What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Low average frame rate, brief stutters, and late-loading textures are different problems, so they need different tests. Start by identifying which symptom you have, compare the affected game with its current requirements, then change one reversible setting at a time and repeat the same scene. This process can reveal whether the limiting factor is CPU time, GPU or shader work, graphics memory, storage, or a game-specific bug—without assuming that a new graphics card or SSD is the answer.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Open-world games stream geometry, textures, audio, and effects while they simulate a large world. A performance problem that looks like “low FPS” may actually be a short CPU stall, a shader compiling in the background, or an asset arriving late from storage. Use the pattern of the problem to choose the first check rather than changing every graphics option at once.

| What you see | When it happens | Likely area to investigate | First reversible test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame rate stays low for most of a session | Nearly every location or combat encounter | CPU or GPU limit, resolution, settings, or hardware below the game’s requirement | Observe CPU and GPU load, then lower settings that tax the component reaching its limit |
| Short freezes or sudden dips interrupt otherwise smooth play | First launch, after an update, or when a new effect appears | Shader compilation, asset streaming, a driver or patch regression, or a CPU spike | Allow the game’s own shader preparation to finish and repeat the same route |
| Textures turn blurry or appear a moment late | Entering a new area, turning quickly, or traversing the world | Graphics-memory pressure, streaming, storage, or a title-specific issue | Lower texture quality one step and retest the identical area |
| Only one game has the problem | After a particular patch or driver change | Game files, a patch regression, or a title-specific compatibility issue | Read that game’s support notes, update it, and verify files if instructed |
| Several games slow down together | After an operating-system, driver, or hardware change | System-wide driver, thermal, background-process, or hardware issue | Compare loads and temperatures in more than one title before changing game settings |
Record whether the issue began after a game patch, graphics-driver change, first launch, or a graphics-setting change. Also note the exact game version, platform, resolution, graphics preset, and location where it occurs. These details prevent you from treating unrelated symptoms as one problem.
Average FPS versus frame-time hitches
Average FPS describes how many frames are delivered over a period; it does not show whether one frame took dramatically longer than the others. A game can report a high average while a single long frame produces a visible pause. Conversely, a steady lower frame rate can feel consistent. If the game or overlay exposes a frame-time graph, look for isolated spikes during the hitch. If not, use the repeatable route below and describe the duration and trigger in your notes.

Check the game’s actual requirements and your current limits
Use the publisher’s current system-requirements page for the exact edition and update you play. Compare the listed CPU, GPU, graphics-memory capacity, system RAM, and storage requirement with your machine. Requirements are title-specific; a specification published for one game cannot be turned into a universal open-world threshold. A minimum specification generally describes what can launch or run at a basic target, while a recommended specification may assume a different resolution, preset, or frame-rate goal. Confirm what the publisher says those labels mean.
Measure the limiting component
If monitoring is available, watch CPU and GPU utilization, clocks, temperatures, system memory, and dedicated graphics memory while the problem occurs. A high GPU reading during a low-FPS scene suggests that resolution, ray-traced effects, shadows, or other GPU settings are demanding too much. A CPU-limited game may show low overall GPU utilization because one or more CPU threads cannot prepare frames quickly enough. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance specifically notes that CPU limitations are common in Windows games and that high-resolution pixel-shader work can make the GPU the bottleneck.
Overall CPU percentage can mislead when one thread is full and other cores are idle. If your monitor can show per-core activity, check it during the affected scene. Also note whether clocks fall as temperatures rise; a thermal or power limit can look like a settings problem, but it should be confirmed with measurements rather than assumed.

