Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Mario & Luigi: Brothership closes with an error, freezes, or will not start on Nintendo Switch, follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting order: restart the console, update the system and game, and check for corrupted data. The next step depends on whether you use a download or a game card and on any error code shown. These steps can help isolate the cause, but Nintendo does not identify every crash as a known Brothership bug.

- The game closes to the HOME Menu with an error: write down the full message and any error code. Nintendo directs players to use the instructions for a specific error when one is displayed.
- The game freezes or stops responding: try the steps for unresponsive downloaded software if you have a digital copy, and record where the freeze occurs.
- The game will not start: note whether it is downloaded or on a game card. Nintendo gives different instructions for those cases.
Also note whether the issue happens at the same event each time and whether a microSD card is involved. That information will help if you need Nintendo Support.

Follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps
1. Restart the console
Restart the Switch, then launch the game again. If it still fails, return to the point where the error occurred to see whether the problem recurs. Nintendo’s closure guidance recommends checking the game at the point of failure after troubleshooting.

2. Update the system and Brothership
Check that the console has the latest system update, then check for an update to the game. To check Brothership, highlight its icon on the HOME Menu without opening it, press + or −, and select Software Update → Via the Internet.
Nintendo’s Americas support page lists Mario & Luigi: Brothership Ver. 1.0.1, released February 18, 2025; Nintendo UK lists the same version with a February 19, 2025 release date. Check the version installed on your console rather than assuming it is current. Nintendo says save data remains available after downloading the update. If there is not enough space, free or expand system or microSD storage before updating.
The update notes list fixes for particular issues, including a soft-lock involving Battle Plugs and Challenge rewards and bugs that blocked progression. They do not establish that every crash is caused by one of those issues or that the update fixes every crash. See Nintendo’s Brothership update history and UK update page.

3. Check for corrupted data
For downloaded software, use the Switch’s data-management menu to run Nintendo’s check:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management → Manage Software.
- Select Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
- Choose Check for Corrupt Data and follow the on-screen instructions.
Nintendo includes this check in its error-closure troubleshooting and downloaded-software startup guidance.
Use the next step for your copy type
Downloaded copy
If a digital copy still will not start after the steps above, Nintendo lists deleting the software and downloading it again. If you use a microSD card, follow Nintendo’s microSD troubleshooting; its guidance also includes trying the download in the console’s system memory. Use Nintendo’s instructions for downloaded software that will not start rather than deleting save data.

Game card
A game-card reading problem is different from corruption in a downloaded copy. If the Switch cannot read the card or reports a card-related error, follow Nintendo’s separate Game Card Read Issues guidance; deleting and redownloading a digital title does not apply to that copy.
When to contact Nintendo Support
If the same error continues after the relevant steps, contact Nintendo Support. Provide the exact error message or code, Switch model, installed game version, whether you use a download or game card, and what you were doing when the failure happened. A specific error code may have its own support instructions, so include it when asking for help.
What Nintendo’s update history does—and does not—show
Nintendo’s game-specific update page documents particular bug fixes, but it does not report a Brothership crash rate or establish a widespread, general crash defect. The other troubleshooting steps above are general Switch support guidance, not a diagnosis that the game itself is responsible. Use the sequence to narrow down the issue rather than assuming one cause.
