The same hexadecimal code can be raised by an installed Word, Excel or PowerPoint app, by the Microsoft 365 installer, by Windows Update, or by an enterprise deployment system. Identify where the message appears, then use the matching repair path below. Start with reversible checks and Office’s built-in repair options; uninstalling, resetting Windows Update, or changing deployment settings comes later.
What Office error 0x80070057 means
Windows uses 0x80070057 for more than one condition. Microsoft associates it with corrupted files, permission problems and incorrect system configuration, particularly when an update cannot install. That description does not identify which file or setting is wrong on your computer.

The trigger is more useful than the code. An Office window that will not open needs an application repair sequence. A failure while downloading or installing Microsoft 365 needs the setup troubleshooter and possibly an offline installer. A message shown by Windows Update belongs to the Windows servicing path. A Configuration Manager device can have a version-specific Office deployment problem that requires an administrator.

When an installed app will not start
Note the app name and the exact action that produces the message. For example, launching Word from the Start menu is a different case from clicking “Update” in an Office deployment tool. If one app fails but the others work, still treat repair as a suite-level operation: repairing Microsoft 365 or Office repairs the installation rather than only the visible executable.

When setup or a download fails
Record whether the failure occurs before files begin downloading, during download, or while configuring the installation. Proxy authentication, firewall or antivirus inspection, insufficient permissions, incompatible 32-bit/64-bit selections and a damaged existing installation can produce different symptoms. Retry after each change so you know which branch solved the problem.
When Windows Update is the source
If the code is in Settings > Windows Update, Windows Update history, or an update-management console rather than in an Office dialog, do not begin by repeatedly repairing Word. Use the Windows Update procedure below.
When an organization manages Office
Do not force a consumer reinstall on a managed device. Microsoft documented a historical Microsoft 365 version 1910 incident in which updates delivered through System Center Configuration Manager generated 80070057. The affected builds were removed from the catalog; Microsoft identified build 12130.20410 or later and supplied a fix tool for affected devices. That case is version- and deployment-specific, so an administrator should compare the installed build, update channel and deployment method before applying its instructions.

Fix an installed Office app that will not open
1. Install any pending Office update
- Open an Office app that still starts, such as Excel or PowerPoint.
- Choose File > Account (in some perpetual editions this is Office Account).
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now. If Update Options is missing, your organization may control updates or the installation may use a different update channel.
- Restart Windows and test the affected app again.
An update can replace a damaged component and also matters when the error is tied to a particular build. If the app still fails, move to the diagnostic test rather than repeatedly selecting Update Now.
2. Use Safe Mode to test add-ins
Safe Mode starts the Office program without most add-ins and custom startup components. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent repair.

- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter one command, then press Enter:
winword /safefor Word, excel /safefor Excel, orpowerpnt /safefor PowerPoint. - Open a document or workbook and perform the action that previously failed.
If the program works in Safe Mode, an add-in or startup customization is a likely cause. If it fails in Safe Mode too, skip to Office repair.
3. Disable add-ins one at a time
- Start the affected app normally if possible.
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, select Go, and clear one add-in.
- Restart the app and repeat the failing action.
- Re-enable unaffected add-ins and leave the one that reproduces the error disabled until its vendor supplies a compatible version.
Also inspect other categories in the Manage list, such as Excel Add-ins or Word Add-ins, if the COM list is empty. Changing one item at a time preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail.

4. Run Quick Repair
- Close every Office program.
- In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows 10 builds).
- Find Microsoft 365 or your Office edition, select the three-dot menu, choose Modify, and approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Quick Repair, choose Repair, and wait for completion.
- Restart Windows and test the app.
Quick Repair is the faster option. Microsoft describes it as detecting and replacing corrupted files; it normally uses files already on the computer, so it is less dependent on a large download than Online Repair.
5. Escalate to Online Repair
Run Online Repair when Quick Repair did not resolve the error.
- Return to the same Modify screen for the Office installation.
- Select Online Repair, then Repair.
- Save open documents first. The process may remove and rebuild the Office installation and requires an internet connection.
- When it finishes, restart Windows, open the affected app and check File > Account for the installed version.
Online Repair is the comprehensive repair option. It repairs the suite even when only Word, Excel or PowerPoint appeared to be broken, so allow enough time for the complete operation and sign in again if Office requests activation.

