When Microsoft Edge will not print a PDF, first determine whether the failure is limited to Edge, to one document or website, or to Windows printing generally. Test another document in Edge, then print from Word or another application. That simple split identifies whether to work in Edge’s print dialog, change layout settings, update a printer driver, or troubleshoot Windows, the print queue, and the printer connection.
What can cause an Edge printing problem?
Microsoft identifies five possible layers: the document or website, Microsoft Edge, the printer driver, Windows, and the printer’s connection or hardware. The symptom often indicates which layer deserves attention first.

Start with a controlled test
Do not change several settings at once. Run these tests in order so that a successful result tells you what to fix next.

Open another website or online document and choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows. On macOS, use Command+P. A simple page is a useful control for a complex PDF.
- Compare the result. If the second document prints, the original PDF or website is the likely problem. Complex graphics, embedded fonts, page code, or styles can break a print job even when the printer itself works.
- Test another application. Print a test document from Word or another Windows application. If that also fails, stop changing Edge settings and move to Windows, the driver, the queue, the connection, or the printer hardware.
- Record the scope. Note whether the failure is a preview error, an empty or clipped page, a job that remains queued, or a printer that is not offered. This prevents you from applying a driver fix to a document-layout problem, or a Windows fix to a single damaged PDF.
When only one PDF or website fails
Try the document again
Close the print dialog, reopen it, and print the same file once more. A transient rendering failure can disappear on a second attempt. If a PDF opened from a download is unreliable, reopen the file in Edge and wait for all pages to render before pressing Ctrl+P.

Use a plain webpage view when possible
For a webpage, open Immersive Reader if the site supports it, then print the simplified version. Immersive Reader is not available on every site, and it may remove interactive or decorative content, but it can bypass troublesome page code, fonts, and styling. Compare the simplified preview with the original before printing.
Separate content problems from printer problems
Print a different PDF and a basic webpage. If both alternatives work, the failed item—not Edge or the printer—is the leading explanation. Ask the document owner for a new PDF export or a simpler version rather than repeatedly reinstalling the printer.
When Edge itself fails to print
Verify the selected printer
Open Edge’s print dialog and confirm that the intended printer is selected. For a “Print preview failed” message, choose another installed printer if one is available, then reopen the dialog and select the original printer again. This refreshes the printer handoff without changing Windows-wide settings.

Retry after restarting the Edge session
Cancel the dialog, close every Edge window, start a new session, reopen the page or PDF, and try again. This is particularly useful when the built-in PDF viewer did not load correctly.
Recover from a missing PDF viewer
If Edge cannot show a preview because its built-in PDF viewer is missing, cancel the failed preview, press Ctrl+P, and retry. If the preview still does not appear, close Edge completely and repeat the new-session procedure above. The goal is to force Edge to reload the document and its PDF-printing component.
Use the native Windows dialog
Edge’s normal dialog is not the only route. Choose Print using system dialog for the native Windows printer interface. On Windows, the direct shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+P. On macOS, the equivalent shortcut is Option+Command+P. The system dialog can expose printer features or paper choices that Edge’s simplified dialog does not show.

Fix clipped pages, wrong size, and missing content
Choose the scaling that matches the job
In Edge’s print settings, select one of these options:

- Actual size: sends the document at its stated scale. Use it for forms, labels, diagrams, or measured drawings where changing dimensions would be a problem.
- Custom: enter a percentage when neither automatic fitting nor 100 percent produces the required result.
Check the preview after changing the scale. Paper size and orientation must also agree with the document; a letter-sized job sent to an A4 setup, for example, can create unexpected margins or clipping. Because printer capabilities differ, make a single test print before sending a large batch.
Control headers and footers
For webpages, headers and footers can add the current date and page number. Turn them on when that information is useful, or off when you need a clean copy and more room for the page itself. They affect webpage output; they do not repair a damaged PDF.

Check the preview before committing
Scroll through every page in preview, not just the first. Look for blank pages, cut-off columns, substituted fonts, or images that extend beyond the paper. A preview that is already wrong points to Edge rendering or print settings; a correct preview followed by a wrong paper output points toward the driver, paper settings, or the printer.
When other Windows applications also fail
If Word or another application cannot print either, Edge is no longer the primary suspect. Windows lists printer discovery, stuck jobs, spooler crashes, driver compatibility, and connection problems among the common causes.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and confirm that the printer is present. A printer that is missing or shown offline requires connection or Windows-level attention before Edge can use it.
- Use the Windows Get Help printer troubleshooter. It is designed to check common printer, queue, and configuration failures and is the appropriate next step when multiple applications are affected.
- Inspect the print queue for jobs that remain stuck. A blocked job can prevent later Edge jobs from reaching the printer; clear the blockage using the printer’s Windows management controls, then retry a small test page.
- If the Windows print spooler is crashing or repeatedly stopping, follow the Windows printer troubleshooting path rather than repeatedly reopening Edge. A spooler failure affects every application that submits print jobs.
- Check the physical or network connection. Confirm that the printer is powered on and reachable through its configured connection, then test again from a basic Windows document.
The exact Windows screens vary by Windows edition and device-management policy. If the printer is supplied through a company print server, involve the administrator before removing or re-adding it; server-side driver selection and permissions can control what your computer is allowed to print.

Update the printer driver when Edge is the only failing app
When Word and other applications print successfully but Edge does not, Microsoft recommends obtaining the latest driver released by the printer manufacturer. Drivers can affect Edge differently from other applications because the print path and rendered content are not identical.
- Identify the exact printer model and the Windows edition installed on the affected computer.
- Visit the printer manufacturer’s official support page and select the driver intended for that model and Windows edition. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking model.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver according to its instructions. If the installer offers to replace an existing driver, read the model and operating-system details before accepting.
- Restart Edge after installation, reopen the PDF or webpage, and print a one-page test. Recheck scaling and paper size because a new driver can expose additional printer capabilities.
If the driver update changes nothing, return to the scope test. A single damaged document still points to the content; a preview failure across every Edge document points to Edge or its PDF viewer; and failures in every application point to Windows, the queue, the driver, the connection, or hardware.
Managed printers and shared environments
On a work or school network, the computer may not control the entire print path. Ask the print-server administrator to verify three items:
- the driver selected on the server matches the printer model and is compatible with the client Windows edition;
- your account has permission to use the queue and its supported features; and
- Group Policy settings are not restricting printer installation, driver replacement, or access to the system print dialog.
These checks matter when a locally working printer behaves differently after it is connected through a shared queue. Capture the exact Edge symptom and whether another application can print; that information tells the administrator whether to investigate the server or the client.

What not to do
- Do not assume a PDF is corrupt because one complex file fails; test another PDF first.
- Do not replace a working driver when every application is failing; investigate Windows, the queue, and connectivity first.
- Do not send a large batch before checking the complete preview and making a test print.
- Do not remove a managed printer or change Group Policy settings without the administrator’s approval.
- Do not treat a successful print from Word as proof that Edge’s PDF path is healthy; the two applications can exercise different driver behavior.