If the GPU is saturated, reduce resolution or a GPU-heavy effect and test again. If the CPU is the constraint, lower simulation- or crowd-related options when the game exposes them, cap the frame rate to a sustainable value, and close background workloads. Do not infer a bottleneck from one menu reading; check the affected scene while the symptom is visible.
Establish a repeatable test
- Choose a short route that reliably produces the problem, such as a city-to-wilderness transition, a fast vehicle route, or a known combat encounter.
- Restart the game in the same state and use the same resolution, preset, and frame-rate cap for the baseline. Keep overlays and recording settings consistent.
- Run the route once without changing anything. Note the approximate FPS, where a hitch occurs, and whether textures are blurry or simply late.
- Change one setting or perform one maintenance step.
- Run the route again under the same conditions and record whether average FPS, hitch frequency, frame-time spikes, or texture appearance changed.
Repeat the route more than once when the symptom is intermittent. A repeatable route is more useful than judging the result while wandering through a different part of the map. If a patch or driver changed the behavior, keep a dated note so you can distinguish a real improvement from normal variation.
Fix sustained low FPS
When the GPU is the limit
Lower the setting with the largest measured GPU cost first. Resolution and high-resolution pixel-shader effects can have a disproportionate impact, while shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, and ray tracing are common heavy options when a game provides them. Test a single reduction, then decide whether the visual trade-off is acceptable. A stable frame-rate cap below the fluctuating average can feel smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly misses frame-time targets.
Use the same display resolution when comparing presets unless resolution itself is the test. Upscaling or a lower internal resolution may increase FPS, but it can change image quality and may not help a CPU-limited scene. Record whether a change improves the worst dips, not only the menu benchmark or a quiet area. If lowering several GPU options produces almost no change, restore them and investigate CPU time or a title-specific issue instead.
When the CPU is the limit
CPU-limited performance is possible even with a powerful graphics card. Dense crowds, world simulation, draw-call preparation, and background streaming can all consume CPU time. Reduce the game’s CPU-oriented options if available, close demanding background programs, and avoid assuming that lowering resolution will help; a resolution reduction often leaves a CPU bottleneck unchanged. If the frame rate improves only after reducing simulation or population settings, the CPU—not the GPU—is directing the fix.

A frame-rate cap can prevent the CPU from preparing more frames than the display can use and can reduce oscillation between fast and slow frames. Choose a cap the system can sustain in the most demanding area, then verify it in that area. Do not treat a cap as extra performance: it trades peak FPS for consistency.
When the system is below the requirement
If your processor, graphics card, VRAM, RAM, or storage device falls below the named game requirement, software tuning may provide only a partial improvement. Check the requirement for the current version before considering an upgrade. Keep the game and operating system on supported, up-to-date software, but treat updates as troubleshooting steps rather than guaranteed performance fixes. A machine that meets a listed minimum can still need lower settings to reach a particular resolution or frame-rate target.
Reduce stutter caused by shader compilation
Recognize shader-related hitches
Hitches that are strongest on first play, immediately after a game update, or when a new visual effect appears are consistent with shader preparation. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery documentation explains why: “Compiling those shaders on the player’s device at launch, or ‘just-in-time’ during gameplay, leads to longer load times, in-game shader compilation stutter, and higher power consumption.” A game can also build or refresh a local shader cache after installation or a driver change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLet any visible shader-preparation step complete before judging performance. Leave the game open until its own progress indicator finishes, if it provides one, and then replay the same route. If the game offers a shader compilation or cache-building command, follow that title’s own support instructions. Square Enix, for example, documents an in-game compilation option and a stated procedure for a supported game; its menu path and timing are not instructions for every other title. Do not cancel the process repeatedly and expect the same session to remain smooth.
Compilation can return after a major patch, a graphics-driver change, or a change in hardware. A first run after such an event is not necessarily representative of later runs. Note whether the hitch frequency falls after repeated traversal; if it does not, investigate CPU spikes, streaming, or a regression instead of assuming shaders are still compiling.
What Advanced Shader Delivery does—and does not do
Advanced Shader Delivery is a Windows 11 technology intended to precompile and deliver shaders before gameplay for supported games and devices. Microsoft states that availability depends on a supported Windows version, GPU, driver capability, and storefront integration. It is therefore not a switch that every Windows player can enable, and its absence does not indicate a faulty PC. Check the game, hardware, driver, and storefront support information before expecting it to change stutter. A compatible title may still have other sources of hitching.
Driver and vendor behavior
AMD’s documentation also describes background shader compilation and notes that affected titles may perform worse until compilation completes. Read the current driver and game notes for your specific combination. A driver update can improve a title, but it can also reset or rebuild caches; test after the update rather than assuming the first launch represents steady-state performance. Avoid deleting caches as a first-line step unless the game or driver vendor specifically instructs you to do so, because rebuilding can temporarily increase the same hitches you are trying to measure.

Test graphics-memory pressure first
Lower texture quality by one step, keep every other setting unchanged, and revisit the same location. If blurry or late textures improve, compare the game’s graphics-memory requirement with your GPU’s available VRAM. Close applications that consume graphics resources and retest. BeamNG.drive Support states: “Low-memory graphics cards may have trouble loading textures properly, which can cause blurry textures, delayed texture loading, or visual pop-in during gameplay.” That is evidence for a possible VRAM limit in affected titles, not proof that VRAM causes every game’s pop-in.

