What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Mafia: The Old Country keeps crashing on PC, match the fix to the symptom: a failed first Steam launch needs an online connection, a first-start black screen may clear after a short wait, and cinematic hitching has a specific Frame Generation workaround. For other crashes, check the game’s requirements, update it and your graphics driver, then use 2K Support’s escalation steps. No single cause or fix is confirmed for every PC crash.
Start with the symptom
2K’s PC troubleshooting guide separates first-launch problems, a black screen, cinematic hitching and graphics or performance trouble. Try the relevant step below rather than treating every freeze or slowdown as a crash. 2K’s troubleshooting guide was published August 1 and updated August 14, 2025.

Steam will not launch the game for the first time
For the first launch, 2K says Steam needs to be online so the game can complete validation and receive patches. Temporarily disable programs that restrict network access for that launch. According to 2K, offline play is available after the first successful launch.
Black screen at startup
If this happens on the first startup, wait about 12–15 seconds before closing the game. 2K describes this as a possible one-time issue that should resolve on its own.
#1 Best Overall
- UNCOVER A MERCILESS WORLD OF ORGANIZED CRIME: The rough-hewn beauty of Sicily's rugged countryside is a stark contrast to the grime of urban alleyways—but the treachery and violence of this gangland run just as deep. Rival families and their ruthless leaders wage unending turf wars in the shadows, hidden from the public eye. Trust is a fleeting rarity, and loyalties are worth killing for.
- PLAY A CLASSIC MOB MOVIE: You're the antihero of this thrilling 1900s story, living out every tense moment of Enzo's descent into Sicily’s clandestine criminal underworld. Come face-to-face with a cast of unpredictable allies and cutthroat enemies in this classic crime drama, rich in period-authentic details that will immerse you in this treacherous Mediterranean setting.
- FIGHT TO SURVIVE: Engage in life-or-death combat, be it up close with a blade or from afar with a variety of firearms. Ambush enemies for vicious stealth takedowns, or slice them up in close-quarters duels. If you prefer firearms, wield period-authentic handguns, rifles, and shotguns to overcome any odds and doggedly eliminate the Don's enemies.
- TRAVEL IN AUTHENTIC STYLE: Traverse a wide range of Sicilian environments, from underground crypts and crumbling ruins to bountiful vineyards and ornate opera houses. To reach your next target or make a hurried getaway, you'll need to gallop on horseback across cobbled streets and open fields, or speed down dirt roads in authentic turn-of-the-century automobiles.
Cinematics hitch or lag
Turn off Frame Generation if it is enabled. 2K identifies it as a current cause of cinematic hitching and recommends disabling the setting to address that issue.
Graphics or performance trouble
These adjustments are intended for graphics and performance problems; 2K does not present them as guaranteed fixes for crashes:

- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
- Update your graphics driver.
- Reduce render resolution. 2K gives 75–80% as an example range to try.
- Test your GPU vendor’s upscaling option—DLSS for NVIDIA, FSR for AMD or XeSS for Intel—instead of Unreal TSR. Try a different upscaling mode if needed.
A different crash or failure
2K recommends restarting the chapter as an initial troubleshooting step for other issues. If it does not help, use the linked PC troubleshooting guide for its general PC and Steam launch guidance, then check the issue tracker or submit a support ticket.
Check your PC against the published requirements
Compare your system with 2K’s PC system requirements, published June 30, 2025. They describe target hardware, not a diagnosis: falling below a listed target may affect compatibility or performance, but does not establish why a particular PC crashes.

| Target | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage and target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel Core i7-9700K | 16 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or NVIDIA RTX 2070 | DirectX 12; 55 GB available and an SSD required; Medium at 1080p |
| Recommended | AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or Intel Core i7-12700K | 32 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT or NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti | DirectX 12; 55 GB available and an SSD required; High at 1440p |
The 55 GB figure is from 2K’s requirements page. If your system lacks an SSD, meeting that requirement may address a storage shortfall, but buying hardware is not a universal fix for crashes on a system that already meets the target.
Consider the Intel 13th- or 14th-generation CPU caveat
2K warns that some Intel 13th- and 14th-generation processors may become unstable under load because of technical errors. Reported symptoms include slowdowns, crashes, overheating and large CPU-usage spikes during gaming or installation. This is a possible factor, not proof that a crash on one of these processors has that cause. For processor-specific instructions, follow current guidance from Intel and your PC or motherboard manufacturer, or contact 2K Support; do not apply an unverified BIOS, voltage, clock or power-setting change.

Install updates, then escalate unresolved crashes
2K’s support index lists PC updates through September 2026. The notes describe fixes for particular issues, not a guarantee that all PC crashes are resolved:
- PC Hotfix 1, August 12, 2025, addressed a visual hitch on certain graphics cards.
- PC Hotfix 2, published August 18 and updated August 20, 2025, made cinematic performance and stability changes.
- August 28, 2025 patch notes, subsequently updated July 7, 2026, report various PC stability and performance improvements.
- The August 20, 2026 PC hotfix addresses distorted visuals when DLSS and HDR are active together at lower framerates.
- September 1, 2026 patch notes list gameplay, visual, progression and overall stability improvements.
Make sure the game is up to date, then consult the 2K support index for current issue listings and submit a ticket if the crash persists. Include the requested bug-report details so support can assess your case. 2K lists the Steam save folder as Users/[Windows username]/AppData/Local/Hangar 13 Games/Mafia The Old Country/SaveGames. Do not delete or overwrite saves as a generic troubleshooting step.
