after checking compatibility with the laptop’s vents. Microsoft’s power-mode guidance does not establish that an accessory will fix stutter or work with every laptop, so treat it as an optional experiment rather than a guaranteed solution.

Use this complete troubleshooting order

The following order minimizes unnecessary changes and preserves a useful comparison after every step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a repeatable scene and record resolution, settings, power state, Windows version, and the time the symptom began.
  2. Connect the normal power adapter and compare battery and plugged-in behavior separately.
  3. In Windows 11, select Best performance at Settings > System > Power & battery when maximum performance is needed and heat is acceptable.
  4. At Settings > System > Display > Graphics, set the game to High performance on systems with multiple GPUs, then restart the game.
  5. For compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games, test Optimizations for windowed games, restarting after the change.
  6. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, close unneeded applications, and compare CPU, memory, and disk activity during the same scene.
  7. If the issue follows a driver or Windows update, use the exact-model driver path and consider rollback when the option is available.
  8. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and verify refresh rate and reported VRR support for the display actually used.
  9. If symptoms build with sustained heat, follow the laptop maker’s model-specific diagnostics and airflow instructions.
  10. After each change, restore the same scene and settings. Keep the change only if the behavior improves consistently.

What these checks can and cannot establish

They can establish a useful direction

  • A difference between battery and plugged-in runs points toward power-state behavior, though it does not identify every component involved.
  • A change after selecting a per-app high-performance GPU preference indicates that GPU assignment mattered for that configuration.
  • A hitch that aligns with a CPU, memory, or disk spike makes resource contention a reasonable next investigation.
  • A symptom that starts after a driver change justifies rollback or a matched-driver test, but timing is not proof of causation.
  • A display’s Advanced display page tells you the current refresh rate and whether Windows reports VRR capability for that display.

They cannot establish from Windows settings alone

  • They cannot promise a fixed FPS gain or prove that a laptop has enough hardware headroom for a particular game.
  • They cannot provide a universal thermal-throttling temperature or validate one cooling product for all laptop designs.
  • They cannot replace the game developer’s requirements or model-specific firmware, BIOS, and hardware diagnostics.
  • They cannot make refresh rate equal rendered FPS.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences that matter

The paths above target Windows 11 because its Graphics settings and windowed-game optimization controls are documented there. Windows 10 and Windows 11 both provide power-mode controls, but available choices vary by PC and custom plan. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the laptop still runs Windows 10, verify the controls present on that installation and plan troubleshooting around the support status of the operating system and the drivers supplied for the exact model.

Do not assume a Windows 11 instruction exists under the same label in Windows 10. Record the operating system before following a path, and use the laptop maker’s documentation when a control is missing.

When to escalate beyond Windows settings

Escalate to the laptop manufacturer or game support when the controlled checks produce no consistent change, the adapter is not recognized correctly, the display behaves abnormally outside the game, or the symptom is tied to model-specific firmware, cooling, or hardware diagnostics. Provide the support technician with your baseline scene, power state, Windows version, driver version, GPU preference, Task Manager observations, display configuration, and the exact point at which the symptom appears.

This record is more useful than reporting only “low FPS”: it shows whether the issue is constant or intermittent, reproducible or occasional, and connected to a documented change.

The Bottom Line

For laptop-game stutter, test methodically: plug in, select the appropriate Windows power mode, verify the game’s GPU preference, remove unnecessary resource competition, handle drivers according to update timing, confirm refresh and VRR settings, and use model-specific guidance for heat. Keep the same scene and change one variable at a time; no Windows setting can guarantee an FPS increase or replace hardware-specific diagnosis.