Texture quality often changes memory use more directly than resolution, so it is a useful diagnostic even when average FPS barely changes. If the game reports a graphics-memory budget, keep the indicator below its warning range and retest traversal. Remember that other graphics options may also consume memory; change one option at a time so you know which trade-off helped.
If lowering textures has no effect, do not buy a graphics card solely on that observation. Asset-streaming bugs, storage behavior, patches, and other game-specific causes can produce similar visuals. Look for the named game’s support notes and reproduce the issue after a restart. Capture a short clip showing the same area before and after the change if you need to report it.
Separate streaming from a general FPS limit
Pop-in can occur while the frame rate remains high, whereas a GPU or CPU limit usually affects frame delivery across the scene. Track both symptoms independently. A texture setting can reduce memory pressure without changing average FPS; that still indicates a useful, targeted fix. Conversely, if textures are sharp but the whole scene slows, concentrate on the measured CPU or GPU limit rather than storage speculation.
Recommended Free Tools
Perform low-risk software checks
- Install current Windows updates and the graphics driver from the official operating-system and GPU-vendor channels.
- Update the game through its supported launcher or platform.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification or repair function if the publisher recommends it for the title. Verification may reacquire damaged files, but it does not guarantee a performance change.
- Restart the PC after updates, then repeat your fixed test route before changing another setting.
PlayStation’s PC support guidance includes Windows and driver updates, and Santa Monica Studio documents game-update and file-verification steps for its supported title. These checks can repair a damaged or incomplete installation, but they are not universal cures for shader stutter or streaming delays.
Keep a record of the driver and game versions used for each test. If a problem begins immediately after an update, check the publisher’s current notes and support channels rather than installing unofficial packages. Avoid blanket driver removal, registry edits, indiscriminate cache deletion, and third-party “optimizer” utilities unless the game publisher or hardware vendor gives title-specific instructions. Such changes can remove useful diagnostic information or create a new configuration problem.
Use a decision path instead of changing everything at once
If FPS is low everywhere
- Check the game’s current CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, and storage requirements.
- Measure CPU and GPU load, clocks, temperatures, and memory use in an affected scene.
- Lower settings that tax the measured limiting component and retest the same route.
- If a cap improves consistency, choose a sustainable cap rather than chasing a fluctuating peak.
- If the system remains below the requirement, investigate compatible hardware only after confirming the exact deficit.
If only traversal or new effects cause hitches
- Allow the game’s shader preparation or compilation to finish.
- Check for a title-specific shader-cache procedure; do not copy another game’s menu path.
- Install current game and driver updates, then repeat the same route.
- Consider streaming or CPU load if shader preparation does not change the hitch.
- Compare first-run behavior with a later run after compilation has had time to complete.
If textures arrive late
- Lower texture quality one step while leaving other settings unchanged.
- Compare VRAM availability with the game’s published requirement.
- Close graphics-intensive background applications.
- Check the title’s support notes before attributing the issue to storage or purchasing hardware.
- Document the location, movement speed, and whether FPS also drops.
When an upgrade is justified
Graphics card and VRAM
A card with more VRAM is relevant when the named game requires more graphics memory than your card provides, monitoring shows memory pressure, and a lower texture setting clearly reduces the symptom. Confirm power, case clearance, connector requirements, display outputs, and system compatibility before buying. If the evidence points to a CPU limit, a higher-VRAM GPU may not improve sustained FPS. Also compare the card’s expected performance at your target resolution; capacity alone does not determine frame rate.
Do not use a single title’s requirement as a universal buying target. Match the proposed card to the games you actually play, their current requirements, and the resolution and preset you want. A purchase should address a measured deficit, not simply the presence of one stutter.
SSD storage
Use an SSD when the game’s published requirement calls for one or when your diagnosis identifies a storage limitation. One PlayStation-published PC example lists a 190 GB SSD requirement. That figure applies to that specific title and is not evidence that an SSD fixes shader compilation or every texture-streaming problem. Before purchasing, verify interface, form factor, capacity, free space, platform support, and installation constraints. Confirm that the drive can be installed in your device and that enough free capacity remains for updates; do not assume any SSD fits every PC or console.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Storage can be a conditional part of a streaming diagnosis, but a faster drive is not a guaranteed cure for a game bug or insufficient VRAM. Test the game’s own requirement and support guidance first, and compare behavior after moving or reinstalling only when that step is supported and practical.
Consider total cost and compatibility
Budget for more than the headline component price: a graphics-card change may require adequate power and case space, while a storage upgrade may require an adapter, an open slot, or a larger capacity than the game alone occupies. The correct choice depends on the named game, platform, and measured limit. If those details are unknown, postpone the purchase and collect them rather than relying on a generic upgrade list.
Do not upgrade from a symptom alone
Neither a single stutter nor occasional pop-in establishes a hardware fault. Repeat the controlled test, check the game’s requirements, and look for a setting change that affects the symptom. Hardware shopping belongs after those checks, not before them.