6. Uninstall and reinstall only after repair fails
Use Microsoft’s Microsoft 365/Office uninstall troubleshooter rather than deleting random folders or registry entries. Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance places the setup troubleshooter first for Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016 on Windows 10 or later.
- Save documents, close Office and make sure you know which edition and account you need to reinstall.
- Run the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter and allow it to remove the selected Office installation.
- Restart when prompted; do not skip this restart because pending file operations can keep the old installation locked.
- Sign in to the account or portal that owns the license and select the correct Office edition and language.
- Install the same bitness as compatible add-ins and existing business software require. Do not switch between 32-bit and 64-bit merely as a guess.
- Open an Office app, activate it, install updates and test the original workflow.
Uninstalling removes the local Office programs but does not intentionally delete your normal documents. Still, back up important files and record custom templates, add-ins and macros before starting.
Fix 0x80070057 during Office installation or download
Run the setup troubleshooter first
Use Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter before attempting a manual cleanup. It is the first supported step for Microsoft 365 and Office 2021, 2019 and 2016 on Windows 10 or later. Restart after it completes, then retry the installation once.
Check permissions and the existing installation
- Run setup from an account that can install software, or ask the device administrator to approve it.
- Remove or repair a partially installed Office edition through Settings > Apps > Installed apps before launching a new installer.
- Confirm that the selected 32-bit or 64-bit package is compatible with required add-ins and with another Office edition already present.
- Close Office programs and restart Windows to release files held by a failed setup attempt.
Retry after each change. If setup now fails at a different stage, record that stage; it distinguishes a damaged installation from a network restriction.
Use the offline installer when web setup is blocked
If the web installer fails during download or configuration, use Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 offline installer for the licensed edition. Microsoft says the offline installer may bypass proxy, firewall, antivirus or internet-connection problems that can occur during Microsoft 365 installation. The package still needs a valid license and must match the edition, language and bitness you intend to deploy.

1. Restart and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not request it.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on current Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters on Windows 10.
- Run Windows Update, apply the recommended action, restart and select Check for updates.
When the code is attached to Windows Update, this procedure addresses the servicing layer that delivered the update instead of modifying Office files directly.
2. Reset the Windows Update cache
A damaged download cache can prevent a package from being verified. Microsoft identifies clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution cache as a troubleshooting step. Use an administrator account and stop the update services before changing the folder.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
net stop wuauservandnet stop bits. Wait for each service to report that it has stopped. - In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete its contents. Do not delete the parentSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run
net start wuauservandnet start bits. - Restart Windows and check for updates again.
If a file is in use, restart and repeat the supported troubleshooter instead of forcing deletion. On a managed device, ask the administrator before resetting the cache because deployment policy may recreate it.
3. Check system files with System File Checker
Microsoft recommends System File Checker for corruption or configuration problems associated with 0x80070057.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannowand leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows and retry the update or Office operation.
If SFC reports that it could not repair files, save the result and use Microsoft support or an administrator-led servicing repair. Do not substitute an unverified registry cleaner for system-file repair.
Enterprise deployment: the version-1910 exception
Microsoft documented a specific Microsoft 365 version 1910 incident in which updates delivered through System Center Configuration Manager failed with 80070057. Microsoft removed the affected builds from its catalog, identified build 12130.20410 or later and supplied a fix tool for affected devices.
This is not evidence that every Office installation with 0x80070057 has the same cause. An administrator should collect the Office build from File > Account, identify the update channel, check whether Configuration Manager delivered the package and compare those details with the affected deployment article. Applying a consumer repair or changing the registry on a managed computer can put it out of policy.
Choosing the least risky next step
| Remedy | What it tests or changes | Reversibility | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Mode | Loads the app without most add-ins | Fully reversible; close the app to exit | The app crashes or stops working at launch |
| Disable one add-in | Removes a suspected extension from the startup path | Reversible from Add-ins settings | Safe Mode works |
| Quick Repair | Replaces detected corrupted Office files | Low impact; documents remain in place | Safe Mode does not identify an add-in or the app still fails |
| Online Repair | Rebuilds the Office suite comprehensively | Higher impact; requires internet and may require activation again | Quick Repair did not solve the problem |
| Uninstall/reinstall | Removes the local installation and lays down a new one | Most disruptive; preserve templates, macros and add-in details first | Both repair modes fail |
| Offline installer | Uses a staged package instead of continuous web setup | Does not alter Windows Update | Proxy, firewall, antivirus inspection or unreliable internet interrupts web setup |
| Windows Update cache reset | Clears downloaded update data | Windows recreates the cache | Windows Update, not an Office dialog, reports the code |
What not to do
- Do not treat 0x80070057 as proof that every Office component is damaged; the source layer determines the fix.
- Do not apply a registry edit copied from an unrelated error page. The documented causes include corruption, permissions and configuration, not one universal registry value.
- Do not repeatedly run Online Repair while an organization controls updates; contact the administrator first.
- Do not delete Office folders manually before using the supported uninstall troubleshooter.
- Do not assume Safe Mode repaired the installation. It only shows that an add-in or startup component may be involved.
- Do not use a generic cleaner as a substitute for SFC, the Windows Update troubleshooter or Microsoft’s setup tools.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
When to stop troubleshooting
Escalate to Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator when the setup troubleshooter, the appropriate Office repair mode and the Windows Update steps have failed; when SFC cannot repair protected files; when activation or licensing details are unclear; or when Configuration Manager controls the device. Provide the exact code, the app or service that displayed it, the Office edition and build, the Windows version, the update channel and the step at which failure occurs. Those details are more useful than reporting only “Office error 0x80070057.”
