Start by identifying whether the problem is low or uneven frame rate, other players warping or moving late, a low-bandwidth warning, or a disconnection. Those symptoms can have different causes, and Microsoft’s available guidance does not establish one universal multiplayer-lag fix or a minimum internet speed.
Work through the reversible checks below: adjust online features to isolate streamed-data load, test without Community packages if the simulator is unstable or slow to load, and remove a specific unauthorized map-data mod only if you installed one. Avoid broad network tweaks that Microsoft’s guidance does not recommend.

First, identify what “lag” looks like
Before changing settings, note what is actually happening. This is a practical way to organize troubleshooting, not an official diagnostic test; the symptoms alone cannot prove whether the cause is your PC, connection, or an online service.

Reduce online data features as a test
Microsoft says Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 requires a constant internet connection to stream content and will not run offline. Its online settings let you manage bandwidth and monthly data use and control features such as multiplayer, live weather, live traffic, and photogrammetry. - Open General > Online in the simulator. Record your current settings so you can restore them.
- Temporarily turn off one or more bandwidth-consuming features, such as photogrammetry, live weather, or live traffic. If testing multiplayer, change its setting only as needed for the test.
- Fly again under comparable conditions and check whether the specific symptom changes.
- Turn features back on one at a time to see whether a particular setting correlates with the problem.
Menu labels or ordering may vary by version. Sim Update 6 says the ordering of online settings was made consistent across platforms, but this does not guarantee every screen remains unchanged in future updates.
What Rolling Cache can and cannot do
Rolling Cache stores recently visited areas locally so the simulator can avoid downloading the same data again, which Microsoft describes as a way to save bandwidth. It may help with repeat scenery downloads, but Microsoft does not promise that it fixes multiplayer latency, player movement delays, or disconnections.

Test the simulator without Community packages
If you have PC stability problems or unusually long loading times, temporarily move the contents of the Community folder somewhere else, then relaunch and test. This is an isolation step, not proof that an add-on caused multiplayer lag.
- Close the simulator.
- Move the Community packages to a temporary location outside the Community folder; do not delete them.
- Relaunch and check whether the stability or loading issue changes.
- If the test helps, restore packages in controlled batches to find whether a particular package is involved.
- Update or leave out packages that reproduce the problem.
Microsoft’s Sim Update 6 release notes warn that outdated Community packages may unexpectedly affect performance and behavior. They do not say that every multiplayer issue is caused by an add-on.

Remove the unauthorized map-data mod only if you installed one
If you previously installed an unauthorized streamed map-data mod originally released for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, it is worth checking this specific cause when you see low-bandwidth messages. In a forum post dated 27 November 2024, the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team said it had seen several cases where removing such a mod and restoring altered hosts-file entries resolved the message. The post does not give a case count or establish that this explains other players’ warnings.
Follow the Team’s instructions in “[Possible Solution] Low Bandwidth Messages” to remove the mod and restore defaults. Do not edit the hosts file based on unrelated troubleshooting advice. The Team states: “We do NOT recommend using any streamed map data mod that replaces the default maps.”

Check whether the simulator is up to date
As of 13 August 2026, the latest official PC release notes in the available version context are Sim Update 6, version 1.8.14.0. It includes performance changes and fixes as well as the warning about outdated Community packages. Check the Sim Update 6 release notes and use the current update channel for your installation.

Avoid fixes that are not supported by this guidance
The Microsoft sources cited here do not establish disabling IPv6 or Teredo, changing registry network-throttling values, changing DNS, using a VPN, or buying a faster router as standard fixes for MSFS 2024 multiplayer lag. They also provide no numeric bandwidth target. Avoid treating those changes as proven solutions; if symptoms suggest a separate local network fault, investigate that fault independently rather than assuming new equipment is required.