For useful support from the publisher or platform, provide the game name and version, device and operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system RAM, storage device and free space, driver version, resolution, graphics settings, and the exact location and trigger. State whether the issue began after a patch, driver change, or first launch, and distinguish sustained low FPS from a brief hitch or late texture. Include whether shader preparation completed, whether lowering textures changed anything, and whether CPU or GPU load was high during the event.
Console players should follow the game and platform’s current support instructions rather than applying PC driver or shader-cache procedures. The technical guidance for these checks is predominantly PC-specific, and there is no single fix that applies to every open-world game. Console menus, storage rules, and update behavior differ by platform, so use the manufacturer’s current steps.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a game stutter even when it meets the recommended specifications?
Recommended specifications do not eliminate shader compilation, CPU spikes, driver changes, or title-specific streaming problems. Check whether the hitch is concentrated on first play, after an update, or when new effects appear. Measure CPU and GPU load in the exact scene, allow the game’s shader preparation to finish, and test one reversible setting before considering hardware.
Should I lower resolution or texture quality first?
Use the observed limit. Lower resolution or GPU-heavy effects when the GPU is saturated. Lower texture quality when late or blurry textures suggest graphics-memory pressure. Resolution reduction often does little for a CPU-limited game, while texture reduction may improve pop-in without changing average FPS.

Can more VRAM fix every texture pop-in problem?
No. BeamNG support identifies low-memory graphics cards as one possible cause of delayed or blurry textures and pop-in. Streaming bugs, storage behavior, patches, and other title-specific causes can look similar. Confirm a VRAM deficit and a reproducible improvement from lower textures before buying a card.

Should I delete the shader cache?
Not as a universal first step. A cache may need to be rebuilt, and that can temporarily increase compilation hitches. Follow the named game’s or driver vendor’s instructions. First allow any in-game compilation to complete and compare the same route on a later run.
Does an SSD automatically stop stuttering?
No. One PlayStation PC title lists a 190 GB SSD requirement, but that is a title-specific specification. An SSD may matter when the game requires one or storage is demonstrated as a limitation; it does not automatically resolve shader compilation, CPU limits, insufficient VRAM, or a game bug.
What information should I include in a support request?
Include the game and version, platform, operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage device and free space, driver version, resolution, settings, and the exact route or trigger. Say whether the symptom is sustained low FPS, an intermittent hitch, or late texture loading, and mention any change after updates or a one-setting test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a game stutter even when it meets the recommended specifications?
Recommended specifications do not eliminate shader compilation, CPU spikes, driver changes, or title-specific streaming problems. Check when the hitch occurs, allow shader preparation to finish, and measure CPU and GPU load in the affected scene.
Should I lower resolution or texture quality first?
Use the measured limit. Lower resolution or GPU-heavy effects when the GPU is saturated; lower texture quality when late or blurry textures suggest graphics-memory pressure. Resolution changes often do little for a CPU bottleneck.
Can more VRAM fix every texture pop-in problem?
No. Low graphics memory is one documented cause, but streaming bugs, storage behavior, patches, and other game-specific issues can look the same. Confirm a VRAM deficit and improvement from lower textures before upgrading.
Should I delete the shader cache?
Not as a universal first step. Rebuilding a cache can temporarily increase hitches. Follow the specific game or driver instructions and first allow in-game compilation to complete.
Does an SSD automatically stop stuttering?
No. An SSD matters when the title requires one or testing identifies storage as a limitation. It does not automatically fix shader compilation, CPU limits, insufficient VRAM, or a game bug.
What should I include in a support request?
Provide the game and version, platform, operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage device and free space, driver version, resolution, settings, and the exact trigger. Distinguish sustained low FPS from a hitch or late texture.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the pattern first: sustained low FPS points to a measured CPU or GPU limit, first-run hitches often involve shader preparation, and late textures warrant a VRAM and streaming check. Use the game’s own requirements and support instructions, change one reversible setting at a time, and buy hardware only when a confirmed deficit justifies the cost.
